Ten-Year Nap
Ten-Year Nap | Meg Wolitzer
The "New York Times" bestselling novel that woke up critics, book clubs, and women everywhere. For a group of four New York friends the past decade has been defined largely by marriage and motherhood, but it wasn't always that way. Growing up, they had been told that their generation would be different. And for a while this was true. They went to good colleges and began high-powered careers. But after marriage and babies, for a variety of reasons, they decided to stay home, temporarily, to raise their children. Now, ten years later, they are still at home, unsure how they came to inhabit lives so different from the ones they expected--until a new series of events begins to change the landscape of their lives yet again, in ways they couldn't have predicted. Written in Meg Wolitzer's inimitable, glittering style, "The Ten-Year Nap" is wickedly observant, knowing, provocative, surprising, and always entertaining, as it explores the lives of its women with candor, wit, and generosity. Meg Wolitzers's newest book, "The Interestings," is now available from Riverhead Books.

If The Feminine Mystique and Lean In came together and had a fictional baby about upper middle class white women in NYC, this would be it! Not at all diverse, but this novel about women‘s choices and where we find ourselves in middle age spoke to me. I really enjoyed the writing and the structure. It won‘t be for every reader, but I think it can make a significant impact on some.

iread2much I love your summary, it would be an interesting baby for sure 2y

Any moms out there who think they should have enough time for everything but can‘t find the time? Do you stay at home and wonder whether your education was worth it? I think I should be able to finish my to-do list, spend time with their family, and carve out an hour for personal pursuits but I CANNOT find the time! The Ten-Year Nap speaks to all these frustrations an more. Full review here: https://pickingbooks.com/blog/the-ten-year

I've already warned the husband. When this long, long, way too long workday ends, I'll be climbing so far in my bed to nap so hard. This time change mess is for the birds. 🙅😩☹️😴

After my hounds demanded their third walk of the day so far (they‘re terrible), I‘m ready to start my third #readathon book. This has some pretty terrible reviews on goodreads, but I‘m still game to give it a shot.

I loved ‘The Ten-Year Nap.‘ Great literature is unique in its ability to transcend the self and reveal universal truths, and the universal truth at the heart of The Ten-Year Nap is that motherhood is a paradox. Full review here: https://pickingbooks.com/blog/the-ten-year-nap

“Whose idea of a perfect job was this? Who ever longed for such a life? But maybe the pay was not horrible and the benefits half decent, and you made of it what you could, and somehow it let you live. She saw that she had no idea at all about the different ways in which people lived.”

It was 3 dollar box day at the library book sale- I managed to snag a few goodies from the picked over remains. Plus the lovely cashier gave me a dollar discount since My "box" was a reusable tote ? #booksale #bookhaul

Entertaining but I don't think it was as good as The Interestings by Wolitzer. Some of the characters annoyed me as I felt they were a bit too sanctimonious. But at the same time, the author nailed some aspects and nuances in human relationships perfectly. Motherhood, self-perception and relationships are the focus. I suspect I am missing the ability to fully connect to the subject matter since I'm not a mother, so I would rate this "worth-a-try."

So I'm bailing on the Wally Lamb audiobook We Are Water as the many narrators are annoying me. Just too much overacting for my taste. Decided to try this one since I liked The Interestings by Wolitzer. Has anyone read it?

Today's #libraryhaul!! Had two holds come in and the book sale started this weekend. I love Meg Wolitzer but haven't yet read The Ten-Year Nap. Not pictured: Notorious RBG and You Will Know Me, my ebook holds that just came up.

En route to San Diego Comic Con...with long lines and long plane rides, I figure I can get some reading in. :p. Perhaps being overly ambitious. But I'm already halfway through A REUNION OF GHOSTS and I only intend to drag the paperback to the convention proper. So much weight...should try an ebook
