Letters from Yellowstone
Letters from Yellowstone | Diane Smith
10 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
In the spring of 1898, A. E. (Alexandria) Bartram--a spirited young woman with a love for botany--is invited to join a field study in Yellowstone National Park. The study's leader, a mild-mannered professor from Montana, assumes she is a man, and is less than pleased to discover the truth. Once the scientists overcome the shock of having a woman on their team, they forge ahead on a summer of adventure, forming an enlightening web of relationships as they move from Mammoth Hot Springs to a camp high in the backcountry. But as they make their way collecting amid Yellowstone's beauty the group is splintered by differing views on science, nature, and economics. In the tradition of A. S. Byatt's Angels and Insects and Andrea Barrett's Ship Fever, this delightful novel captures an ever-fascinating era and one woman's attempt to take charge of her life.

This was definitely a case of the right book at the right time. With so much holiday craziness I only had time to read in little sips, which turned out to be the perfect way to read this story.
In 1898 Alex joins a field study in Yellowstone National Park and shocks the other scientists by being a woman 😱 The story touches on conservation, Native American displacement, feminism, and the nature of science.

I‘m on vacation, on my way to visit the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, so we‘re doing some topical questions today! 🏔

1. I love epistolary novels, and I love Yellowstone, so this has been on my TBR for a while!
2. Denali National Park and Preserve. I‘ve never been to Alaska!
3. Stacking The Hour of the Land by Terry Tempest Williams.

#SundayFunday Have a great day and remember to tag me so I can see your responses!

sarahbellum Ooo have fun on your trip! I have a goal to visit all of the US National Parks and have been to 38 so far. Haven‘t been to Theodore Roosevelt or Yellowstone yet! Also haven‘t made it to Alaska yet 3y
BookmarkTavern @sarahbellum My youngest sister has the same goal! Yellowstone is wonderful when you get there! ❤️ Thanks for sharing! 3y

The epistolary formatting actually aided the atmosphere of this historical novel by setting the pace. I did feel the ending could have been more fleshed out. It did surprise me at times with the subtle but kind humor.

An enjoyable unexpected find in a quaint used bookstore in rural MT. Not a gripping storyline, but offers a window onto the history & beauty of the Park, as well as a discussion about the nature of science (pun intended). The gender/feminism issue was a little heavy handed, though I get Smith was capturing the era.

Spent a week unplugged in the Big Horns. I didn't get a lot of reading done because we were with family & friends, but the natural refreshment does a 💜 good.

I picked this one up last summer in West Yellowstone. It tells the story of an exploring expedition to Yellowstone National Park by a team of botanists and other naturalists in the late 1800s. A bit slow moving at times but, overall, fairly entertaining. And I do so love an epistolary novel!
