Everything is fairly terrible right now, but this book is AMAZING.

My loan came through much sooner than expected—looks my weekend booked 🤣📚
This was my first vampire novel (except for Dracula itself, in college) and I was most pleasantly surprised. The fantasy elements work well with the science and both encourage the willing suspension of disbelief—which was an experience I very much needed right now. Yes, Matthew carrying Diana all the time (hah) does get a little annoying, but it seems to be contributing to the characters‘ growth. Hope I don‘t have to wait long for the next one. 📚
It‘s here! Visit my FB, IG, or Twitter accounts to see why there‘s confetti in the box 😂
Like, follow, share, reTweet if you do, thank you soooo much 📚💚📚💚)
And visit the publisher (here: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/kim-horner-mccoy/) or your favorite bookseller (Indibound, Amazon, B&N) to get your copy. 😍😍😍
End of promo 🙏 📚🙏📚🙏📚🙏📚🙏📚
It is, according to the hashtags, #BookLoversDay (I know, for us, that‘s all the days 😍) and so it seems fitting that yesterday I found this book—that I had somehow never heard of—while browsing in an actual, physical bookstore. And it is, so far, absolutely marvelous. Happy Book Lovers‘ Day to us! 📚💙
Our public library has re-re-opened (skylight trouble after lockdown) so I‘m embarking on a Project 😍

So insomnia really, really sucks, but Molly Peacock is great company 💖 I‘m at page 141 and I‘m definitely engaged by both the tribulations of the British woman who invented this type of paper art and by the way Peacock weaves in her own trials. 💖📚💖📚💖📚
It seems to be working 🤞💖📚💖📚💖📚💖📚
I‘ve been suffering the worst #BookSlump—my first ever. Can‘t focus, can‘t finish, can‘t force it. Maybe a side effect of waiting for my own to be published, maybe a weird aftereffect of the pandemic. Anyway, hoping this book will break it. 💜📚💜📚💜📚💜
Next up: This chunkster. Including index and notes, 1107 pages. But how else are we going to understand what happened?
📚💙📚❤️📚💙📚❤️📚💙📚❤️📚💙📚❤️📚
There was only research today . . . So it‘s breakfast for dinner 😇

For a buck ninety-nine, I didn‘t think I could go wrong with this as a companion on an up-coming bus trip. Anyone read this series?

I‘m giving myself a crash course in paleontology/anthropology (which might seem weird for a poet but so it goes). I finished Fossil Men and am now not quite a quarter through Atlas, which is a bit light on science so far and a bit heavy on trekking memoir. So, if anyone has any recommendations on recent paleo/anthropology books that are solid on science but accessible to the layperson, I would love to hear about them. Thanks! 📚🙏📚🙏📚🙏📚🙏📚🙏
Hello lovely readers! Have you been meaning to order a book of #poems? Please consider this a gentle reminder, a nudge, even, to reserve your copy of THIS BONY CABINET from Finishing Line Press. Right now. Today, even. Because presales close 📣 this Friday, May 28 📣 and all sales made during this period determine the book's press run.
Here's the link. You know what to do 😍 https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/kim-horner-mccoy/
This is a terrific, enlightening, frustrating read—just like the paleontology it illuminates. I went into it hoping for a simple answer about human origins. Alas, such simplicity is not to be had because science is the opposite of simple and every new fossil discovered could be the one that changes—sometimes drastically—what we know. Make time to read Fossil Men (and yes, Pattison addresses that title). 📚🤎📚🤎📚🤎📚🤎📚🤎📚🤎📚🤎
My first visit to my local coffee shop in one year, two months and so many days! I am beside myself with excitement!

There‘s something terrifically satisfying about the dimensions of Jorie Graham‘s new book of poems. Reminds me of holding the picture books I read to my daughters when they were little. . . The poems are terrific, too, of course 😍

This fantasy novel about the potential in life and why suicide is not the answer is sweet and sincere without being cloying or preachy. And as I‘ve said, Carey Mulligan‘s narration is perfect. The story elements are not necessarily super original, but the depiction of depression rings very true. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Subtitle: The Search for What it Means to be Alive. A great “pop” science introduction to a very complicated subject. Be patient in the middle when Zimmer develops context through mini-biographies. Understand that this is a narrative of the search for an answer, not an actual answer. Contains a very fine bibliography to scientific papers and books. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 and a half 🌟s.
Still very much enjoying this, but be aware if you‘re thinking of reading it (or, in my case, listening to the glorious Carey Mulligan read it to you) that it will tug at your regrets and poke its nose into any emotionally fragile mends your psyche might possess 📚💙📚
I‘ve tried to get started with sourdough before, but the voice of this cookbook finally got through to me. The recipes are precise (the chocolate cake recipe specifies the size for round vs square pan) and the sourdough advice is both scientific AND low pressure. Reading this makes you feel both well educated and reassured. All the 🌟s!
“These books are portals to all the lives you could be living.”
I‘m digging this on audio—Carey Mulligan is perfect

Exciting news: My first chapbook of #poems comes out this summer from the independent Finishing Line Press! It‘s in presales so it doesn‘t have an ISBN yet, but you can reserve your copy today. Go to https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/kim-horner-mccoy/ to order your copy of This Bony Cabinet, poems Albert Goldbarth calls both “sly” and “gorgeously orchestrated.” You can follow me in the usual social media places or visit my website at ⬇️
A little bit Rebecca, a little bit Jane Eyre, a little bit Mysteries of Udolpho (or insert your fave classic Gothic) enlivened with a natural, effective use of tarot. This may be a novel that benefits from the excellent narration, but I‘m still giving it🌟🌟🌟🌟
Kindle edition is on sale today! 📚💜📚💙📚❤️📚💛📚💚📚🧡📚💜📚💛📚💚📚💙📚❤️📚🧡
I am reminded of an ice storm in my childhood in Missouri, sometime in the 1970s. The power was out but we had a wood stove and I read Smith‘s book by the snowlight coming in the patio door. Yes, there must have been cold pouring off the glass, but I only remember Pongo and Missis and Perdita in the snow. #winter

This is delightful! The best nonfiction listen I‘ve enjoyed in a long time. The writing is both informative and entertaining. If you‘re a hard core science person, there won‘t be anything new here for you, but for the general reader it‘s a treat. Caveat—if you have a serious fear of flying, this might not be for you as it‘s structured as a trans-Atlantic flight. All the ⭐️⭐️⭐️s.
If you‘ve always known you should read this classic but never had the will, here is the way. Headley‘s translation is brilliant—funny, wise, colloquial in the most inspired way, inspiring to anyone who cares about language. All the ⭐️s.
