French Exit
French Exit: A Novel | Patrick DeWitt
From bestselling author Patrick deWitt, a brilliant and darkly comic novel about a wealthy widow and her adult son who flee New York for Paris in the wake of scandal and financial disintegration Frances Price tart widow, possessive mother, and Upper East Side force of nature is in dire straits, beset by scandal and impending bankruptcy. Her adult son Malcolm is no help, mired in a permanent state of arrested development. And then theres the Prices aging cat, Small Frank, who Frances believes houses the spirit of her late husband, an infamously immoral litigator and world-class cad whose gruesome tabloid death rendered Frances and Malcolm social outcasts. Putting penury and pariahdom behind them, the family decides to cut their losses and head for the exit. One ocean voyage later, the curious trio land in their beloved Paris, the City of Light serving as a backdrop not for love or romance, but self destruction and economical ruin to riotous effect. A number of singular characters serve to round out the cast: a bashful private investigator, an aimless psychic proposing a seance, a doctor who makes house calls with his wine merchant in tow, and the inimitable Mme. Reynard, aggressive houseguest and dementedly friendly American expat. Brimming with pathos and wit, French Exit is a one-of-a-kind 'tragedy of manners,' a riotous send-up of high society, as well as a moving mother/son caper which only Patrick deWitt could conceive and execute

Lighter and airier than some other DeWitt novels, this is a comedy of manners centered around an Upper East Side widow and her emotionally stunted son. Think Wodehouse, if Aunt Agatha were a bit younger, meaner, and a lot more sexually active, and if Bertie had lost his joie de vivre. The plot is mostly an excuse to bring together a cast of oddball characters and let them interact, which is fine by me, since DeWitt writes some of the funniest 👇

French Exit‘s Fitzgerald-esque approach, with it‘s modern setting, threw me off at first. But DeWitt soon had me captivated with the failing days of the rich and (in)famous; a mother/son toppling from their New York 1% heights to eventual ruin in Paris. DeWitt makes these not so likable characters likable without really compromising their repulsive natures. And while they wouldn‘t care a fig for me, oddly enough, i cared for them in the end.

This was a case of right book at the right time. Sometimes reading about unlikeable or very flawed characters who don‘t “give a toss” about what anyone else thinks is refreshing. After setting up Frances and Malcolm as a self absorbed and spoilt mother and son, deWitt does go on to reveal their humanity and painful background so there is depth to this book - but I was glad for that dose of devil may care attitude 🙌

Centique Also, I would like a follow up book about Madeleine! 2y

6-19-21: My 66th finished book of 2021! Very interesting little novel. Widow, Frances Price and her adult son, Malcolm are facing bankruptcy. They decide to sell their assets and move to Paris to live out their days with their cat Small Frank. They become hosts to a cast of quirky and funny characters including a PI and a medium. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣6️⃣6️⃣

⭐️Delighted to discover that this is a movie! Alas, not by Wes Anderson.⭐️ Absurd, hilarious story of a financially ruined woman and her grown son (and their cat--or is he?) fleeing their troubles to stay in a friend's ramshackle Paris apartment. Frances has a plan. Her plan is not great, and I may have preferred a different execution of her plan, but I loved the journey. I also wish we had gotten a little more closure on Small Frank.

MySharonaK Yes it so should have been by Wes Anderson ! 3y

Not sure how to categorize this novel besides calling it absurd. In fact, 32-year-old Malcolm appears so indifferent that he reminds me of Meursault from Camus‘ The Stranger only with a mama‘s boy touch. His 65-year-old mother Frances is like a fading actress performing her swan song as they lose all of their money and have to move to Paris. I laughed out loud at the dark comedy that reminds me of old school plays like Wilde et al. What a riot!

Aims42 This was definitely a under the radar read, it was so good! Not everyone‘s cup of tea, but I loved it ❤️ 3y
Palimpsest @Aims42 I really enjoyed it! I often make the mistake of reading Goodreads reviews and just get tired of seeing books or authors labeled as pretentious. Some people are capable of not only writing and executing ideas well, but speaking them. I‘m planning to watch the movie, (I love films, too) but I‘m not sure it will translate as well as print. I could see this as a play. I found this book unique, but yes not everyone‘s cup of tea as you said. 3y

Palimpsest @Aims42 I finally saw this film last weekend and I thought it was great. Of course some book content was left out and some things changed, but it worked. If you mix Dottie Parker with Wes Anderson , you might get something like this.Witty & dark, mother Frances & her grown son Malcolm are used to living in high style , yet now the family fortune is all but gone.A family friend has an apartment in Paris , why not take the cash they can round up, their curious cat Small Frank, & head there? No , I wouldn‘t want to be a member of this dysfunctional family but yet , I fell under their spell.

This is a quirky little book with a small cast of eccentric characters that is hard to classify. Mostly witty, but with flickers of sadness buried beneath the humor. It feels old school and theatrical - like a slightly vulgar Noel Coward play, complete with wealthy people, complicated relationships, and a seance. Good audiobook.

Dewitt's self-described tragedy of manners involves numerous eccentric characters, from medium Madeleine to private investigator Julius, but it is Malcolm Price & his mother Frances that are really the focus of this novel. The story follows mid-sixties widow Frances & Malcolm in his early thirties, as they prepare to move to France (hence the title) after lavishly spending all of the remaining money from the estate of Frances' late husband👇

vivastory (cont)& Malcolm's absent father (whose spirit may or may not be currently residing in their cat, Small Frank). Will the move to Paris be a new lease on life, or can they escape the mistakes they've been perpetuating for years? As flawed as Frances & Malcolm are, they are colorful characters, esp. Frances. I was reminded of a Wes Anderson movie in the very best way. This is the third deWitt I have read & have loved all three, but French Exit(cont) 4y
vivastory (cont.)is my favorite.. His droll humor is perfectly balanced by moments of emotional levity, lending character depth & gravitas.

