A mixed bag. I can see why these books are published as one; the first felt like an extended summary of a self-insertion romance. A lot of it felt forced, halfhearted, or awkward — too much tell, not enough show. To a modern eye, there‘s some cultural insensitivity.

There‘s also humor, though, and some lyrical descriptions like those in The Secret Garden. The story picks up in the second half, and the intense end turned this into a 4/5, barely.

“The outburst was in fact so strongly italicised that she felt the next moment almost as if she had been a little indecent.” 😆

This book feels a bit like the author phoned it in, but it does have moments here and there. I like that the protagonist is described, in an amusingly writerly way, as someone who speaks (and feels!) in italics.

TheAromaofBooks I struggled a bit with this pair of books, and almost wonder if I was reading edited versions?? It felt like connecting bits of the story were missing! 5y
Sunraven @TheAromaofBooks It definitely took some effort for me to get through about the halfway point of the two books together, and then it got easier, although for me, until that point, it felt like the author was using a stereotypical romance plot as a framework and narrating more than showing us the events of the story, except where she paused for someone to cry or think in detail about clothing or make a “clever” remark. 😆 (edited) 5y

Maybe I shouldn‘t have started this one right after a Jane Austen ... Who can compete with her for love stories set in England? 😉 But this has been on my TBR for a while, and it was looking at me. So far, I feel like I‘ve read the word “fresh” used to describe people about 20 times (at 28%). Here‘s hoping Part Two is a little less fixated on refreshment...

Seeking help to add to my #persephonebooks collection. I received a 6-month book subscription and I need to pick 6 books! Any suggestions? It‘s so hard to narrow it down! #persephone

LeahBergen Well well well... you‘ve come to the right place. 😆😆😆 What sort of novels do you like? Coming of age? Mystery? Humorous? World War I or II? Children‘s? 5y
LeahBergen Off the top of my head (if you already like the sort of book they republish), you can‘t go wrong with Someone at a Distance, Miss Buncle‘s Book (the first Persephone I read!), The Diary of a Provincial Lady, Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day ... and I‘ll keep thinking. 😄 5y
JenniferP @LeahBergen Hmmm. I like coming of age about women, comedy of manners, quiet books that subtly reveal real-life truths. I do also like mysteries. I will admit to a little WWII fatigue at the moment, but I'd still read from that era if the book is quality. I think I'll like most of the books Persephone publishes, so I'm needing help narrowing it down! There are easily 20 in the catalog that I'm interested in on a first glance! 5y

LeahBergen As far as “quiet life” reads, I adored 5y
LeahBergen And one that‘s a really fun pulpy mystery read is 5y
Liz_M I endorse @LeahBergen rec for Miss Pettigrew! It's charming, fun, and a 1001-book 5y
charl08 Something a bit different is Hilda Bernstein's memoir of the anti-apartheid movement and how it affected her family. 5y
BarbaraBB I loved (edited) 5y
BarbaraBB ... it‘s a real woman-coming-of-age 5y
BarbaraBB And I am personally looking forward to this one, recommended by @Reviewsbylola 5y
BarbaraBB Also I think @emilyhaldi may have some suggestions 💕 5y
Reviewsbylola When I got a subscription to Persephone, I went thru the catalogue and marked about 20 books that I thought sounded good, then I emailed Persephone the list and told them to pick from that. It was fun because it was still a surprise as to what book I would get! 5y
JenniferP @Reviewsbylola oh I love that I idea! I might do that. Thanks! 5y
emilyhaldi Omg you KNOW my first suggestion was going to be Patience 🤗 @BarbaraBB still my favorite ❤️ I also loved 5y
emilyhaldi Another good coming of age story 💕 5y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi Yes I did know that 🙃. I read that one because of your review. And I love your idea too @Reviewsbylola (edited) 5y

Emily Fox-Seton is a humble, cheerful creature, so it #cutslikeaknife when she realizes that not everyone has good intentions.

This was initially published as two books. The first is about Emily‘s background and how she comes to marry a lord. The second book is what happens once they are married and she is left alone with the lord‘s conniving heir apparent. The two books were very different but both extremely satisfying.

Cinfhen She looks cunning ~ not a chick I‘d want to mess with 🙄 6y
LeahBergen Great review! 👏🏻 6y
Reviewsbylola Yeah I‘m not sure why this painting was chosen or what it is meant to represent but it‘s the painting Persephone uses on their site for this book. @Cinfhen 6y
Mdargusch Great painting for this book! 6y

Getting ready for our trip to England in a few weeks by reading another Persephone gem. This one is truly delightful, and I was even more excited once I saw @LeahBergen sing its praises.

AmyG I will be sending Daisy Jones today. So you will have it in time for vacation! 6y
Reviewsbylola Oh thank you! I will definitely be saving it for then. 😄 @AmyG 6y
LeahBergen Isn‘t it a delight? ❤️ 6y

Reviewsbylola It really is. I would normally be annoyed by someone as pure of heart as Emily but she‘s pretty endearing. @LeahBergen 6y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola Right? 😆 I find this applies to almost all of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s characters. 6y
Mdargusch I really liked this one. 6y
