The Persephone Book of Short Stories
The Persephone Book of Short Stories | Harry Hill
36 posts | 9 read | 17 to read
Most of these stories focus on the small, quiet or unspoken intricacies of human relationships rather than grand dramas. The use of metaphor is delicate and subtle; often the women are strong and capable and the men less so; shallow and selfish motives are exposed. The dates of these stories range from 1909 to 1986 and there are thirty in all. The ten stories which are already in print in Persephone editions of their work are by Katherine Mansfield, Irne Nmirovsky, Mollie Panter-Downes (twice), Elizabeth Berridge, Dorothy Whipple, Frances Towers, Margaret Bonham, Diana Gardner and Diana Athill. The ten stories which have already been published in the Quarterly and Biannually are by EM Delafield; Dorothy Parker; Dorothy Whipple; Edith Wharton; Phyllis Bentley; Dorothy Canfield Fisher; Norah Hoult; Angelica Gibbs; Penelope Mortimer; and Georgina Hammick. And lastly the ten stories which are new are by Susan Glaspell, Pauline Smith, Malachi Whitaker, Betty Miller, Helen Hull, Kay Boyle, Shirley Jackson, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Elizabeth Spencer and Penelope Fitzgerald.

Finished this month‘s stories, and they each reflect WWII in a different way.

In Letters, a writer‘s home is obliterated in the blitz, and she couldn‘t save her most precious items. In House, a son reflects on what drove his parents apart. In Decision, a man working in England gets news a friend died in the Italian theater, and it changes the way he sees himself. In Sit, two Canadian women give a German family payback for treating them rudely.

LeahBergen Those damn vengeful Canadians. 😉 2mo
Megabooks @LeahBergen y‘all are all the same. I can head north without getting punked! 😉🤣 2mo

I‘m really enjoying working my way through this 2nd collection of stories from Persephone.

Whipple is delightful, and in After Tea, a teenager looking to break free from her parents gets the shock of her life. In Monsieur Rose, the horror of evacuating war-torn France is brought home. Benson writes beautifully about a Black woman from the Great Migration feeling at home in NYC. In Frowning, a woman breaks away from an ungrateful employer.

LeahBergen I just had this book off the shelf this afternoon. I was reorganizing my Persephones, as one does. 😆 3mo
Cinfhen This sounds like a perfect collection!! How wonderful 💜 3mo
BarbaraBB My bff is reading this as well and loving it. Such comfort reading she says! 3mo

My four short stories this month come from the Second Persephone book of them.

WWI is often subsumed into the second one, so it was interesting to read about a woman reflecting on death on Armistice Day in the 1930s.

Thunder Shower I didn‘t get. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In The Exile, a niece finds quite a surprise when she travels to visit her uncle‘s grave in China.

Safety Zone was a beautiful four-page story about welcoming Jewish refugees to America.

LeahBergen You‘re REALLY making me want to get to this one soon now! 4mo
Megabooks @LeahBergen it‘s fantastic so far!! I‘m excited for the Whipple next month too! 4mo

This is actually the second book of short stories (132), and I am loving it so far! Each month I‘m trying to read four stories from one of my anthologies.

Sharp‘s story about an annoyingly persistent man trying to flirt and mansplain on a bus could have easily been written today. The spinster aunt in Bedquilt made my heart swell and break simultaneously. Ball wasn‘t memorable. Wife was very modern in its depiction of divorce and domestic ennui.

LeahBergen I‘m looking forward to this volume as I loved the first. 👍 5mo
Megabooks @LeahBergen I‘m halfway through the first and agree it‘s fantastic! 5mo

I read the first half of this wonderful collection, spanning 1909-1938. (I always planned to divide it at WWII.) My favorite stories were the first, “From A to Z,” and of course, the Dorothy Parker and Edith Wharton stories.

As with any mixed author collection, some stories were stronger than others, but I found something unique in each story, so definitely a pick!

First #bookspinbingo square!

AvidReader25 Dorothy Parker stories are always a win! 2y
Megabooks @AvidReader25 totally!! She was definitely at her witty best. 😊 2y

Mdargusch We are going back to the Persephone book store next month. What are your favorite Persephone books? 4y
LeahBergen @Mdargusch Oh, lucky you!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I think you‘ve already read some of my favourites but I‘m not sure. I loved The Diary of a Provincial Lady, Miss Buncle‘s Book, The Priory, The Making of a Marchioness, and The Fortnight in September. My most recent buys (still TBR) are Guard Your Daughters and Vain Shadow (they both sound great). I have several more Dorothy Whipples on my TBR - she‘s always good. 4y
LeahBergen @Mdargusch Read the blurb for this one 4y
Mdargusch Thanks! I have that one marked to buy already! It does sound good. 4y
LeahBergen @Mdargusch Have you read any of the other ones above? 👆🏻I know your girls have some of them. 😆 Oh, and this one (still TBR) was the Queen Mum‘s favourite 4y

