On Tyranny
On Tyranny: Corrected and Expanded Edition, Including the Strauss-Kojve Correspondence | Leo Strauss
5 posts | 1 read
On Tyranny is Leo Strausss classic reading of Xenophons dialogue Hiero, or Tyrannicus, in which the tyrant Hiero and the poet Simonides discuss the advantages and disadvantages of exercising tyranny. Included are a translation of the dialogue from its original Greek, a critique of Strausss commentary by the French philosopher Alexandre Kojve, and the complete correspondence between the two. This revised and expanded edition introduces important corrections throughout and expands Strausss restatement of his position in light of Kojves commentary to bring it into conformity with the text as it was originally published in France.

We do not care that you do not like to be called fascists. We say: if the shoe fits…

We do not care that you laugh and scoff when we say: not my President. Oh yes he is, you say. What leader of any country actively hates a segment of the population simply for criticizing him? Didn‘t you say he‘s our President too? As in, President of the WHOLE country? Why isn‘t he acting like it?

No we are not shielding you by using a tag you can mute.

lil1inblue Trust when I say I'm being kind by using the word fascist. The other options are...not as nice. 😏 6d

Seems appropriate to be reading On Tyranny whilst sipping from a campaign slogans mug.

Read in July.

4 physical books
4 e-books
3 audiobooks

Pruzy You're a reading machine! 8y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Pruzy The audiobooks really help. 😂 8y
Pruzy @Ashley_Nicoletto Still only a 3:8 ratio of audiobooks to other books. So far I'm averaging only 2 books a month...any tips for reading more words (besides audiobooks that is) 8y

Ashley_Nicoletto @Pruzy I just make sure to always take a book with me places. I read almost any time I have down time. Like in line at the grocery store etc. it's kind of ridiculous actually lol. But I'm kind of a slow reader and I wouldn't read nearly as much if I didn't. 8y
Pruzy @Ashley_Nicoletto Haha, I've got to go to slower grocery stores. Can't remember the last time I've had to stand in a line that was longer than 5 minutes. 8y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Pruzy Oh man. Grocery shopping around here on a weekend is insane. So many people. Never enough check out lines. 8y
Pruzy @Ashley_Nicoletto When I moved to a city with 24 hour grocery stores my mind was blown 🙌 8y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Pruzy We have 24 hour ones, buttttt we only really have one major chain besides Walmart for groceries. I try to go Friday nights to avoid the lines late. 8y
Pruzy @Ashley_Nicoletto Yeah, evenings Friday + Weekends are usually pretty quiet 8y
