A Man of Some Repute
A Man of Some Repute | Elizabeth Edmondson

Truth is rarely pure and never simple Selchester Castle in 1953 sits quiet and near-empty, its corridors echoing with glories of the past. Or so it seems to intelligence officer Hugo Hawksworth, wounded on a secret mission and now reluctantly assuming an altogether less perilous role at Selchester. The Castle's faded grandeur hides a web of secrets and scandalsthe Earl has been missing for seven years, lost without a trace since the night he left his guests and walked out into a blizzard. When a skeleton is uncovered beneath the flagstones of the Old Chapel, the police produce a suspect and declare the case closed. Hugo is not convinced. With the help of the spirited Freya Wryton, the Earl's niece, he is drawn back into active service, and the ancient town of Selchester is dragged into the intrigues and conspiracies of the Cold War era. With a touch of Downton Abbey, a whisper of Agatha Christie and a nod to Le Carr,A Man of Some Repute is the first book in this delightfully classic and witty murder mystery series.

I... have to actually do stuff. Stuff that isn't reading. Unscheduled life interference in my #24in48. 😒
But it's stuff I can do with headphones. So I picked the first KU cozy mystery I could find that comes with audio included.

5⭐️for me. Edmondson hints at deeper mysteries with her lead characters, lays the foundation for future mysteries spurring off of the current one involving the death of an Earl who had enemies, and injects just the right amount of humor. Hugo's sister, Georgia, is reminiscent of Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce in her wit and precociousness. This just felt like a classic murder mystery that could be termed "cozy"..maybe. I'm hesitant with that label.

robinb Just picked this up myself....TBR. 7y
Jess_Read_This @robinb I can't wait to hear your thoughts! I just bought book 2 and book 3... exactly playing into Amazon's marketing hands... 🤦🏽‍♀️ 7y
robinb @Jess_Read_This yep, that‘s me too...I‘m a sucker for those on-sale emails. *sigh* 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄 I purchased the first two but pretty sure number three will follow shortly. 😂 7y
Jess_Read_This @robinb I am just crushed to learn this author passed away in Jan 2016. I saw another co-author's name on Book 3. And then learned it is written by her son based on his mother's notes. She passed away from a short battle with cancer at age 67. 😢 (edited) 7y
robinb @Jess_Read_This oh how sad!!! I noticed the co-author on the third one but didn‘t investigate further. 😔😔😔 7y

Amazon Suggestions got to me. The sneaky devils had to show me this cover, title, and blurb it as a touch of Downton Abbey, whisper of Agatha Christie, and a bit of Le Care.

An early Cold War era novel involving a wounded intelligence officer and the discovery of a skeleton beneath a church flagstone.

✔️Roadtrip Essentials- cozy scarf, mystery book, and an eyebrow raising Santa Twix pack... before Halloween. 🎃

DGRachel 🤔 This sounds like something I would love. Will be watching for your review! 7y

Overall good English mystery. Do think how the murderer was confirmed was a bit silly. Liked the setting and the characters. Lots of tea, scones, and whisky. Will read the sequel.

When you figure out the person standing beside you is the murderer, best not to tell him. Especially if you are alone, in the mist, down by the river. 😮
