The Death of Mrs. Westaway
The Death of Mrs. Westaway | Ruth Ware
The highly anticipated fourth novel from Ruth Ware, The Globe and Mail and New York Times bestselling author of the In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game. Harriet Westawaybetter known as Halmakes ends meet as a tarot reader, but she doesnt believe in the power of her trade. On a day that begins like any other, she receives a mysterious and unexpected letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong personbut she also knows that she can use her cold-reading skills to potentially claim the money. Hal attends the funeral of the deceased and meets the family...but it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and that the inheritance is at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Wares signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

An atmospheric family mystery, good twists and turns and well written characters. I enjoyed this but not my favourite of her books

🎧 Hal is a great character suffering from poor writing?

Hal‘s mother was hit by a car & died. She was penniless so she had to take up her mom‘s fortune-telling/tarot card reading store front.

She is notified of an inheritance she knows isn‘t hers. Loan sharks want money she‘s borrowed. She plans to use her fortune telling skills as Madam Margarita to get the inheritance money & run.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4 👇🏻

Twainy She finds out she wants to be part of a family. No spoilers beyond this so you‘ll have to read it to find out what happens & who dies.

The book relies on conversations not shared & Hal‘s internal monologue which of course are unreliable & unknown. Hal is very naive & a bit too dense for her background in fortune telling. I know I sound negative, just wanted to share what reduced the stars. It was a quick, easy, fun read.

Book with mixed reviewed but I enjoyed it. Hal Westaway received a letter indicating that she needs to go to Trepassen, she is one of the beneficiaries mentioned in her grandmother‘s will. She knows she is not related to this family but her precarious financial situation and debts threats made her to go as an impostor? Is she related to this family? Will she be safe in that house? A slow pace reading at the beginning but then it has twists. 3.8⭐️

Another Ware that I thoroughly enjoyed. I must admit that I guessed the ending at pretty much the earliest it could be guessed. I considered other options as red herrings appeared but I felt pretty sure about my guess. I believe it's easier to guess the twists when it's a physical book vs audio. Still super enjoyed watching how it unfolded though!

I've been devouring this book. Not sure why it took me I think 2years to get to it lol.
I've even chosen to sit outside on break in hopes of finishing it. I think today feels just lovely...though not sure I'll feel that way later during my 2 hr run lol!

The cards (tarot) do not predict the future.

This little passage about reading is the closest I've come to agreeing with a work of fiction about the tarot.

Mystery. Thriller. Intrigue. Death. Family. Secrets. Mistakes. On a day like any other Hal receives a letter, telling her about her inheritance, only problem - the letter was given to the wrong person. Hal needs money so she finds herself on the way to a funeral and caught in the web of a family she desperately needs to blend into, if she is going to pull off the greatest lie of her life. Highly recommend!!

In this gothic thriller, Hal is a lonely, broke orphan who makes her living by reading tarot cards. She is being harassed by a loan shark who she borrowed $500 from that has turned into a $3000 debt. Then she receives a letter stating that she‘s entitled to a huge inheritance from a dead grandmother. She believes the letter is in error but, she really needs the money, so she heads to Penzance fully intending to fake it so she can get the money.

what we thought was a regular day for Hal wasn‘t, it gets irregular very quickly when she receives a letter regarding the death of a relative she realizes it‘s sent to the wrong address and try‘s to forget about it. But then she uses her tarot cards to try and receive money like the letter said. She goes to a funeral and suspects suspicious behaviour. if you like suspense and mystery this is for you! The POV is hals and her emotions throughout.

Bailedbailed

100 pages in and I'm bailing. I LOVED A Woman in Cabin 10, had mixed feelings about In a Dark Dark Wood, making this my first Ware bail. I truly hate bailing on books, but with over 125 books on my TBR at home plus my 700+ books in my Goodreads-Want to Read, I don't want to waste time on books I'm struggling to enjoy. This was just so slow going, I wasn't impressed. Amazing writing, the story just wasn't there for me. 😕

Book Spin Pick: The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware. This is my third Ware novel, she has proven to be a guilty pleasure of mine. Her novels seem to all be the same and rather predictable. Yet, they are quick and fun with great writing style. Hope to enjoy this one!

Dan_1988 I really enjoy Ruth Ware. This one and The woman in cabin ten are my favourites :) 9mo

3/5 stars. This was a okay book. I felt myself really liking it at times, I liked the mood of the book and characters. But there was many times I wished it would just get it over with! The book just kept repeating itself over and over again. There was massive chunks that could have been taken out all together. The mystery dragged out soooo long. And the climax wasn't the best. It was interesting, but I felt it could have been better.

I‘m finding that Ruth Ware is very hit and miss for me. I wanted to really like this book. It just seemed repetitive and somewhat predictable. I‘m glad I read it but it‘s not on the top of my recommendation list. Good not great. 3.5⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ between a pick and so-so.

A little bit Rebecca, a little bit Jane Eyre, a little bit Mysteries of Udolpho (or insert your fave classic Gothic) enlivened with a natural, effective use of tarot. This may be a novel that benefits from the excellent narration, but I‘m still giving it🌟🌟🌟🌟

I‘m mixed on this book! Good things: great characters, setting, mood. Meh things: it was repetitive and needed an aggressive edit. Characters kept restating the same things which got frustrating. It was an enjoyable book just for the vibe, but it wouldn‘t be the Ruth Ware I suggest to people.

Let's gloss over how 8:48 is nowhere near #20in4 and concentrate on how I got two 📚books finished, another 📖two begun, and it was a brilliant ☀️sunny 🚲bike riding sort of a weekend.

Tagged book was pretty meh, good characters and decent plot but a lot of minor inconsistencies and it just seemed to be missing something.

I managed 11:51 out of 20:00 in the 1st #20in4 readathon and was quite pleased with that so I'm just going to try and get somewhere near that again! My brain needs to tune out of the real world for a couple of days. Hoping to finish the tagged book, which I've only just begun, as well as The Survivors. And maybe start something new. People being amazed by the steady passage of time always (mildly) irritates me... but how is it almost March??

My second Ware book and I‘m finding her books very hit or miss for me. This one‘s finale felt pretty obvious, and the lead character drove me nuts with her internal monologues. It felt like repetitive filler, which probably wasn‘t helped by the fact that I listened to this on audiobook (though Imogene Church‘s performance was perfection as usual).

Should I keep reading this? I‘m on Chapter 10, Hal has just met Mr. Treswick and he is taking her back to Trepassen House. Eh. Just eh. I need your help if you‘ve read this book. Ruth Ware is always a hit or miss for me.

shanaqui I enjoyed it in a very mild way, and would probably have put it down if I hadn't read it all in one go. If it's not speaking to you, I'd drop it! I didn't find the conclusions particularly mind-blowing or anything like that. 11mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Harriet "Hal" Westaway is barely surviving and keeping her head above water from both bill collectors and a sinister loan shark. Her luck seems to shift when she learns of a possible surprise inheritance. This one is full of mystery, suspense, and dark family drama with many twists and turns. This is my favorite Ruth Ware so far.

Listened to the audiobook. A bit long-winded and repetitive, which made for a slow start. But the narrator was terrific, so I stuck with it. It was okay.

Traci1 Ruth Ware really lucked out with Imogen Church as her narrator for most (all?) of her books. I've read one in print and didn't enjoy it. I've listened to two and thought they were good, but I think that Church had more to do with it than the writing. 1y

Nice... a bit long... kept me guessing... after the first third of the book it looked like there was no actual mistery to uncover... but then I realized that in Romanian we use the same word for "niece" and "granddaughter" ? after the first half of the book the twist was already obvious...
