I Am the Only Running Footman
I Am the Only Running Footman | Martha Grimes
4 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
In a rainy ditch in a Devon wood, a hitchhiker is found dead. Almost a year later, on another rainy night, another murder; this time, however, the victim is found just outside a pub called I Am the Only Running Footman, near Berkeley Square in Londons fashionable Mayfair District. Devon policeman Brian Macalvie is convinced that the two murders are connected. And thus, in his eighth case, Richard Jury is drawn into the so-called Porphyria killings. A particularly elusive pair of murders. From the streets of London to the village of Somers Abbas, Jury and Macalvie are joined by the stolid if hypochondriac Sergeant Wiggins and the reluctant Melrose Plant. They meet in another pub, the Mortal Man, and, amidst the clatter and cry of the Warboys family, they ponder a labyrinthine set of clues.

I love Richard and Melrose. I also love how Richard tends to pay attention to the kids involved and cares so much for everyone.

I think I‘m giving up on this series. Such a shame because the first 5 were so good, but this is the third ho-hum one in a row, and looking at GR, seems like the further ones continue in the same vein. The characters are still great but the plots are dealt with in a half-hearted way IMO - the bones of a great mystery are still here, but it doesn‘t get fleshed out. Sigh.

TrishB Three in a row is definitely time to give up 👍🏻 5y
Reggie That‘s heartbreaking when series do that. Especially when you‘re five books invested. 5y

This is more like it! Chowder, lager, outdoor dining, and a procedural mystery set in an English pub. Knucklehead that I am, I joined another mystery #bookclub that meets at my favorite secondhand bookstore. So far it reminds me of one of those Britain mysteries they like to run on PBS. #24B4Monday

erzascarletbookgasm I miss the Richard Jury mysteries. Read a few in the series, liked them. 6y
Centique @erzascarletbookgasm this is one of my go to “feel good” series lately - I‘m only on book 4 but I‘ve been collecting later ones via Abebooks. 😊 6y
