The Big Green Tent
The Big Green Tent: A Novel | Ludmila Ulitskaya
The Big Green Tent epitomizes what we think of when we imagine the classic Russian novel. With epic breadth and intimate detail, Ludmila Ulitskayas remarkable work tells the story of three school friends who meet in Moscow in the 1950s and go on to embody the heroism, folly, compromise, and hope of the Soviet dissident experience. These three boysan orphaned poet; a gifted, fragile pianist; and a budding photographer with a talent for collecting secretsstruggle to reach adulthood in a society where their heroes have been censored and exiled. Rich with love stories, intrigue, and a cast of dissenters and spies, The Big Green Tent offers a panoramic survey of life after Stalin and a dramatic investigation into the prospects for individual integrity in a society defined by the KGB. Each of the central characters seeks to transcend an oppressive regime through art, a love of Russian literature, and activism. And each of them ends up face-to-face with a secret police that is highly skilled at fomenting paranoia, division, and self-betrayal. A man and his wife each become collaborators, without the other knowing; an artist is chased into the woods, where he remains in hiding for four years; a researcher is forced to deem a patient insane, damning him to torture in a psychiatric ward. Ludmila Ulitskayas novel belongs to the tradition of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Pasternak: it is a work consumed with politics, love, and beliefand a revelation of life in dark times.

Mehso-so

This book was really dense and long. Full of Russian thought processes and ideas, history and literature. The characters felt well developed and human. The story was not told chronologically, which got a little confusing at times.

I'm really interested in 20th-century Russian literature and history, and there were parts of this that engaged me intellectually here and there. But ultimately, at around a third of the way in, I simply don't care about any of these characters, and find the writing/translation to be dull dull dull. I'm out of here.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Yes. I understand. I felt the same way. 7y

How excited am I to finally be starting this today! It's 22 hours or so on audio, so it'll be a long-term commitment but I'm up for it!

Hooked_on_books I'm listening to Anna Karenina on audio. 33 hours. I just hope my 3 week book hold is long enough to finish! 8y

I'm halfway through the Big Green Tent. Rereading I'll Give You the Sun for my teen book club. And I've started Moonglow. I figure the Laini Taylor will go fast. So this is my realistic TBR. But I don't often stick to these lists.

So many mixed feelings! Even if I'm loving this, it's taking some serious effort for me to stay interested. Considered DNFing it, but I just can't! It's the first time a book makes me feel like this 🤔

#TBRtemptation post! Wow, I want this!!! (Also works for the translation category for challenges.) A sweeping Russian epic that carries the torch of Dostoyevsky & Tolstoy. A poet, a pianist, & a photographer--school friends in 1950s USSR--struggle with their artistic ambitions in a society where their heroes are censored & exiled. Love & intrigue mix with dissidents & spies. Paranoia, division, & betrayal foment always. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

My haphazard character list has grown to two pages at about 1/3 of the way through. I've really enjoyed settling into this big Russian novel, and look forward to the rest of the journey.

A lot of thought and planning goes into each episode we create. I (Autumn), for example, read this 700+ page book for our newest episode. Give it a listen and then let us know what #booksintranslation you love. #thereadingwomen

LauraBrook I've been trying to recall the name of this book for a freakin year! THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this! All I could remember about the cover was it was white and green and "Russian-y", which is not so helpful. ??? 8y

It‘s finished!!! I loved this book so hard. I just felt so immersed in what the characters were doing and like I was getting a crash course in Russian history. Also, I love books about the intertwining threads of humanity. All of the dozens of characters are intertwined in one way or another...most of them do not even know that they are connected. It's a beautiful, crazy story about life, the choices we make, and so much more. #booksintranslation

DreesReads I must read this. It has been on my radar, but with the dozens of characters and intertwining threads--that sounds like my kind of book! 8y
shawnmooney I'd wanted to read this for quite a while, but not as much as I do now, having been so stimulated by your review! 8y

I've not been reading as many books lately because I'm still working through this enormous masterpiece. I'm finally at 60%--only 200 pages to go! It's beautiful and decadent like a dessert at a fancy restaurant.

Hobbinol This book sounds amazing. For the past 2 years I've had to keep expanding my TBR shelf and now since I've been on Litsy, I've learned about so many amazing books I don't know where to turn! I've got to read this book though. I just don't know when. Thanks! 8y

Magslhalliday @Hobbinol my Litsy TBR is becoming epic, in a good way. 8y
autumnprivett @Hobbinol You're welcome! Litsy has done the same to my TBR list and I'm glad. 8y
autumnprivett @BookishTrish I've seen it at bookstores, but I've not seen many reviews....maybe because it's 500+ pages?? 😂 8y
autumnprivett @Cinfhen It's not heavy in a depressing/dark way. It is long and the plot is dense, but it's a surprisingly easy read. Perhaps because it is a modern work and translation? 8y
Cinfhen I'm interested to hear your end thoughts after book is finished! I LOVE chunky reads but sometimes it takes a lot of will power to stay with them 8y

Notafraidofwords I heard it's a hard book if you cannot follow along with the history. 8y
autumnprivett @Tav Thanks! 8y
autumnprivett @Notafraidofwords So far that hasn't been a problem. I know next to nothing about Russian history and am tracking quite well. That being said, I'm sure if I knew more about Russian history that I would pick up on/ appreciate the nuances of the plot better. 8y
Notafraidofwords @autumnprivett that's good to know since my library has this one. Will check it out ! 8y

This one was a slow, slow start. But oh my goodness the richness of this Russian prose. 😍

Procrastireader This is actually a very perceptive, acute description of photographers. Come to think of it, it may describe 90% of people with cell phones. Although, sadly, using a couple of filters completely lacks the tactile and technical joy of film photography. 🎞 8y
