It started really funny but quickly fizzled for me. I thought how he separated the chapters into days (and where we were traveling with him) was clever but didn‘t really work out in the end

“Come on, say it again. I‘m a perfect devil. Tell me how bad I am. It makes me feel so good!” Oh Lestat!!! He kills me This book was so much slower than the first 2 (maybe 200-300 pages of back story, really?) but I still enjoyed it

KathyWheeler Yeah — that was a lot of backstory, but I still liked it. The only one I absolutely hated was Memnoch the Devil. 5y

RachLovesTV Yessss! I wrote this quote down when I was reading this. And also texted it to my BFFs. 6y
jillrhudy In the eighties it was thought maybe pretty and polite feminists could advance the agenda, because overbearing men created an “ugly feminist” stereotype. Now we just need some feminists. That‘s what happens when you let the patriarchy shape the movement. Roxane and Lindy are what we need and never stopped needing. 6y

Silence gives consent. Thank you Roxane for saying that rape jokes are not funny ever.

TrishB Never 6y
RachLovesTV So much yes. 6y
quietlycuriouskate Strictly speaking, it translates " the one who is silent is seen to consent" which puts a different complexion on the matter and is, I feel, closer to the truth. I have a problem with silence = consent: there are any number of reasons for/interpretations of silence, but they get swept under the carpet. Then comes the silence-shaming... (Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your post!) 6y
Teafiend I totally agree. In the context of this chapter, which is talking about a comedian making rape jokes, there was only one person in the crowd who spoke up. So in that sense, the crowds silence was consenting to other jokes and other terrible things. Thank you so much for your input. I should have been more specific. 6y

Bailedbailed

Only got a few pages in. The writing didn‘t flow for me, sort of threw me off. And there were several words I didn‘t recognize (on page 2!?!?) so I can‘t deal with that! It was like the author was trying to use every word in her dictionary! So maybe it wasn‘t the right time for me to read it or just not the right book for me. Oh well. Onto Margaret Atwood!
