The Sunne In Splendour
The Sunne In Splendour: A Novel of Richard III | Sharon Kay Penman
31 posts | 28 read | 54 to read
The classic, magnificent bestselling novel about Richard III, now in a special thirtieth anniversary edition with a new preface by the author In this triumphant combination of scholarship and storytelling, Sharon Kay Penman redeems Richard IIIvilified as the bitter, twisted, scheming hunchback who murdered his nephews, the princes in the Towerfrom his maligned place in history. Born into the treacherous courts of fifteenth-century England, in the midst of what history has called The War of the Roses, Richard was raised in the shadow of his charismatic brother, King Edward IV. Loyal to his friends and passionately in love with the one woman who was denied him, Richard emerges as a gifted man far more sinned against than sinning. With revisions throughout and a new author's preface discussing the astonishing discovery of Richard's remains five centuries after his death, Sharon Kay Penman's brilliant classic is more powerful and glorious than ever.

IT IS FINALLY HERE! My “new” copy got lost in the mail and the 3rd party bookseller didn‘t have another. Instead, they sent a “very good” used copy. Well, let‘s just say that I disagree with their version of “very good” and they‘d better be processing a partial refund, but OMG! It is beautiful and my February TBR may have just gotten thrown out the window. #PenmanPosse #RichardIII #LongLiveTheKing

Melissa_J @DGRachel she's my favourite ❤️ 3y
DGRachel @Melissa_J mine, too. I scared a bookseller at Borders when Devil's Brood was released. I'd just gone into browse, he asked if I needed help, I saw the book on the new release shelf (had no idea it was out), squealed like a little girl, and ran to the shelf rather than answer him. 😳🤣 3y

LeahBergen The ONLY one of these that I don't own (or haven't read) is The Great and Terrible King. 😂 I'm thinking that we have pretty similar tastes? 😉 3y
Melissa_J @DGRachel LOL. Do you like Elizabeth Chadwick's novels? She is also a favourite of mine. 3y
Melissa_J @LeahBergen Based in your posts, I definitely think our tastes are very similar. This means I'll be watching out for all of your recommendations 😊 3y
DGRachel She's on my TBR, but I don't think I've read anything by her, yet. 3y
Tracey_19 I loved The Sunne in Splendour and hope to start reading When Christ and His Saints Slept before the end of the month! 3y
Andrew65 @Tracey_19 You're in for a treat Tracey! I love SKP too! 3y
Andrew65 I've read 4 of these books, although I prefer Bring Up The Bodies to Wolf Hall. 3y

#royals
I'm totally obsessed with the English monarchy 1066-1485, but especially Henry II/Eleanor and their offspring and the Wars of the Roses, especially Richard III.
The Sharon Penman book is the ' bees knees' of historical fiction!

LeahBergen Yep. Loved it! 3y
DGRachel I love the cover on your edition! *swoon*😍📚 3y
TrishB @DGRachel 💗 I love all the different covers 😀 3y

krismac I love Sharon Penman books! 3y
deirdrebeecher Love the sunne in splendour, would also recommend Josephine Tey The Daughter of Time for more Rickardian historical fiction. 3y
Oblomov26 As an old Richardian the Sunne in Splendour is an old favorite 3y
TheSloanRanger The Sunne in Splendour was one of two books that made me change my ever pro-Lancastrian mind about Richard III. It's so good! I also loved Here Be Dragons by Penman, fond memories of reading the entire thing during a ten hour layover in Colombo! 3y
Dragon I second @deirdrebeecher 's The Daughter of Time recommendation. It's a short book but full of fascinating info on Richard . 👍🐉 (edited) 3y
TrishB @Dragon @deirdrebeecher Daughter of Time was the book that started my RIII obsession! Much loved 😀 3y
TrishB @picklebacksandpaperbacks They're so good aren't they 💗 3y

I might have gone a teeny, tiny bit overboard during Book Outlet's Boxing Day Sale. I took my TBR list on GR and ranked it by average rating, then looked for deals. Plus two translated poetry books that I'm hoping will work for #readharder2017. 14 books for under 60 bucks! Yowza. Now patience until they arrive ...

SharonGoforth The Sunne in Splendor is so good!! 3y
rubyslippersreads I've wanted to read this book for ages--I've got to work it into one (or more) of the 2017 reading challenges. 3y
christineandbooks Would you mind sharing the titles of the poetry books? That is going to be a hard category for me to figure out... 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @christineandbooks There you go - links in the comments above. I'm hoping I can get through one of them. Any ideas for the POC spiritual journey challenge item? 3y
christineandbooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage I plan to read Life of Pi for that category as I've been meaning to read it anyway. Thanks for the poetry recommendations! 3y
Suzze I bought 11. I have no idea where I'm going to put them. House is at explosion level. 😜 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @christineandbooks Thanks. Not sure what I'm picking, but Life of Pi certainly fits the bill. I'll keep you posted on the poetry once it arrives! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @SharonGoforth I'm excited to read it! @rubyslippersreads I need to see if I can do that also. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suzze I know what you mean. I'll have to find a way to justify them to my DH. 😎 3y
twohectobooks Hope you have a better time with The Sunne in Splendour than I did! (edited) 3y
Suzze @BarbaraTheBibliophage Luckily I only have Tink ?to judge me and she's like "whatevs". ? 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @twohectobooks Uh - oh. Well, no matter what happens I didn't pay full price for it so I'm okay. 😜 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suzze He's really very tolerant as long as it doesn't encroach on his space. He told me over the weekend that mess makes him feel very stressed. He's getting more OCD as we age! 3y
Suzze @BarbaraTheBibliophage My ex was okay with all my books. That is not why we split after 26 years. 😜😜😜 3y
LeahBergen I followed The Sunne in Splendour with the nonfiction 3y
LeahBergen ☝️It was a fascinating combination. 😀 3y
Reviewsbylola That's a great method! 3y
Reviewsbylola Also Nicholas and Alexandra is great. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LeahBergen Wow - that's a great combo and the nonfiction sounds fascinating! Thanks. It's now in my stack. 👏🏻👏🏻 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Reviewsbylola Thanks. I just read Julia Baird's bio of Queen Victoria so I thought the Russian family extension would be interesting. 3y
OrangeMooseReads I did that too. Ended up with 18 books for about the same amount lol 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @OrangeMooseReads Wow - you got such an impressive deal! 👏🏻👏🏻 3y
OrangeMooseReads @BarbaraTheBibliophage I was surprised. A couple of the books were $2 and $3 3y
MamaGina I've got a big box coming too - 16 total❣my probable choice for POC spiritual journey is 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MamaGina That's the perfect book for that prompt. I read it this year and loved it, despite the sadness. Enjoy your Boxing Day box! 3y

While it is the fourth of Penman's novels that I read, her novel about Richard III is actually her first. Richly detailed and well researched, it's a fantastic novel about a fascinating (and much maligned) monarch. #debutnovel #booktober

Moonpa I've read most of her books except this one. How long did you take to read this? I'm imitated by the size. 3y
DGRachel @Moonpa I read it 20 years ago, so I really don't remember. I don't think it's much bigger than some of her Plantagenet novels. If you've read those I don't see any reason to be intimidated by the size. 😊 3y
Dragon Loved this 📚 3y
LeahBergen This is one of my faves by Penman and it reads remarkably fast @Moonpa 3y
Moonpa @DGRachel @LeahBergen Thanks! I've been struggling through Devil's Brood so I've been hesitant to start another big book. 3y
