Desperate for a proper education, Sarah turns to one of the city s ramshackle charitable hospitals for additional training. The St Giles Infirmary for Women ministers to the downtrodden and drunk, the thieves and whores with nowhere else to go. In this environment, alongside a group of smart and tough teachers, Sarah gets quite an education. But when Lucy, one of Sarah s patients, turns up in the university dissecting room as a battered corpse, Sarah finds herself drawn into a murky underworld of bribery, brothels, and body snatchers Painfully aware of just how little separates her own life from that of her former patient s, Sarah is determined to find out what happened to Lucy and bring those responsible for her death to justice. But as she searches for answers in Edinburgh s dank alleyways, bawdy houses and fight clubs, Sarah comes closer and closer to uncovering one of Edinburgh s most lucrative trades, and, in doing so, puts her own life at risk An irresistible read with a fantastic heroine, beautifully drawn setting, fascinating insights into what it was like to study medicine as a woman at that time, The Wages of Sin is a stunning debut that heralds a striking new voice in historical fiction. I really like the narrator and the mystery is interesting. I especially like how the city of Edinburgh becomes almost a character in the story. However I think the constant explaining in the book of how Victorian mores oppressed women became tedious toward the end. I don‘t appreciate preaching in my fiction even when I agree with the author

I was sent this from the publisher and it sounds really great. A murder mystery set in Victorian Edinburgh.

Ashley_Nicoletto And it's gorgeous. 7y
wordslinger42 @ScorpioBookDreams I love the cover!! I always see lots of Littens posting about getting ARCs from publishers; how does that work exactly? Is there a specific way to sign up for receiving ARCs? 7y
Moray_Reads I quite enjoyed this one 7y

Delving into the dissection rooms, slums and wynds of my beloved Edinburgh this fun, fairly dark period mystery was suitably atmospheric. It looks primarily at women in all walks of life from brothels to townhouses to the early days of female medical students and even though the mystery was sometimes buried the story and characters kept me reading. There are flaws but I enjoyed it in spite of them and I'd pick up future books if it became a series

vivastory Sounds interesting. Adding to tbr. 7y
Moray_Reads @vivastory it's not light as such, you know with the murder, squalor and sexism of Victorian Edinburgh but it was a good palette cleanser 7y
