Shadow of Night
Shadow of Night: A Novel | Deborah Harkness
The #1 New York Timesbestselling sequel to A Discovery of Witchesas enchanting, engrossing, and impossible to put down as its predecessor (Miami Herald)J. K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Riceonly a few writers capture the imagination the way that Deborah Harkness has with her New York Timesbestselling All Souls trilogy. A Discovery of Witches introduces reluctant witch Diana Bishop, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.Picking up from A Discovery of Witches cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthews old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthews past tightens around them, and they embark on a very differentand vastly more dangerousjourney. The Book of Life, the much-anticipated conclusion to the All Souls trilogy, will be published by Viking in July 2014.

For me this is a typical case of book two in a trilogy syndrome. Pure filler, a lack of direction and an abundance of waffling.

There were parts in this that felt of value to the overall plot but on the whole this was a slog and all thats happening is your watching the author flex her historical knowledge in a drab fashion. This could have been magical, a previous century brought to life but it fell flat, sigh.

I liked the first in the series more, this one was definitely way more historical. I enjoyed all the literature references too, and having Kit Marlowe be a demon 😂

This follow up seemed to be losing touch with the story by throwing dozens of characters in, and having the main couple repeat the same relationship problems again and again. I hope the last book wraps everything up!

@TheAromaofBooks this was my book spin pick for December!

I decided to do some painting last night. Not my best work. Went with something whimsical which is not typically my thing. I usually do pop culture of some sort, so I'm used to more precision. It was hard for me to let go and just do something different. On the plus side, I did finish Shadow of Night! 👍

The history and time spent in Elizabethan England was quite fun. But Diana and Matthew seem to have lost ALL sense of urgency when they time walked to the past! I loved when a very unexpected character appeared and basically asked WTH they were doing dallying around so long 🤣. Although I have some books lined up for #NFNovembwr, I will be picking up The Book of Life next so I can finish the trilogy.

🌙I‘m continuing our #AllSouls group read-along with Book 2: #ShadowofNight 🖤

The real-time read for this one has too many gaps, so I created a schedule that breaks down the book over the course of 8 weeks, at a leisurely pace (accounting for the upcoming holiday season). This is a no-pressure group reading. Tagging the folks who participated in the #DOWRTR in case you‘d like to join!

Lizpixie Just reread this & realised I didn‘t put a review in there! The 2nd in the #AllSouls trilogy, it started as my least favourite(not much for medieval fiction)but turned out to be my favourite. I just couldn‘t deal with this series any more. The romance is so toxic and stupid that it made it impossible to read. And since this one takes place in Elizabethan England, it gave Matthew the excuse to be even more sexist, possessive, and controlling towards Diana. I‘m not a fan of promoting unhealthy relationships. This series is just dark academia Twilight. And that‘s not a compliment.

#Challenge2021

So...this FINALLY happened! I‘ve only been slogging through this since July 15/2020🤯😳🥺

I guess the best I can say is that, for me it was better than ‘A Discovery of Witches‘ but I really still don‘t understand all the great buzz about trilogy.

I‘ll read ‘The Book of Life‘ if for no other reason than because I have the ‘All Souls‘ trilogy. (Thank you🙄 BookBub for preying on my inability to say NO to a $1.99 deal😬😂)

CoverToCoverGirl This trilogy doesn‘t appeal to me—-I‘m not a fan of the whole magic thing— I‘ve yet to even read the Harry Potter series. Great progress... 👏🏻🙂 10mo

Avanders I agree — I couldn‘t finish the first book (very rare for me), even though I actually do love witches and vampires and fantasy 🤔 I just felt it was.. too cliched and tired. DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl It sounded really good & a bit different from my reg genre. HP is not even on my TBR, not interested tbh😂🤯 @Avanders I am still curious about the tv series. I think this is one trilogy (so far anyways) that 📺 has got to be better than the book😂🤞🏻 10mo

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick You're a better person than I. I just did NOT enjoy book 1. I don't even know that I want to try the show. 10mo
DieAReader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Only out of stubbornness lol! I think the show will do good for the same reasons it dragged (for me). The details and descriptions will be seen👀 and so less weighty. Might make the storyline seem quicker🧐🤷🏻‍♀️ It won‘t change my continued dislike for the 2 MCs (I prefer many of the secondary ones much more) though😂 10mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yes! Both MCs were rather boring. I enjoyed Hamish (that's the Scots name, right?) 10mo

I am really enjoying this trilogy. I love all the history and details. It makes me appreciate being a woman in this century though. The freedoms we have compared to then for example. It also really makes you feel human mortality. I have gasped out loud, laughed and cried while reading this. That alone is a sign of a truly engaging story. It is a grand adventure and I can't wait to see how it ends.

DogMomIrene I read the first book when it came out and didn‘t follow up with the series. I need to revisit this world because I do remember living that first book, and I‘m not a fan of vampires so that‘s saying something😂 10mo
bookishbitch @DogMomIrene I thought this book was even better than the first. And for me the relationship with Diana and Matthew isn't even the best part. I think all the other stuff is. 10mo
DogMomIrene @bookishbitch That‘s really good to hear. I loved the house in the first book. If I remember correctly, Diana had aunts who were pretty interesting too, maybe sisters? Some female relatives that I liked, but I thought the house as a character was fascinating🖖🏼🧐🤣 10mo

DieAReader So far, as I‘m still currently reading this (80% ish done), I would have to agree with you. It may be my mood lately, but I didn‘t enjoy this reread as much as I did in 2015. I gave it 5 stars then. Today I might give it 3.5. Diana and Matthew both irritate me and I don‘t care for the audiobook narrator. There are some fun elements to the time travel, but it‘s the secondary characters that make the book worth reading. Gallowglass is the one I was most looking forward to seeing again, and I will miss Jack very much.

Palimpsest I loved this one more than the first one, but i did feel that their relationship was too dependent and wrapped up in each other where it seems unhealthy. I never read the third book after I accidentally returned my copy to a library when I moved and didn‘t realize it, then tried to read an actual library copy and just couldn‘t get into it. I‘m loving the tv series. I was thinking of trying The Book of Life again. Third time is a charm, right? 12mo

Milara I started reading this thrilogy because I liked the tv show. I finished the first one and almost finished the second one, but i found myself not being able to continue reading. Everything is so exaggerated: the love, the passion, her magical powers etc. Even a teenager would get sick to the stomach. Same with Diana Gabaldon's Outlander, only i couldn't read beyong a few pages, it was so badly written. Sometimes the books is not better... 😩 1y
