Chocolate Me!
Chocolate Me! | Taye Diggs
5 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
The boy is teased for looking different than the other kids. His skin is darker, his hair curlier. He tells his mother he wishes he could be more like everyone else. And she helps him to see how beautiful he really, truly is. For years before they both achieved acclaim in their respective professions, good friends Taye Diggs and Shane W. Evans wanted to collaborate on Chocolate Me!, a book based on experiences of feeling different and trying to fit in as kids. Now, both men are fathers and see more than ever the need for a picture book that encourages all people, especially kids, to love themselves.

Dark chocolate all the way. I never liked white chocolate, and I don't have much of a taste for milk chocolate anymore.

Mounds is a favorite chocolate Halloween treat, followed closely by raisinets

Mehso-so

Struggling with this picture book rating. On one hand I want to like it because we need more diverse books & the mom does affirm the son‘s worth. On the other she bakes cupcakes & he takes them to the 3 white kids who were picking on him & all is right with the world. Until the next time he doesn‘t have cupcakes? The kids haven‘t really learned anything & the responsibility to reconcile was placed on the bullied rather than the bullies. ⬇️

megnews Maybe it‘s because I‘m currently reading Caste, but I think this would not have sat well with me had I read it to my kids when they were young. I think Taye Diggs meant well but this missed the mark for me. (edited) 3y
mandarchy Thanks for the review. I wonder if it just didn't age well. Would we have accepted this in 2011? I think it's a sad reflection of reality, not meant to instruct, but inform. 3y
megnews @mandarchy it probably depends on how long someone has been awake to these problems. I don‘t think I would have liked this in 2011 but I can see how more people are aware now so more people may be uncomfortable with it. 3y

I am thrilled at how history is about to repeat itself AND I can now start reading children's books again. I wanted to get all the books they had at the library for my granddaughter today. However, I got only these.

Tamra One of my great joys is reading to/with my kids. The world of kid lit is amazing! 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Yes! Its been awhile since my "kids" are in their 30s now. It seems that there are a lot more great books @Tamra 7y
