pickThere's a lot to like about this historical mystery, though I found Sarah a bit too inclined to judge, and overall it was a bit darker and more filled with trauma than I usually find enjoyable.
CN: misogyny, homophobia, rape, violence, medical trauma, forced institutionalisation, forced sterilisation, probably more that aren't springing to mind.
I'm finding this one difficult going because the main character has plainly been horrifically raped and is being blamed for it in a period-typical manner. I don't think I'd have chosen it for myself if I'd known about that part, honestly; I was interested in the fact that she's studying to be a doctor and ends up trying to discover the murderer of a body she receives to dissect.
so-soI really like the narrator and the mystery is interesting. I especially like how the city of Edinburgh becomes almost a character in the story. However I think the constant explaining in the book of how Victorian mores oppressed women became tedious toward the end. I don‘t appreciate preaching in my fiction even when I agree with the author

Soooooo.......I totally just bought the U.K. version of this book (on left) after having bought the US version a few months ago, solely because I like the cover better.......
pickDelving into the dissection rooms, slums and wynds of my beloved Edinburgh this fun, fairly dark period mystery was suitably atmospheric. It looks primarily at women in all walks of life from brothels to townhouses to the early days of female medical students and even though the mystery was sometimes buried the story and characters kept me reading. There are flaws but I enjoyed it in spite of them and I'd pick up future books if it became a series
