Unseen Hand: Poems | Adam Zagajewski
3 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
One of the most gifted poets of our time, Adam Zagajewski is a contemporary classic. Few writers in poetry or prose have attained the lucid intelligence and limpid economy of style that are the trademarks of his work. His wry humor, gentle skepticism, and perpetual sense of history's dark possibilities have earned him a devoted international following. This collection, gracefully translated by Clare Cavanagh, finds the poet returning to the themes that have defined his careermoving meditations on place, language, and history. Unseen Hand is a luminous meeting of art and everyday life.

Pickpick

This small book of poems, which I read in translation from Polish to English, is spare in words and deep in meaning. They take the reader around the world, often to locations where the author recalls someone no longer alive. Zagajewski also writes often of his father, who has some type of progressive dementia. Just when you can't take another gut punch, the poetry spins a scene with clouds and azure sky. This is a treasure I think I'll read again.

saresmoore Good find! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @saresmoore I went searching on Book Outlet when they had their Boxing Day Sale. Needed this for one of the #readharder challenges! 8y
saresmoore Yes! I picked a very obscure one from an almost-micro press. It was not so great, unfortunately, but definitely out of my typical reading zone. 8y

I found this book on BookOutlet.com during their Boxing Day sale. It checks off a challenge for #readharder - translated poems not about love.

I especially appreciate the feelings and images the author evokes from simple phrases. #LitsyPoetry365

vivastory I love Adam Zagajewski. Had the privilege of seeing him give a reading once. 8y

I FINALLY got my Boxing Day shipment from Book Outlet! Seriously, I was like a kid on Christmas morning. The biggest problem was choosing what to read first. So I'm starting with the smallest book, which is #poetry for the #readharder challenge!

Zelma Salvage the Bones has been on my shelf for while. I'm thinking about finally going to it on my vacation this week. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan Mine came last night but I didn't have time for a picture. I'm so excited we got our boxes!!! 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @jpmcwisemorgan Yay for book mail! Can't wait to hear more about yours. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @DGRachel This is the first of hers I have. I love old English stories and this was recommended by someone somewhere pre-Litsy. Wish I could remember who! 8y
Julsmarshall I loved the Bully Pulpit but it is long so you'll need a chunk of time 😄 8y
DebinHawaii Nice haul! 📚📚👍 8y
Cinfhen Yay 😊 enjoy your fabulous new reads 📚💕 8y
ApoptyGina69 I am looking forward to 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Julsmarshall It really is a tome. I have the audio version also, so hopefully that'll help me get through it. When @Riveted_Reader_Melissa was reading last year, she posted a lot of quotes. That's what got me interested! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ApoptyGina69 Me too. Hopefully we'll both enjoy it! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage And I did the same thing... I got the audiobook from the library and had my physical copy I picked up at Thriftbooks.com to read some and post quotes from. I'm hoping to tackle another of her history tome's this year... if I can squeeze it in. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa She is amazing. I look forward to whenever you get to another! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes she is, I'd seen her interviewed many times, but Roosevelt was the first one I picked up and read. And it was so detailed, yet with great relevance today, and great interesting little bits that I hadn't heard about before. Especially regarding Taft, he's one they don't concentrate on as much in school. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's the relevance to today that made me choose to start here. It's been so long since I studied history, I'm pretty sure it'll all seem new. 😜 8y
megt So exciting! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Dragon Oh I'm glad to know you liked it. I may start it sooner than later! 8y
