Saving Capitalism
Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few | Robert B. Reich
12 posts | 16 read | 12 to read
From the author of Aftershock and The Work of Nations, his most important book to datea myth-shattering breakdown of how the economic system that helped make America so strong is now failing us, and what it will take to fix it. Perhaps no one is better acquainted with the intersection of economics and politics than Robert B. Reich, and now he reveals how power and influence have created a new American oligarchy, a shrinking middle class, and the greatest income inequality and wealth disparity in eighty years. He makes clear how centrally problematic our veneration of the free market is, and how it has masked the power of moneyed interests to tilt the market to their benefit. Reich exposes the falsehoods that have been bolstered by the corruption of our democracy by huge corporations and the revolving door between Washington and Wall Street: that all workers are paid what theyre worth, that a higher minimum wage equals fewer jobs, and that corporations must serve shareholders before employees. He shows that the critical choices ahead are not about the size of government but about who government is for: that we must choose not between a free market and big government but between a market organized for broadly based prosperity and one designed to deliver the most gains to the top. Ever the pragmatist, ever the optimist, Reich sees hope for reversing our slide toward inequality and diminished opportunity when we shore up the countervailing power of everyone else. Passionate yet practical, sweeping yet exactingly argued, Saving Capitalism is a revelatory indictment of our economic status quo and an empowering call to civic action. From the Hardcover edition.

In a time of extreme and scary partisanship, this book begins with a great concept: that the “free market” versus “government control” level debates are a myth and and a distraction to what is actually happening - that the richest people and corporations are changing the rules to benefit themselves. Any book that talks about economic policy and proposals while barely using the words “republican” or “democrat” is much needed.

sarahlandis Sounds so interesting- definitely want to add it to my list! 3y

“I owe you an apology. I read a lot of non fiction. Like a lot... So I went with the shortest, most accessible storm of shit on my shelf... I‘ll try to go light on the depressing nonfiction in the future ;)” said the friend who gifted me this in a book swap.

I took no pleasure from it, but I finished it. Basically corporations in every field of industry have used their $ to gain political power to bend the laws to make more $. The end.

Leftcoastzen He‘s a bit of a gloomy Gus but he has a point , wish he was a more engaging writer! 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Leftcoastzen Very well put! I feel silly wishing he had jazzed up the dire economic straits, but I could never think of it as more than a beneficial slog. 6y

GingerAntics Yeah, not really a surprise ending. God why did that take a whole book? Look, you just did it in a (short) paragraph. 6y

A suggestion for revising the section titles:

Part 1: Everything is Awful

Part 2: Oh Man, It‘s Way Worse Than You Thought Even Though You Already Thought It Was Really Bad

Part 3: Possible Solutions That Seem Ludicrously Out of Reach

Also maybe just call the book Before the Hunger Games.

GingerAntics I‘m not sure if I should laugh or cry, but I do like the new title selection. 6y

I promised myself that I would read this gift from a friend (let‘s ignore the fact that I received it a little less than a year ago) despite its obvious lack of wizards and/or starships.

I‘m looking at it like a sugar-free protein bar - it‘s probably useful although not a single moment of enjoyment will be had.

Trying to power through it quickly. So far the theme is: Everything is awful.

Lcsmcat Maybe this is one you _should_ watch on Netflix first. 🤭 (Did I say that out loud?) 6y

GingerAntics That book sounds depressing, even for the many. 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @GingerAntics A little less than half way through and so far there has been very little indication that anything is salvageable. 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Lcsmcat The thought had definitely crossed my mind... 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @2BR02B That emoji should be the front cover blurb. 6y
GingerAntics That‘s exactly what I feared. Maybe it has a surprise ending? (Probably not, but you know.) Maybe it really does have a space ship at the end! 🚀 6y

kristinshafel plus Mo' Meta Blues by Questlove!! It was in a different room ☺️ 7y
Mcoun I highly recommend The New Jim Crow. 7y
kristinshafel @Mcoun I feel like ALL of these are going to be eye-opening experiences. I wish I could read them all simultaneously!! 7y

Listening to the first half or so of this book as Reich analyzes various problems with our current economic system almost had me bursting arteries. Luckily, he narrates his own book and his voice is incredibly soothing and even-tempered. Plus the last chapters are full of common sense solutions. It's just sad that we don't have these solutions in place and that putting them into effect will be quite the fight. Image from Reich's website.

My #BestOfOctober includes two nonfiction books, which I'm pretty happy about. My reading has been slow for several months with just a few fiction reads. Joining Litsy and meeting all you Littens and your shelves has certainly inspired me to get creative with how I spend my free time and get more reading done.

I loved his documentary Inequality for All, so I'm giving this bad boy a try. So far I find Reich's voice quite soothing.

First things first #keepjournalismalive #johnoliver. The more I read newspapers stories or report myself (full disclosure, I am a reporter) the more I realize how news and features can be as addictive as fiction.
