Inspector Amaia Salazar returns to her home town, having been put in charge of the search for a serial killer. She also has to contend with PTSD from growing up with an abusive mother and spooky goings-on in the forest with creatures from Basque legend.

Enjoyable background in Tarot mysticism and the basajaun and uncertainty as to whether they were real or just part of the characters' belief system. Looking forward to vol. 2 of the trilogy.

Last night I went to a Spanish restaurant, and had meatballs, patatas bravas, and croquetas chorizo. While I was there and reading my book, look what they were eating. 😄

Ruthiella What a coincidence! 😃 2y
rwmg @Ruthiella Not my best reading coincidence but still pretty impressive. The best one was when a character in one book was reading the other book I was reading at that time 2y

'If I'd seen a single sign of any cockiness I wouldn't have left her, and in fact I did hesitate, but she assured me she'd be fine and she'd be home in time for dinner."

Amaia looked at her watch. In Aunt Engrasi's house they ate supper at around eleven.

?? Culture shock. I'd have eaten my arm off by that point.

Soubhiville Wow, me too. Also you‘d have to wake me up, that‘s past my bed time 😂 2y

This Waterstones system of ‘Buy one get one half price‘ is killing me. I always think it‘s a bargain but then I end up with three and so have to buy a fourth 😀! The tagged one was recommended by the shop keeper so I made that the fourth one even though I had never heard of it.

ephemeralwaltz Nice! I have the Redondo sitting on my shelf. 6y
RidgewayGirl The Refugees is fantastic. I‘m reading the Sullivan book now and I‘m loving it. Excellent choices! 6y
BarbaraBB @RidgewayGirl Thanks, that is good to know. I bought them on a bit of a whim! 6y

I got this book today.. I also looked for the Litsy reviews & found a Waterstones review, it‘s Waterstones book of the month. which is fine. It‘s just the first change I‘ve seen sinse LT took over. People keep mentioning seeing changes ... but this is the first one I‘ve seen ... It‘s interesting... all good. Just noting the first change I see to Littens. 👍🏻❤️

TrishB I wondered what you meant - but just had a look too.....will be worried if they become adverts! As it is now you still have to follow. 6y
Cathythoughts @TrishB yes, will be interesting to see how it develops... 6y

Our Thriller of the Month is the incredible, sinister Spanish mystery The Invisible Guardian. Shortlisted for the CWA International Dagger, this novel has so much lurking in the shadows that you won't be able to stop reading until it has all been brought out into the light.

I enjoyed this one overall - I like the way it was tied to Basque mythology, which led me down an Internet rabbit hole. The story was really dark. Some of the backstory was overdone and distracting, and I figured out who did it pretty quickly, but I would still read (listen to) the others in the series.

I‘m behind on my photo challenges (as usual) so I‘m playing catch-up over the course of the day. I started this one on audio last night, and it sounds like it has particularly creepy #Criminals. Fingers crossed! #noteworthynovember @Jess7

Borrowed this book in Spanish and English to practise my Spanish. So far it's gritty and very creepy!

Anna40 It's fairly well written and I liked the eerie atmosphere but the ending was so bad that it spoilt the rest of the book... 7y

Set in Basque Country. A psychological thriller w/ ritualistic, superstitious, and mythological elements. First in a trilogy originally published in Spain.
