Warrior Politics
Warrior Politics: Why Leadership Demands a Pagan Ethos | Robert D. Kaplan
6 posts | 8 read | 28 to read
The side that knows when to fight and when not will take the victory. There are roadways not to be traveled, armies not to be attacked, walled cities not to be assaulted. Sun-Tzu We live in dangerous times, when a new kind of leadership is required. Visionary and ruthlessly strategic, Warrior Politics extracts the best of the wisdom of the ages for modern leaders who are faced with the complex life-and-death challenges of todays worldand determined to win. Sun-Tzu urges leaders to plan and calculate like a hungry man. Machiavelli defines a policy not by its excellence but by its outcome. Churchill derives his greatness from his imagination of history. Livy shows that the vigor to face down adversaries must ultimately come from pride in our own past achievements. Never mind if they call your caution timidity, your wisdom sloth, your generosity weakness, he writes. It is better that a wise enemy should fear you than that foolish friends should praise. Men often oppose a thing merely because they have no agency in planning it, Alexander Hamilton says, or because it may have been planned by those whom they dislike. Replete with maxims, warnings, examples from history, and shrewd recommendations, Warrior Politics wrests from the past the lessons we need to arm ourselves for the present. It offers an invaluable template for any decision-makerin foreign policy or in businessfaced with high stakes and inadequate knowledge of a mine-filled terrain. As we gear ourselves up for a new kind of war, no book is more prescient, more shrewd, or more essential. From the Hardcover edition.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Do you enjoy biographies? I love 'em! I usually listen to them on audio. I want to make a point of next year reading your favorite, so which was your favorite bio that you read this year? I'll start making a list & then I'll check it twice 😆😜. I read so many great ones in 2016, & my favorite is probably this one about Cicero. What an extraordinary man in an extraordinary time! It was presented well & the narrator was great! 5 stars! #BestBioRead

Amandajoy I usually read more, but only got a couple in this year. This one on Roald Dahl was fascinating. 7y
Nat_Reads The Professor and the Madman-its a wildly interesting tale about the creation of the OED; bio (ish) of the two primary figures. Currently reading the Alexander Hamilton and its great 👍 7y

Chassie Lab Girl was a great memoir. The audio was stellar. 7y
UwannaPublishme I second the vote for Lab Girl! 👍🏻 7y
[DELETED] 3323341091 if you have interests in rebellious behavior, civil liberties, and jazz music - try Nat Hentoff's 7y
LitsyGoesPostal 😁👏🏻👏🏻 7y
chlobee It combines the author's story with beautiful writing and a literary biography of T. H. White. And ferocious hawks. 👍 I would also second Lab Girl! 7y
Centique Did you ever read Wild Swans? That's probably the book that made me fall in love with biographies and memoirs. I hand sold a tonne of those as a student working in a bookshop too. 7y
I-read-and-eat If you liked this book in Cicero you might enjoy my favourite bio read this year about Caligula. Cicero fought to maintain the republic and failed and Caligula might be one of the best examples why having an emperor is not the best idea 😂 This biography is great and doesn't just focus on him being crazy 7y
Alisnazzy If autobiography is ok I would highly recommend Armenian Golgotha. But have some tissues handy. 7y
Zelma I posted in another thread, but will repeat here in case you miss it. My absolute favorite biography is Lindbergh by A. Scott Berg. He is a fantastic writer and creates a fascinating and detailed story. 7y

Pickpick

Before this book, all I knew about Cicero was that he was a great Roman orator. Little did I know how powerful and influential he truly was & is through today! He lived through some of history's most important events--when the Roman Empire ended as a Republic & became a dictatorship--and knew some of its most famous people--Julius Caesar, Cato, Cleopatra, Augustus, etc. A+ audio narration! #PairWith: Capezzana Conti Contini Sangiovese, room temp.

Eugeniavb We should create a hashtag for history books! 8y
niftytiffd I visited his tomb when I was in Italy about 5 years ago. -I'd love to learn more about his life. Thanks for the recommendation😊 8y

Eugeniavb #historyread sounds 👌🏽 8y
sneirr Cicero is such an interesting person! My favourite fact about him - well let's say, one of my favourite facts - is that he actually wrote an epic about himself. Also apparently he wasn't part of the conspiracy agains Caesar because he would have boasted about it and so betray the plan (not sure how factual that is). 8y
Laalaleighh Fascinating. Stacking 📚 8y
niftytiffd @MrBook Lol. Yes... it was amazing (and not as creepy as it sounds😉)! -I was studying abroad and the class was Archaeology of Roman Italy. I'd love a hashtag for history books! #historyread is a great suggestion👍 @Eugeniavb @MrBook 8y