Palimpsest This is on my to read list. Glad to see it got a pick from you. 4y
vivastory @Palimpsest I love deWitt's humor & I thought the characters in this one were charming 4y
KVanRead Oh man by TBR is reaching ridiculous heights but I have to stack this now. I loved his humor in The Sisters Brothers (which the French director of the crushingly disappointing movie totally missed - I so wanted it to be a Wes Anderson or Coen Brothers treatment 😒) and so if this is your favorite I‘ve got to stack it 📚 (edited) 4y
vivastory @KVanRead I kept thinking while reading this that I really would like for it to be a movie, then I remembered how disappointing I'd heard Sisters Brothers adaptation is. I didn't even bother watching it. But you're right, I think it'd need to be Wes Anderson or Coen Brothers for it to work 4y
KVanRead Yup don‘t bother with that movie if you liked the book. Super disappointing especially since it had such an amazing cast. Gets weirdly good ratings online - must be from people who didn‘t read the book. 4y
vivastory @KVanRead The book def holds a special place in my heart since it was my first experience with deWitt. I'm sure that's why it gets good ratings,I def won't be bothering with it 4y

merelybookish Great review! I still haven't read him but the Wes Anderson comparison is pretty convincing. And I think there is a movie version of this coming out with Michelle Pffiefer. Saw something about it recently. 4y
vivastory @merelybookish I was unaware of that. @kvanread & I were discussing how we are pretty skeptical of adaptations of deWitt's books bc apparently Sisters Brothers was pretty terrible. I am a bit more optimistic for French Exit though, as deWitt himself wrote the screenplay, so I think more of his intentions will come across. 4y

This was a twisted delight! Love DeWitt's brand of subtle but oh so dark humour in this "tragedy of manners. He can write characters so dislikeable & weird with a mastery that is a joy to behold. The acid tongued and horribly overbearing mother, Frances, is such an example - her behaviour & attitude are so awful yet this makes her fleeting moments of vulnerability & humanity all the more poignant. Trigger information in comments.

A lovely morsel of a book! Even the story has moments of tragedy, it made me laugh. The characters are pretentious, self-involved, and completely unconcerned about lives other than their own, which is the source of much of the humour in the book. #WanderingJune Buried in my kindle is this tagged book which I haven‘t read yet, but the premise struck me as a fit for today‘s prompt. Having become an Upper East Side social leper, Frances Price, her adult son and their aging cat slink out of NYC with plans to reinvent themselves and get #LostInFrance 🗼🗺 I‘m told this book has dark humor and major snark. I purchased as a #KindleDailyDeal so I‘m sure it‘ll be worth my$1.99 😛

CarolynM I agree about the dark humour and major snark. I enjoyed it🙂 5y
LeahBergen It‘s still sitting on my shelves, too. 😬 5y
Cinfhen Maybe we can buddy read @LeahBergen ??? That would be fun 5y

Cinfhen Glad to hear @CarolynM ❣️😁 5y
LeahBergen We should! Although I don‘t know when I‘ll be able to slot it in for the next couple of months. 😆 I may just start it if I see you pick it up. 5y
BarbaraBB Your kindle tbr looks great! 5y
Ruthiella I agree with Carolyn. It was a quirky and amusing read. 😀 Also White Tears was AMAZING. You will probably want to talk to someone when you finish it...like to say “did I just read what I think I read?” (edited) 5y
Cinfhen I have about 5 dozen unread titles on my Kindle @BarbaraBB and most of them do look really good!!! I‘ve been meaning to read White Tears ever since @shawnmooney reviewed it @Ruthiella more than a year ago! (edited) 5y
Cinfhen I was thinking maybe beginning of July @LeahBergen but no pressure!! I‘ll tag you when I decide to pick it up 😘 5y
TrishB I have quite a few of these too unread on my kindle! Can‘t resist the daily deal 😁 5y
Crazeedi I too have so many unread interesting books on my kindle! Grrr! What to do what to do??? 🙄 5y
marleed I recently read this. I think I would have liked it had I been in the right mood for that snarky sense of humor. But the cat‘s name, I really love the cat! 5y
Cinfhen I‘ll wait for the right mood @marleed and I love having so many titles on my Kindle- it‘s like a little portable library @Crazeedi @TrishB 5y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen truth!!❤❤ 5y

In her hand was a drink that tasted, she said, like suntan lotion over ice.

wanderinglynn That sound disgusting. 🤢 5y
Lindy @wanderinglynn But she drank it anyway. 5y

Pickpick

I was much entertained as I performed outdoor spring cleaning by the dry humor of this DeWitt novel. Light and pleasantly laugh out loud funny without being (imho) idiotic. A definite recommend for those moments where you need a lift in mood.

It was difficult to warm to Frances, the central character in this story - #ShesSoCold

gradcat This book sounds very interesting...is it a dark comedy or a humorous tragedy? 🤔 5y
CarolynM @gradcat That might depend on your point of view. I saw it as a dark comedy, the writing is very sharp. 5y
gradcat Thanks for answering! 🥰 5y
