I was a bit sceptical about this series. I've read mostly all McDermid's other books but found that I didn't always like her earlier works. So I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised! I quite like the obnoxious Lindsay Gordon. Not in a hurry to read the next, but I will get around to it eventually.

An oldie but goodie. I remember buying this years ago when searching for crime fiction with lesbian protagonists. Lindsay‘s sexuality isn‘t something she wrestles with, she‘s just a gay lady. I found that so refreshing particularly given the fact this was written in 1987 and I was all of 10 years old. 😂 Reads a bit like a cozy mystery. #SeriesRead2021 #StartASeries
HaveI mentioned how much I dislike amateur detectives in fiction? I had hoped Lindsay Gordon, “cynical socialist lesbian feminist journalist” would supersede this, but alas, she was just as meddling and bumbling as most. There‘s a lot of characterization though monologue as well, and I never connected with Lindsay— maybe if narration had been in first person... I was in the mood for a mystery so I found it compelling enough to finish, but barely.
Picked up this next read at the library book sale last week. I haven‘t been reading many mysteries lately, and I‘ve never tried Val McDermid, but it only took the first sentence of the back cover for me to add it to my stack. I think I need a cynical socialist lesbian feminist journalist at the moment.
@Jennifer3 MORE?!?!! #summerbookswap love!!! Thank you *ever* so much! 😍🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍📚📚 #mysteries #mystery
First Val McDermid book starring lesbian feminist investigative reporter Lindsay Gordon Report For Murder. I love her latest stuff and this was fun but clearly she was still learning her craft. Both her writing and her plotting improve enormously in later books- the idea that the headmistress of a posh girls school would authorise an independent investigation into a murder on school premises defies believe. Recommended to hardcore fans only.
Starting from the beginning with Val McDermid tonight
lunchtime reading!
