My Story | Marilyn Monroe, Ben Hecht
11 posts | 15 read | 17 to read
Written at the height of her fame, but not published until over a decade after her death, this autobiography of actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) poignantly recounts her childhood as an unwanted orphan, her early adolescence, her rise in the film industry from bit player to celebrity, her marriage to Joe DiMaggio, and more. The Marilyn in these pages is a revelation: a gifted, intelligent, vulnerable woman who was far more complex than the unwitting sex siren she portrayed on screen. Lavishly illustrated with photos of Marilyn taken by renowned photographer Milton H. Greene, this special book celebrates the life and career of an American icon- from the unique perspective of the icon herself. -- Publisher description.

This book was haunting to read. Whilst is not a new release it was new to me and this #chunkster enthralled me. What makes this book about this woman different from others it's her own narrative. Truly recommend this one if you're looking to read a nonfiction title. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

First published about a decade after her death, this felt like I was reading Marilyn Monroes's personal diary. In it she recounts her early childhood, her views on men and women, the industry and it's inability to take her seriously as an actress, her one-sided "feud" with Joan Crawford (my favorite part), her marriage to Joe DiMaggio and abruptly ends around the time she married Arthur Miller.

Feels like Marilyn is telling you her story in person.
I always come back to this book. Seeing Hollywood and Marilyn through her eyes.

Monroe tells her story in her own words, providing intimate vignettes of her off-screen life, exposes her insecurities and negative self-perception. #Allthepeopleintheworld (well, at least the people in show business) seem to want a piece of her. ‘Lonely but vivacious, intelligent but confused—this is who Marilyn saw when she looked in the mirror.‘

Smangela This was a lovely memoir - so tragic. I recommend the lifetime mini series about Marilyn Monroe too. I felt like the actress did an UNCANNY job portraying her. 6y

#AmericanBeauty #Characters2017

I read this after seeing countless of Marilyn's movies. Then I watched an amazing biopic from Lifetime called The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe starring the best cast Marilyn EVER, Kelli Garner. My heart aches for Marilyn ❤️

LectricSheep Have you read Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates? It's a novelization of Monroe's life. I cried. Very much. 😶 8y
Smangela @LectricSheep I haven't! And I didn't know that! I need to get my hands on that. I was browsing some Marilyn quotes online for this prompt and it just broke my heart. People write her off as one of the characters she played but she was a smart, compassionate woman who went through a lot! 8y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks ❤️ Marilyn... I have a few books about her life too... so sad, the mental issues and things from her childhood she had to deal with... 😪😪 8y

A few of many photos of Marilyn reading.
She had over 500 books in her personal library.
