Tunneling to the Center of the Earth
Tunneling to the Center of the Earth | Kevin Wilson
10 posts | 13 read | 11 to read
Kevin Wilson's characters inhabit a world that moves seamlessly between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the fantastic. "Grand Stand-In" is narrated by an employee of a Nuclear Family Supplemental Providera company that supplies "stand-ins" for families with deceased, ill, or just plain mean grandparents. And in "Blowing Up On the Spot," a young woman works sorting tiles at a Scrabble factory after her parents have spontaneously combusted.Southern gothic at its best, laced with humor and pathos, these wonderfully inventive stories explore the relationship between loss and death and the many ways we try to cope with both.

Is Kevin Wilson becoming one of my favorite authors? Well, let's see...I read one of his novels three times, once aloud to my kids. Both his novels and his short stories make me laugh in the sad way I enjoy, like things are bad and likely to get worse, but there's this little thing, at least. So I suspect the answer is yes. These early stories of his feel a little different than his later writing, but still carry his hallmarks.

robinb I‘ve never read him but am putting him on my radar now. 😊 Do you have a favorite of his? 12mo
ImperfectCJ @robinb The one I read three times is Nothing to See Here. I really like his short stories, too (especially Baby, You're Gonna Be Mine), but that's my favorite of his novels. The audiobook narration is also excellent for that one. It's read by Marin Ireland, who plays Sissy in Umbrella Academy season 2. 12mo
robinb Actually NTSH is the one I was eyeing! I may start with that one. Thanks. 12mo
ImperfectCJ @robinb I look forward to hearing what you think of it! My whole family loves it so much (although my teens might just like the swearing and the fact that when I read it aloud to them, I used my best Tennessee-ish accent). 12mo

Wilson wrote most of these stories as an undergraduate, and his nascent talent was undeniable. Some ideas he fleshed out in later books, like one story featuring spontaneous combustion, but it was the parents instead of the kids. I preferred this collection to his later one, but he‘s an author whose novels I like more than his short stories. Now, I‘ve read all of his books, which means I have to wait until he writes a new one! 😩

Ruthiella That cover is a perfect match to the daffodils! 👏👏👏 14mo
Cinfhen This was a quirky collection and I definitely skimmed more than read 😉 14mo
Megabooks @Ruthiella I thought so too! They‘re still going strong! 14mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, you‘re definitely not as into short stories as I am! 14mo

Contemporary Twilight Zone is the best possible explanation for this book of short stories. Some had moral ground; others were just weird. This is my second book by Wilson and I am almost positive the man has an obsession with fire and SHC. The town I currently live in gets a mention, makes me wish I were doing some sort of reading challenge that would give me credit for that 😆 I actually really enjoyed the stories, weird as they were.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie You had me at Contemporary Twilight Zone. Stacked. 2y

I can‘t even put into words how much I loved this short story collection. I still have two stories to go but they could be total duds and I‘d still give the selection ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

With that said, this is my small selection of essays and short stories (and some of them are library books.) Now that I enjoy short stories, what do I absolutely need to add to my collection?

Reviewsbylola @Megabooks obviously I need your input. 3y

Reviewsbylola Yeah I‘ve been curious about the Nutting. The Wilson (have you read it?!?) is bizarre too but I‘m guessing in a much different way. 😂 @Megabooks 3y

I managed to finish one more ARC for #NetGalleyReviewathon @sprainedbrain for a total of 6 completed 🎉
This is a collection of short stories by Kevin Wilson originally published in 2009 and now being re-released tomorrow.
Wildly imaginative, 12 stories that allow you a glimpse into the weird and wonderful distorted world of Mr. Wilson.
I found most of the stories engaging and entertaining. My favorites were Grand Stand-In & Go,Fight, Win.

Cinfhen I think you‘d like this collection @Megabooks 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen hmmm...I did not love his most recent collection of short stories. I think I‘m going to see if the library will get this one. My love of some authors long novels doesn‘t always translate to stories. I‘m unsure of Kevin at this point. 4y
Cinfhen Interesting @Megabooks this could easily be a #BorrowNotBuy 💕Hopefully the library will get it 4y

This was my first time reading this author. Not entirely sure what I think of it yet. The writing was definitely good, topics/events were interesting to say the least. As with almost every short story collection, there are some that are better than others but not a bad one among them in my humble opinion.

4/5

"Grand Stand-In" was my favorite about a woman whose job it is to pretend to be a grandmother to her clients' families.
"Mortal Kombat" made me sad and angry. Two guys exploring their sexuality. Explicit content. One gets uncomfortable and punches the other, hard. This scenario plays out multiple times.
