Absolutely hilarious collection of short science fiction. Not much plotwise, more satiric vibes. The gossip of intelligent machines was a high point.

When the yogurt took over, we all made the same jokes--“Finally our rulers have culture,“ “Our society has curdled,“ “Our government is now the cream of the crop,“ and so on. But when we weren't laughing about the absurdity of it all, we looked into each others' eyes with the same unasked question--how did we ever get to the point where we were, in fact. ruled by a dairy product?
A collection of 17 miniature SF stories, some previously published & some new to print. A typical Scalzi work—humorous & absurd. As Scalzi says: I like the idea of humans dealing with aliens not on a first contact level but on a 2,344,756th level. That is, when it‘s not anything new anymore.
Some I enjoyed more than others, but an overall fun collection. I listened to the audiobook, which has multiple narrators with Scalzi introducing each story.
I‘m not big on short stories - some of them I love (Harrison Bergeron by Vonnegut is my favorite), but Scalzi is one of my favorite authors so I thought I‘d give this a listen on my way to becoming a Scalzi completist. Some of the stories are quite good and some just so-so. If you like Scalzi, it‘s definitely a pick. I think what I enjoyed most is hearing him introduce each story. His voice was unexpected, but nice. Overall 4.0⭐️ #2019 🚀 🎧
I found a nice park bench for some afternoon reading 📖🌳🌤
My library's copy of Miniatures by John Scalzi was signed by the author! So cool!
Here's a better picture of my TBR for today's Dewey's 24-Hour #Readathon . . .
Upper left: my reading buddy - slightly sleepy as it's the middle of the night - with the two print books I hope to read.
Upper right: two audiobooks I plan to listen to, including Miniatures by John Scalzi, which I will actually start with...in 84 minutes! It will make a great "read" while doing opening questions.
Bottom: All library books I have to choose from. :-)
Perfect for sci-fi and humor fans, these very short stories are smart and dryly hilarious! More concerned with the 2,634,895th encounter than 1st encounters, Scalzi has pieces on recognizing alien holidays in the workplace and appropriate pronouns for 7-gendered species. The paired pieces on the superhero booker & supervillain risk assessment agent were my faves. Also, your smart appliances are hard core judging you. 😂🤖👽
