This retelling of #Aliceinwonderland was definitely dark and was relatively creative, but the writing was a little disjointed, and neither the writing nor the characters transported me to another place; it also felt that many of the "dark" elements were forced or for shock. And the love story wasn't convincing. It's worth reading, but not purchasing. #TheLookingGlassWars are a much better reimagining of the Alice in Wonderland series.
Reading this darkened version of #aliceinwonderland. I love reimagined and #grownupfairytales, but not sure the writing is doing it for me. The storyline is creative and unique though--full review once it's done! Also, please enjoy my Venetian cat bookmark! #alice #femaleauthors #fantasy #nevertoooldforfairytales
#Spelled is a unique retelling of #TheWizardofOz, and while very cute it's a young YA novel and the writing just didn't grip me or impress me. The protagonist, Dorothea, becomes more self aware, but the internal dialogue is mostly teenage-retorts, seeming a little at odds with the gravity of the situation and her age. Would recommend for a younger teen who would likely relate more to Dorothea and the language #YA #fiction #clickyourheelsthreetimes
"...being arrested and shot at in West Africa...and the first ever advice columnist recommended that a woman fearing lonely spinsterhood get down to the docks and find a sex-starved sailor." ?#ninetypercentofeverything #nonfiction #maritimeindustry #booksaboutboats #booksaboutships
At the allergist and reading #ninetypercentofeverything to pass the time. It's a book about the maritime shipping industry--I know, sounds boring, but it truly is mind-blowing and it's actually riveting! I lost count of the number of times I've turned to a friend and said "wow! Did you know...?" while reading this book #nonfiction #journalism #booksaboutboats #booksaboutships
This is an excellent book for anyone looking to learn more about women's roles in Greco-Roman society and how those roles translated into women's roles in the early Christian Church. St. Thekla is an amazing figure and is very much constructed as an apostle in the Acts of Paul and Thekla. This book does a great job of looking at the text critically and contextually. Highly recommend, because it's not overly academia, just excellent #christianread
I just finished #Rebecca and while I would not call it "the best novel of the (20th) century" as it was awarded, the story was compelling and the writing was absolutely exquisite and transportive: the descriptions were so beautiful and exact that you really did feel and see precisely what the author wanted. The main character is relatable, though with less gumption than I desired. I recommend reading this #classicbook at least once
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again...Nature had come into her own again and little by little, in her stealthy insidious way had encroached upon the drive with long tenacious fingers. The woods, always a menace even in the past, had triumphed in the end. "The house a sepulchre, our fear and suffering lay buried in the ions. There would be no resurrection." #Rebecca #classicbooks
Just dashing into my local library before they close for the night. Dolley Maddison is a fantastic place to study, and their collection is fairly small but pretty good for the size. Couldn't manage to get Rebecca earlier for the #SpineCrackersBookClub, but figured I'd give it a go anyway! #locallibrary
Devoured the first two, on to the third! And as the cashier consoled me when I lamented my continued preference for fantasy: "NO. Fantasy helps us relate to and process reality better than non-fiction--there have been studies, I've written a thesis about it; don't apologize for loving fantasy!" #LunarChronicles #fantasy #scifi #saturdayreading
Reading and fruiting on the deck of our cruise, reading the Sword of Summer. Really like Magnus Chase; another good one from Riordan #summerread #booksoncruise #rickriordan
One of my favorites ever. Incredible portrayal of the South and the complexity and strength of character in the face of adversity. Scarlet is charming and Melanie is a role model. The writing is pure poetry and the story is captivating. Definitely read this classic
Currently reading at a French bakery in DC. All the humor and charm you expect from Rick Riordan and the Percy Jackson world, but perhaps not quite as delightful as the original series. Apollo will definitely have you chuckling as he stumbles through our world
