13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi
13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi | Mitchell Zuckoff with the Annex Security Team
20 posts | 35 read | 19 to read
NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTUREThe harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi.13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack. 13 HOURS sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by "New York Times" bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country. 13 HOURS is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book--but most importantly, it is the truth. The story of what happened to these men--and what they accomplished--is unforgettable.

Soooo good. I‘m going to watch the movie. One of my students told me this was his favorite book. I had to check it out. I love books about true events.

#2020Book15
I remember seeing all of the news coverage after the September 11, 2012 attacks in Benghazi. But after reading this book, I am appalled by how much was left out because it didn't fit the narrative the news anchors were trying to push. If you have strong opinions on either political party's handling of the events in Benghazi, then I highly recommend reading this book before you make your next Facebook post about it.

This was an intense account of what happened in Benghazi on 9/11/12. The book is read by the author. It‘s not about the politics of the event but about what actually happened during the attack and the Americans who were involved. I‘m planning to watch the movie this weekend 😬

Learning a lot about Libyan-US relations in the beginning of this week's audiobook. First day back at work, driving slowly because there are still large patches of ice in "balmy" SC. We can handle 100 degrees. We don't do freezing well, though.?️☀️

Cinfhen Drive safe 7y
ptkpepe98 @Cinfhen - Thanks! I saw "the" snow plow as I headed in, temp was 27. By the time I left work, all that snow was finally gone because it got up to 57! I'm heading to bed now, and it's a "dance nekkid in the woods" 39! 7y

I read this book early last year, sure that Benghazi was going to be a HUGE talking point/debate in the election year and I wanted the insider story first. I learned a lot & I‘m still not sure how they laid this CIA mess on the Secretary of State, but in the end it didn‘t matter....people died that didn‘t need to, most of it was plain human error, and none of it was a focus of the campaigns in the end.

My #NovemberByTheNumbers pick for Nov 13th

jpmcwisemorgan It was and wasn‘t a focus of the campaigns. It still gets thrown about as soon as HRC‘s name is mentioned. It‘s something I know a little about and wouldn‘t mind be more informed on. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @jpmcwisemorgan before the election I picked a bunch of books to read so I‘d be a better informed voter throughout, and would know some facts before debates and crazy commercial season. I read some about climate change, about ISIS, and a ton of other things I was sure would be topics where the candidates would have different opinions and policies, and I wanted to have some knowledge beforehand, facts from other sources on board before. Once... 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @jpmcwisemorgan ..HRC was running I knew this topic would be front and center, the other side had been whipping it up into a scandal for awhile....so I added some Benghazi books too. Little did I realize how quickly that election season would spiral out from issues into emails, name calling, Putin, and wall building. In retrospect, I picked all the wrong books, the debates covered Benghazi,Climate, our current wars, foreign & domestic policy, 7y
See All 20 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...etc at such a small percentage of time compared to other topics. But anyway, it‘s a good read, from one of the guys on the ground. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @jpmcwisemorgan If I was doing it again, I‘d have read about Putin, email servers, Colin Powell years as Sect of State, immigration policy, etc. But as they say, hindsight is 20/20. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan Some of the major points that came up I was already familiar with - my educational background is in environmental policy and I have an emphasis in demography on my MA. Putin wasn‘t really on my radar, should have paid more attention to him. Ive been paying a lot more attention now, that‘s for sure. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan It helps that I‘ve lived almost 20 years in California, New Mexico and now Texas where immigration comes up regularly. I think I‘ve been too focused on state level “stuff” too much. More balance is needed! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @jpmcwisemorgan Sounds like we‘re on similar journeys...I‘ve definitely been making an effort to read more about topics that are important nationally and internationally. I added more Putin, European Politics, Immigration, Racism, and HealthCare reads into my non-fiction reading this year, and into my TBR list. I had felt fairly informed about healthcare, immigration, and racism before the election, but the election and it‘s aftermath showed me 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...I needed to read so much more. But for the election, I thought for sure they‘re be more nuisanced discussions about Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, and I felt weak and a bit out of date in those areas, so I read a bit there last year. I never expected the discussions to devolve into ‘I know more than the generals, believe me‘. That‘s not even a point that you can say his policy idea was good or bad or agree or not, there not much discussion there 7y
Gezemice Issues? What were you thinking???😲 My husband knew one of the victims through the Internet. The sysadmin. They played Eve Online together and often chatted online. He remembers that he mentioned they asked for more money for security but Congress denied it. He was afraid 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yea Congress was another party that got none of the blame, but sure blamed a lot of other people. This book focuses on the CIA and independent contractors that were supposed to be back-up for the ambassador in case of emergency, probably why they felt they didn‘t need to fund more security, but when the time came they were held back by their superiors because technically they weren‘t there. That and a lot of reliance on local militias 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...that just weren‘t that well organized or reliable. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I did not know that. It just seems ludicrous to me that security is handled by independent contractors. If there is something that has to be in-house, it is security. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice I agree, the US seems to be doing a lot more with independent contracts....usually they are ex-military men who sign back up for bigger money (like Blackwater) which has its own pitfalls, but also they rely a lot on the security forces in the country they are in, so in France, you‘d expect the French police to control French crowds outside the US embassy on French soil, which makes sense, BUT after the Libyan uprising/Gaddafi overthrow.. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...they still relayed a lot on the Libyan forces to control Libyan people. But who controlled what, and where their allegiances really where, and more importantly maybe how well supplied and staffed they where after the war probably should have been taken into account more. My impression, their in county support from Libya was more groups of rag tag local militias, who were completely unprepared to handle mobs...and even sadder the ambassador.. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...died of smoke inhalation. Which means with real crowd control and more organized help, he probably could have been helped.... it was local Libyan‘s who took him to a hospital where his body was later claimed. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Remember when we were talking about security the other day... I immediately thought of that when I saw this headline today: “U.S. Hires Company With K.G.B. Link to Guard Moscow Embassy”. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/11/14/world/europe/embassy-moscow-kgb.html?smid=... 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Making the KGB great again! I believe Putin, he looks me in the eye like an innocent lamb! Those CIA and FBI experts are clearly liars and have no clue. But the KGB is always trustworthy! Worth millions of dollars, having good Russian people, not some fake Americans. (edited) 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice It‘d be funny if it wasn‘t so sad and scary. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I know. Living in a comedy skit is a very bad joke. 7y

I've been dying to see this movie (hello bulky John Krasinski! And for other reasons). My hubs is no longer a fan of war movies so I had to wait till it was on blue ray and to my surprise at Target you can get the movie AND the book! Yays! What a treat!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven't seen the movie yet, but I did think the book was quite good. 8y

Interesting! Perhaps not the best book to listen to. It was very factual and made me sleepy every time I listened to it. Still an enjoyable read, and I can't wait to watch the movie. I think this may be one instance where the movie is better than the book.

Forget all the political carrying on about Benhazi. This is straight up journalistic narrative from the POV of the spec ops contractors. The book is a reminder that we live in a complicated world where good and evil do not have clearly defined lines. Highly recommended!