Congratulations on your 100K milestone, @vivastory! 😀 Thanks for the awesome giveaway.
Before I sold my soul to Amazon, Crossword was my go-to place for books when I'd freshly fallen in love with reading. It's where I bought all of my early reads from classics to Stephen King books. Bookstores I'd really love to visit someday are Persephone Books and the Strand! 😍😍

vivastory Thanks, Rohit! I too have sold my soul to Amazon. I imagine if littens took a trip to Persephone we'd probably buy out their complete stock. Ditto the Strand! 5y
emilyhaldi Persephone and The Strand are definitely two of my favs ❤️❤️ 5y
BiblioLitten Crossword has a very good collection. There was this store named Spellbound. But that closed down. 😔 5y

My first #Persephonebooks online order! I went with this volume to sample more authors. And, it‘s my tribute to Persephone and the much-needed return to Spring!🌷

theresidentromantic What is this? I'm in favor of all things Persephone! 5y
emilyhaldi I 💗 Persephone books so much!! If only shipping wasn't so expensive 😩 5y
peacegypsy @emilyhaldi Right? And you don‘t even get a little cut if you order multiple books (or I didn‘t see one). Maybe something for them to consider? If I could get 2books for the same shipping expense, I‘d buy two. Sigh. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Sophoclessweetheart @emilyhaldi if you contact them before you order and are ordering 8 or more books they do a discounted shipping. The only reason they charge shipping for each book you order is because they dispatch all books separately in their own cardboard envelope so you don‘t have to be in to get your parcel. I can see why some would prefer the cheaper shipping though! X 5y
emilyhaldi @Wanderingwithwords wow I love this insider tip!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 thank you!!! This might be a game changer for me... 😬 5y

🍶💐✍🏼📖I wanted to share a podcast for the Persephone lovers on Litsy. Tea and Tattle with Miranda and Sophie did a wonderful podcast devoted to their favorite Persephone books (October 24). Overall, I love this podcast. The Persephone episode was one I was scribbling notes down while listening. For newbies it‘s a helpful list. Seasoned Persephone readers might pat themselves on the back for a job well done/read. ❤️

Mdargusch Thanks for the heads up. We will be visiting this store soon so it will be helpful to get ideas! 5y

This is my most cherished #bookhaul ever! I‘ve coveted #Persephone books for a long time, but they‘re a little pricey. I only own ONE grey edition like those pictured here, and when I was looking at my wishlist on BookDepo a few weeks ago to treat myself to ONE more, I noticed one was only $3. I found all these too for under $4! I was sure it was a typo so I ordered them all hoping they would arrive safely. And they did for less than $30!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That is a big score!! 👏 5y

EvieBee @Jess_Read_This Thanks for rocking my world. I‘ve been blasting through all the episodes. I‘d never have found it on my own. If you can think of anymore Podcasts I need to subscribe to let me know! Thank you again! 🤗♥️♥️ 5y
Jess_Read_This @EvieBee Yay!!! I‘m glad you enjoyed it. I have never looked forward to a Tuesday before until I discovered this podcast and that‘s when they have new episodes! If you enjoy history, especially women in history, I really enjoy The History Chicks. Susan and Beckett read biographies/research a woman in history and chronicle her life from start to finish, then share reading suggestions at the end. It‘s a favorite of mine. 5y
Jess_Read_This The Readers is another one I like though not as much as Tea and Tattles and The History Chicks. Those two are my favorite. If you are on Instagram- Miranda‘s accounts are gorgeous! She‘s @ mirandasnotebook and @ mirandasbookcase. Sophie has an account too @ Sophie.perdita (edited) 5y
Jess_Read_This I‘m listening to a new podcast now. It‘s called Tea and Books. I‘m only just into the Jan 22 episode but I‘m enjoying it so far. I‘ve written down four books to look up already and I‘m 10 minutes in! I can‘t speak for any of the episodes though, so it might be worth checking out. I just didn‘t want to say I recommended it just yet since I haven‘t listened to many episodes yet ☺️ But it is seeming to be a quite promising one! (edited) 5y

This is a large and robust collection of 29 short stories, all authored by women, and originally published between 1909 and 1986. Some of the authors are otherwise published by #persephonebooks but others, like Dorothy Parker and Shirley Jackson, are not. #somethingforsept

BekahB HA! Funny how cats think that's the way our priorities should work. 😸 7y
Eyelit Totally @BekahB - they are not here to be our companions, we are here to serve them! 7y

Taking a break for dinner. I've been dipping into the Persephone book of short stories in between graphic novels, and that's been fun. I'm only 8ish hours into the #24in48 and am beginning to suspect I may not actually be able to do 24 full hours. Fingers crossed, though. I'm enjoying it, regardless.
