I loved this series when I was younger, and I was afraid it wouldn't live up to that, but I had no reason to worry. It was just as good the second time around.

This book took a damn long time to get started. I didn't really care about the characters or (lack of) plot until page 250, about 100 pages from the end. Not so great. I can deal with lackluster plot if the characters are great, but I just ... didn't care right until the end.

Ah, well. I'll read the sequel because the ending got me interested, but I didn't enjoy this enough to give it a higher rating.

I loved The Elite. A lot of people talk about how the plot is not good blah, blah, blah, and they're not wrong. But I love it anyway. Not every book has to be a literary masterpiece for you to enjoy it. Sometimes you need something simple and a little silly.

I noticed recently that all these YA Fantasy romances (i.e., The Collection, Red Queen, Everless, etc.) follow the Hero's Journey SO PERFECTLY. That's not a bad thing, it's just cool to think about. I wonder if the authors did it knowingly or not.

I really wish this book would destroy the YA norm and have Mare be with Maven because he's better for her in LITERALLY EVERY WAY, but I don't think that's going to happen. /sigh

The Empire's Ghost didn't really start the party until it was absolutely sure it had me in its grasp, until it knew without a shadow of a doubt that I loved and would DIE FOR these characters. Then it threw them into a multitude of different plotlines that somehow all converged near the end and made way for the second book because Isabelle Steiger is a genius??? Oh my god????
