Cheerfulness Breaks In | Angela Thirkell
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
A portrait of middle-class England raising a wartime spirit. England is on the brink of war, but the people of rural Barsetshire are not downhearted. As the village rallies round to supply huge numbers of evacuated cockney children with rabbit stew, the locals are seen in their true colours.

💸😍When the preorders start trickling in... one more should be showing up shortly. It‘s truly been a summer of Thirkell in my reading and escapes into Barsetshire.

Sparklemn Just purchased the first in the series! 4y
Jess_Read_This @Sparklemn Yay!! Which was one is that? I probably haven‘t been reading them in order 🙈 4y

Sparklemn @Jess_Read_This It's called High Rising. I'm a bit nutty about reading series in order. 🙃 4y
LeahBergen I received posted with an old edition of the tagged book. I love Thirkell! ❤️ 4y
Jess_Read_This @Sparklemn I‘ve got that one and Christmas at High Rising. I need to read them still. I didn‘t realize they had an order and so far haven‘t noticed too many details out of order. But I usually try to read in order too. 😬 4y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen Oh! How lovely! I started with the VMC series and feel I need to complete it. But you can‘t beat the vintage editions with dust jackets and gorgeous cover art! 4y
Cathythoughts Lovely! I got The Brandons after your recent post 😁🙏🙏🙏 4y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts oh! That makes me happy to hear! Have you read it yet? 4y
CarolynM ❤️ 4y
catebutler I have these on my wish list! Thirkell is such a wonderful author!! 4y
Jess_Read_This @catebutler I found her to be such a comforting read this summer. It was just what I needed to read about children being children, a bit of village gossip and drama, plays being performed, young love, and a couple or two getting engaged in the end. 4y

Day 16 of #20Series20Days and I‘m going with Angela Thirkell‘s Barsetshire Chronicles.

Thirkell took the setting of Anthony Trollope‘s fictional county of Barsetshire and brought it into the “modern” era with her novels. The 29-volume series covers the 1930s to the 1950s and manages to be both cozy AND satirically biting.

I only own 20, so far. 😆

MsMelissa Excellent! I‘m going to read it very soon 😊 4y
Ruthiella I read Love Among the Ruins a few years ago and realized I need to read this series in order... on my list! 4y
batsy I think you know what's coming, but... the covers! 😆😍🏵️ 4y
rubyslippersreads I ❤️ the Thirkells I‘ve read so far. These are gorgeous! 😍 4y
CarolynM What fabulous covers! I think I'm going to include this series too, but I don't own many of them. 4y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella I‘ve read the first 3 or 4 (in order) and I‘m just getting to the point where characters in previous novels are casually mentioned. 😊 4y
LeahBergen @batsy 😆😆 4y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I need MORE. 😆😆 4y
LeahBergen @CarolynM I own quite a few of the pretty Virago paperbacks. I‘ve just bought the series randomly over the last few years as I find them ... as you have to do with old series! 😄 4y

Planning what I might read (from my shelves) for Ann Bogel‘s 2019 Reading Challenge. Not much to chose from for the “books published before you were born” category. Only two choices: the tagged book and a Nancy Mitford, from almost 300 books on my shelves! #2019readingchallenge

LauraBeth I still haven‘t read The Bell Jar so I was planning on reading that one for this prompt. Also - she‘s mentioned this book before and I don‘t know why I‘m drawn to it (Nuns - really??) but I‘m drawn to it because she spoke so highly about it. It was published during the 60s. 5y
LeslieO @LauraBeth I read In This House of Brede (I love Rumer Godden!) a long time ago and remember loving it. But it wouldn‘t count for me cuz I‘m so old! 5y
Zelma @LauraBeth in This House of Brede is really good! A quiet book yet enough interest and drama to keep you wanting to know more. And the characters! ❤️ 5y

My reading today.

Some of the class conflict comedy feels a little dated, but it's still making me smile.
