Exit West: A Novel | Mohsin Hamid

"We are all migrants through time." I think that sentence, of all that this book might say, is what will stick with me. The concept of doors to "who knows where" is quite interesting, as is the path of the main characters' relationship. While not a favorite book, I think this was worth the afternoon read.

Meh - I began to really want to know what would happen when the book ended. The racial questions were interesting, as were the ways people reacted to tragedies, but it felt unfinished.

4 stars - With our family's personal connection to Janesville, I found this book moving in so many ways. All the feels! The writing was very well-done.

Just as the first book did, this one kept me reading straight through until the end with as few stops as possible. The twists surprised me, and oh, the cliffhanger at the end will definitely get me to read the next book as soon as it is available. #themisfiles #sciencefiction

3.5 stars - I'm completely lost in her universe, yet Ms. Kenyon kept me entertained with this rollicking pirate-ish adventure story and I will read the rest of the trilogy as they are published. And oh man, how she likes to torment her characters.

So good! I love how the author imagined what would happen if so many died so quickly and how the rest would survive and remember. #afterthedisasterbooks

Finished the series on a high note! Well-written, imaginative, but a little heavy-handed in the "humans are ruining the earth" vein in the epilogue. Overall, the whole series was worth the time spent reading it; such a fantastic cast of characters and interesting turns of events.

Set in 1930's California around the jet-setting Hollywood crowd, Ms. Quick has just enough twists in the mystery to keep the reader guessing while not shorting the romance as well. (And I love the cover!)

An interesting and well-written look at a criminal from inside his head, this book is still not my personal preference. #classiccrimenovel

4 stars I enjoyed how the main characters had to learn what each really meant when they talked about love as well as the suspense. Ms. Leigh managed to pull the wool over my eyes as to the identity of the villain as well. Another series for pure enjoyment

3.5 stars Good for what it is - I might have enjoyed it more if I had read the books that came before it (I think I've only read one or two of the earlier ones in the series). Instead, I spent the first third of the book trying to get immersed in the world again, but it certainly picked up for me after that.

One of my very favorite series - every one feels like a visit from an old friend. I enjoy the way Eve interacts with the other cops, victims, witnesses, suspects, and ESPECIALLY Roarke.

For a middle grade fantasy, I enjoyed this story (chosen to please my 14 y.o. daughter who is currently obsessed with it). I found it an enjoyable palate cleanser after several darker adult reads lately, even though I predicted several of the "twists". #middlegradefantasy #readtodiscusswithelise

New-to-me author/series: so far I think this will be right in my wheelhouse

ETA: I was right - now I want to read them all! I enjoyed both the suspense and romance parts of this book and find the paranormal twist adds to the escapism.

By a new-to-me author whom I will certainly look forward to reading more, this story grabbed me right away and left me wanting more time with the characters while still having a satisfying ending. (Read for my real life book club, which is 3 for 4 so far in book choices!)

I got stuck my first time through this book with Jack's struggles to acclimate to the Outside. I finally powered through to the end and really appreciated the final scene of the book.

Little Life | Hanya Yanagihara
Pickpick

Heart breaking. Tragic. Yet difficult to put down, I'm not sure how I feel. No one person should have such a sad life. My only real difficulty with the book is how the narration jumps from person to person and the reader has to re-focus to decipher which character belongs with which pronoun. I don't regret the read but am pretty sure it is not one I will ever reread.
