Daddy | Emma Cline
The eagerly-awaited new book by Emma Cline, author of the global phenomenon The Girls The stories in Emma Clines stunning first collection consider the dark corners of human experience, exploring the fault lines of power between men and women, parents and children, past and present. A man travels to his sons school to deal with the fallout of a violent attack and to make sure his son will not lose his college place. But what exactly has his son done? And who is to blame? A young woman trying to make it in LA, working in a clothes shop while taking acting classes, turns to a riskier way of making money but will be forced to confront the danger of the game shes playing. And a family coming together for Christmas struggle to skate over the lingering darkness caused by the very ordinary brutality of a troubled husband and father. These outstanding stories examine masculinity, male power and broken relationships, while revealing with astonishing insight and clarity those moments of misunderstanding that can have life-changing consequences. And there is an unexpected violence, ever-present but unseen, in the depiction of the complicated interactions between men and women, and families. Subtle, sophisticated and displaying an extraordinary understanding of human behaviour, these stories are unforgettable.

Yeah, I loved this book. Cline‘s collection of short stories is a clever, insightful study of power in human relationships. Cline is especially nuanced in her exploration of male power, and the range of ways it influences the lives of both men and women, directly and indirectly. As in Cline‘s novel, sense of place, atmosphere, and internal dialogue are on point. I found this hard to fault.

For some reason I feel compelled to reread some of my favorite books of the year at the end of it. While Daddy isn‘t the best short story collection I read this year, it is solid. I enjoyed all the stories even more the second time. Northeast Regional, as a stand-alone story, is one of the best of the year.

Tbh, I hated The Girls, but Cline has come into a more mature, interesting voice in this collection. A solid 4⭐️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was looking at Wordslut, that one‘s on my list for next year. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And I love the colors shelved that way. 4y
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Wordslut is awesome! Another one I have read twice this year. I think you‘d like it. And thanks re: the shelves! 4y

4🌟I loved certain stories more than others but for the most part this is a pretty solid collection. These stories are dark, and a bit depressing focusing heavily on abusive behavior and abandonment. Character wise my only complaint is lack of diversity. Obviously from the title, these stories are themed around Daddy issues in one form or another. All these issues seem to bubble up to the surface without boiling over though. #bookreview

What a surprising collection! Generally, I feel short stories are a place to have characters who couldn‘t be a full novel. Sometimes, I‘d call them “loud” or “improbable.”

Cline has created a much quieter collection. Few stories took improbable turns or had unfinished ends. Once I got used to her style, I found I really enjoyed these 10 gems. Standouts include “Los Angeles,” “Northeast School,” and “Marion.” Nothing like The Girls @BarbaraBB !

Megabooks My book came with two covers for some reason!! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
KarenUK Thanks for sharing your review.... I‘m really looking forward to this one...💕 4y

erzascarletbookgasm Thanks for the tag! 💕 I‘m not really big on short stories, but your review makes me want to read it. I‘ll see if I can borrow this. 😊 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB you‘re welcome! 😘 4y
Megabooks @erzascarletbookgasm I think borrowing would be good, but I think these are good short stories for people who don‘t usually like/read them. 👍🏻 4y
Reviewsbylola So you‘re saying it‘s much better than The Girls. 🤔 4y

Megabooks @BarbaraBB Did I write a blistering review here because I couldn‘t stand that book!? This one is very different. Her style is very subtle, which I‘m beginning to enjoy. 4y
Megabooks @erzascarletbookgasm thanks. I‘m three stories in and getting used to her style. She‘s very subtle in her tells and twists, but I‘m coming to like that. 4y
BarbaraBB I don‘t remember your review but I couldn‘t stand that one. So flimsy without any depth. I hope this one‘s better! 4y

Just read Emma Cline‘s dark humorous short story in this issue of the New Yorker. Must be in her upcoming collection Daddy. A story about Harvey Weinstein‘s final night before his verdict. Recommend.

SamAnne In the June 8th/15th issue. 4y

Interesting that Emma Cline chose to follow up her debut titled The Girls, with a short story collection titled Daddy. There are 10 stories about men, not all are necessarily fathers, although most are and nearly all involve a female protagonist. We have girls with “daddy issues” and father‘s struggling with abandonment, affection, ambition, success, aging, parenting and accountability. Most stories were good. #ARC #NetGalley Marion was my fav 💜

KarenUK I loved The Girls, and this sounds really good. Stacked! 📚💕 4y
Cinfhen If you enjoy short story collections I think you‘ll like this one @KarenUK xx 4y
cariashley I don‘t do a lot of ARCs but they invited me to read this one since I‘d read The Girls ARC - I‘m excited to read it! 4y

Cinfhen If you hated The Girls @BarbaraBB I‘m not sure how much you‘ll like this one. It‘s different because they are short stories but the writing style is similar 🤷🏼‍♀️For you I‘d say #BorrowNotBuy 4y

#ARC #NetGalley went to the beach to watch my son surf but the waves weren‘t really strong enough. Good thing I had my Kindle on hand. Started reading Emma Cline‘s newest project- a short story collection. So far, I‘m enjoying most of the stories. She‘s a very provocative writer. She knows how to say a lot without really saying too much ( does that make sense??) A few of these stories would make for a great novel/ I hope she‘ll expand on some.

Cinfhen @Megabooks you will probably like this collection 5y
Cinfhen I know you‘re on #NetGalley now, maybe you can get an ARC @Megabooks 5y
