Romanovs: The Final Chapter
Romanovs: The Final Chapter | Robert K Massie
18 posts | 9 read | 28 to read
In July 1991, nine skeletons were exhumed from a shallow mass grave near Ekaterinburg, Siberia, a few miles from the infamous cellar room where the last tsar and his family had been murdered seventy-three years before. But were these the bones of the Romanovs? And if these were their remains, where were the bones of the two younger Romanovs supposedly murdered with the rest of the family? Was Anna Anderson, celebrated for more than sixty years in newspapers, books, and film, really Grand Duchess Anastasia? "The Romanovs" provides the answers, describing in suspenseful detail the dramatic efforts to discover the truth. Pulitzer Prize winner Robert K. Massie presents a colorful panorama of contemporary characters, illuminating the major scientific dispute between Russian experts and a team of Americans, whose findings, along with those of DNA scientists from Russia, America, and Great Britain, all contributed to solving one of the great mysteries of the twentieth century.

Finally adding my latest nonfiction read to the #nonfiction2019 grid. A long way to go, but I‘ve got plans!

Pickpick

This book was not what I anticipated: a thorough story of their last days & execution. Instead it was about their bones: half the book-finding them, analyzing them, dna tests, the fights over them. Most of the 2nd half was about whether there was an imposter survivor. Finally, an extraordinarily detailed genealogy of the post-execution surviving Romanovs. No detail is left unsaid: it was well-researched, dry, and tedious, but not so dry to bail.

GingerAntics This is on my TBR. That‘s not what I thought it was either, though it does sound sort of interesting still. 6y
OrangeMooseReads This one is on my list as well. Massie really researches and knows his Romonav stuff. Crappy it isn‘t quite what it looks like it would be. 6y

Their world really did fall around them 😳. I had a Romanov obsession in the 90s and read a bunch of these. This one was great because Massie was one of the first people to have full access to the Russian records post the find of the grave in 1991. This is the story of the historians and forensic experts working out what happened and resolving the various Anastasia theories.

Lynnsoprano I remember reading Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra and enjoying it. To the TBR this goes. 7y
Cinfhen Such a fascinating time in history 7y
Centique @Lynnsoprano ooh I'm going to need to read that one too! 7y

I was tagged by @RestlessFickleBookSlut for my #fivestarpredictions I know I'm slow at getting around to it, but here they are. Based on previous reads (Nikki Giovanni and Kurt Vonnegut), subject matter (Romanovs and RBG), and others with similar reading tastes giving high reviews (Whatever Happened...). The Romanov book can also fall under previous reads as well, Massie does a lot of research and well.

This one has been on my TBR list for a while now. 🇷🇺 #BackInTheUSSR #RockinMay @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Sounds like my kind of read...as long as it reads like fiction and not textbook! Hope you get to it soon @GypsyKat and report back to me...I need to know 😉😜😉 8y
GypsyKat @Cinfhen I'm trying not to buy stuff of my TBR list until after the secret santa swap, but it's actually on sale on Amazon, so it's really tempting! 😆 8y

This is my most #recentnonfictionread. It was a little more technical than I expected it to be, but still so, so interesting. Ever since I read Gloria Whelan's Russian Quartet, I'm a sucker for anything about the Romanovs. #marchintoreading #russianhistory #romanovs

About ten years ago I went through a period where I was obsessed with the Romanovs. They are fascinating to me. The tragic turn their lives took. Alexei's illness. Alexandra's coldness. Did Anastasia survive? #royal #readjanuary

AnnieReads Have you read The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander? It's a fictional account of the Romanovs and a fantastic read. 8y
Reviewsbylola I have! I'm not sure where my copy disappeared to! @AnnieReads 8y
Kat_Reads Have you read the Romanov prophecy by Steve Berry? It's a really good reimagining of their story! 8y

Mdargusch Nicolas and Alexandra was my favorite book but I agree @Kat_Reads, the Kitchen Boy is a great version of the Romanovs' story. 8y
ValerieAndBooks I used to have more books on the Romanovs than I do now -- I over-culled during one of our moves, I guess 🙁. But because there's been new info such as the bodies being discovered and confirmed to be Nicholas and his family, I have an excuse to pick up some newer ones now 😊! 8y
Reviewsbylola Oh I know! I was so glad they confirmed the bodies. I was so invested in the idea that one or more of them may have survived. The Anna Anderson story especially intrigued me. @ValerieAndBooks 8y
drbethandherkindle I still love the Romanovs! Did you watch the documentary about their dynasty on Netflix?? 8y
Reviewsbylola No, I didn't know there was such a thing. I am so bad about watching TV because my kids hog it. 😂 @drbethandherkindle 8y
drbethandherkindle It's called Empire of the Tsars and I highly recommend it! And only 3 hours…you can do it! 8y
Reviewsbylola I will definitely check that out. Thank you! @drbethandherkindle 8y
