Room: A Novel | Emma Donoghue
The story of a mother, her son, a locked room and the outside world. Jack is five and, like any little boy, excited at the prospect of presents and cake. He's looking forward to telling his friends it's his birthday, too. But although Jack is a normal child in many ways loving, funny, bright, full of energy and questions his upbringing is far from ordinary: Jack's entire life has been spent in a single room that measures just 12 feet by 12 feet; as far as he's concerned, Room is the entire world. He shares this world with his mother, with Plant, and tiny Mouse (though Ma isn't a fan and throws a book at Mouse when she sees him). There's TV too, of course and the cartoon characters he thinks of as his friends but Jack knows that nothing else he sees on the screen is real. Old Nick, on the other hand, is all too real, but only visits at night like a bat when Jack is meant to be asleep and hidden safely in Wardrobe. And only Old Nick has the code to Door, which is otherwise locked...Told in Jack's voice, Room is the story of a mother's love for her son, and of a young boy's innocence.Celebrating 40 years of outstanding international writing, this is one of the essential Picador novels reissued in a beautiful new series style.

Day 20:
Room by Emma Donoghue. The innocent narrator really gives an interesting perspective to this horrendous story.

This had been on my TBR list forever. After finally getting to it, I think it lost some of the hype. It was a good story. I found the “after” struggles really interesting. But the narration could get quite annoying at times. Good, but not a favorite.

So sad and painfully real...This is a story I will never forget! My heart broke for Jack. It is amazing how the author managed to get inside the mind of a 5 year old. I highly recommend it!

Very similar to the book, but so far I think I‘m preferring the book to the movie.

I liked how the book was told from the boy‘s perspective. The movie is more of a general view. Overall worth watching though! Nice acting!

Clwojick I LOVED THE BOOK - I agree with you about the movie. It didn‘t have that “innocent” perspective that was done so well in the book. 4mo
ShyBookOwl Interesting perspective! I didn't read the book but I saw the movie twice. What I loved about it was that I actually did feel like it was his POV and I thought that worked SO WELL. I really felt the innocence too. The movie broke my heart. At times, I just couldn't breathe. I decided I wouldn't be able to handle the book. 4mo

This book was incredible and I couldn‘t put it down. It‘s the story of a mother and her 5 year old son Jack who are trapped in an she‘s known as room .This is a very serious topic and I would have never seen it coming that it‘s told from Jacks POV. it‘s interesting to see the world through his eyes as all he‘s ever known is Room, and as he‘s very young many things took on personalities of their own. An amazing story that I highly recommend.

ImperfectCJ I enjoyed this one so much, despite the emotional gut-punch of the POV. The audiobook is fantastic, too. 7mo

Jack is completely unaware that the normalcy of his life is utterly abnormal. Having been born in Room, he has been shielded by his mother to the harsh reality to their existence and has no idea that there is a world beyond room. Listening to Jack try to make sense of the only world he‘s ever known while learning of the world outside is heart wrenching.

Told from Jack‘s POV, this one grabbed my attention.

Interesting, well written book from 5-year-Old Jack‘s perspective! I read this book as research and a potential comp for my next novel, but have been meaning to read this for ages. The book, like the movie, didn‘t disappoint, and I was glad to see the arc of each character through Jack‘s consistent POV. Definitely some tough subjects involved, but Donoghue treats them with care.

This book was so incredible. It is told from the perspective of a 5 year old boy who had no education, but I think this perspective truly adds to the story. It is a beautiful book about a terrible situation, but also the beauty of life and the world around us. Sometimes I forget how much I have in life that I take for granted. This book helps put our blessings in perspective. Sadly, things like this actually happen in our world. Such a good book.

⭐️4/5
Emma Donoghue tells the story of a woman who was kidnapped and her son who was born while she was captive. Told from the point of view of 5 year old Jack, this story on love and strength is horrifying for its relation to reality with heart warming and humorous moments.
Though it should be noted some people found Jack‘s perspective unrealistic and irritating.

A great choice to have this horrible ordeal narrated by the 5 year old son of the protagonist, which leaves just enough distance to not be completely overwhelmed by the premise of the book. The last bit was a bit petering out, as the story had obviously run it‘s course and finding an ending must have been a thankless task, but that didn‘t much retract from this tale of motherly strentgh!

Jack only knows Room. At five years old, he has never experienced anything in the outside world, but now Ma has finally reached her breaking point.

She‘s ready to get out of Room once and for all. But she needs Jack‘s help.

I really liked how this traumatic story was told from a child‘s perspective and we followed it through the experience in the room, escape, and life after.

Very engaging and thought-provoking!

It took me a few pages to get used to the idiosyncrasies of the narrative voice but once I did it unleashed a torrent of feels that I almost drowned in. Seeing through the eyes of 5 year old Jack, held captive his entire life with his mother in a single room, this story is an emotional suckerpunch of epic proportions. The relationship between the mother and her boy is so moving, so breathtakingly and delicately evoked, so powerful... cont. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi Cont. from above...that, as a mother myself, I sometimes found so upsetting/beautiful/profound that I was moved to tears. The need to protect your child from harm, mental, physical or emotional, is a drive the strength of which I find astounding. This story is a testament to a mother's love and, as heart breaking it is, it's also full of hope. 11mo

Just finished this! I thought it was very well-written. The topic of the book is very difficult to read about; however, Emma Donoghue did a phenomenal job of realistically portraying the entire story. The five-year-old narrator, Jack, makes the story unique and even more powerful. Even though, it is an emotional read, I would highly recommend it!

This is such a hard book for me to rate. I really loved and was annoyed by it at the same time. I love that it's told from the perspective of a five year old who has to make sense of very adult traumas that have happened to him and his mother, however 10 hours of that on audio was difficult. For anyone that has read the print was Jack a little easier to handle in written form? #1 #2019

kgriffith So interesting, I listened to this to review before it came out, and I felt like reading rather than listening might have been more annoying. I don‘t know if the text is written phonetically, or if Michal Friedman was given specific coaching about how to voice Jack or...? 13mo
