Something Wicked This Way Comes
Something Wicked This Way Comes | Ray Bradbury
Few American novels written this century have endured in th heart and mind as has this one-Ray Bradbury's incomparable masterwork of the dark fantastic. A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes -- and the stuff of nightmare.

“Well-” The salesman walked about 3 feet, stopped and hunched his shoulders. Suddenly he seemed aware of house windows or the cold sky staring at his neck. He turned slowly, sniffing the air. Wind rattled the empty trees. Sunlight, breaking through a small rift in the clouds, minted a last few oak leaves all gold. But the sun vanished, the coins were spent, the air blew gray; the salesman shook himself from the #spell. #QuotsyOct19 #AllHallowsRead

So this was a #screamathon read, and it definitely had scary elements, but really it was just more poetic, beautiful Bradbury, and I loved it almost as much as Dandelion Wine.

‘Is Death important? No. Everything that happens before Death is what counts. And we've done fine tonight. Even Death can't spoil it.‘

I love Green Town. I love Will. And Will and Jim. And Charles Halloway. And every single thing about this story. 🖤

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DGRachel It's been ages since I've read this, but seeing this post makes me want to reread it. Maybe I'll put it on my list for next October. :) 1mo

The story was interesting but this wasn‘t quite what I was expecting. It definitely had a lot of philosophical musings throughout. The writing was quite lyrical and certain sentences were just so beautiful. I would have liked more of the actual plot and story however.

My first Halloween read is complete, and it was fantastic. It was creepy, fun, and autumnal. Ray Bradbury‘s writing took me a bit to get used to, but after that I was hooked. I do wish more of the story took place in the carnival though. I have a lot to ramble about when it comes to this book so if you want to check out my full review it‘s here https://readinginthewildwood.com/2019/10/03/something-wicked-this-way-comes-revi...

I've been wanting to read this book for a while and when i did get the chance, it did not disappoint. The title alone sounds so intriguing. I would personally describe this book as a freak show written by an author whose poetic prose will force you to introspect your own life. The only thing I regret is not reading this in October, because it is a perfect Halloween read.

sudi Apparently Disney made a movie adaptation of this book😱. I had no idea Disney made movies like this, it was made in the 80's i think, i definitely have to watch it. 6mo

This may not be the best book to listen to while mowing grass in 80 degree weather but it‘s definitely a good listen. It took awhile for me to connect with the story but I‘m pretty engaged now. All in all, it makes me crave fall. Or I just don‘t want to mow grass for another four months.

When I was a teen, I don't think this book would have appealed to me. Even now, I struggled with the first of it, not able to connect to the two boys as characters. But then Charles Halloway entered the picture. Not sure how I feel about Bradbury calling a 54 year-old “old" about 100 times, but Charles is the best. When he entered the story, the entire thing fell into place for me. I could appreciate the creepiness & fears & atmosphere more.

Ericalambbrown I need to read this. When I was 10, Disney (of all companies?) made this into a movie. I believe Mr. Bradbury was the screenwriter. I loved it. It introduced me to Jason Robards, Diane Ladd, Jonathan Pryce . . . . . I can‘t believe I never went back to read the source. I must do that. 🤓 8mo

⭐️⭐️ Let‘s be honest, Jim Nightshade‘s name was my favorite part. I had a hard time visualizing the story which sometimes happens to me with fantasy elements. Cooger and Dark‘s Pandemonium Shadow Show was supposed to be dark and sinister, but felt unrealistic and cheesy. It wasn‘t scary nor emotionally evocative. The audio was well done, but maybe I would‘ve been better off reading it in print? We‘ll never know because I‘m not reading it again.

Booksnchill Well I 5⭐️ it in print so I cannot speak to the audio but I did grow up in the 60s🤪sorry you didn‘t like it but Bradbury‘s Greentown books are very much his memories of his childhood I have heard - I‘m going to read others. 13mo
britt_brooke @Booksnchill I‘m definitely in the minority. 😆 Most reviews are good. I just couldn‘t picture it at all, so it never grabbed me. 13mo

This was so beautifully written. Bradbury has the soul of a poet! I loved how this story centers around the friendship of two young boys, but also deals with the relationship between father and son, and anyone facing their own mortality. I really enjoyed this book it was the perfect amount of spooky and suspense. What's better than a mysterious carnival with dark tents and creepy music playing pulling into a small town on the edge of nowhere a few days before Halloween to put shivers up and down your spine. The villains in this story are delightfully wicked and the heroes of the story are surprisingly refreshing. I highly recommend this book. Ray Bradbury has done it again!
