The diary format is optimal.
What a good topic for kids to know about. The story is told from the perspective of a freed slave girl, so kids get to know what slavery would have been like from her point of view. It being in the format of a diary makes it even more personal.
After I posted my very small collection of these books, the lovely @CrowCAH mailed me her bigger collection (a thank you will be mailed soon 😉), and the lovely @brilliantglow told me about Thriftbooks having a lot of these for very cheap. I ended up getting a welcome code and free shipping because it was over $10 so I spent $30 for 19 books! My collection is definitely getting bigger for my Daughter ❤ Thank you BOTH 😍
Books kids read growing up are impotant in shaping them and diversity in kids lit is sorely lacking. Here are a selection of my Dear America books, a series I loved growing up. History has long been a favorite so most of my books from childhood are of that genre but I also want to note that while it is important to see how far we've come, racism and other isms are, sadly, very much alive. #weneeddiversebooks #seasonsreadings2016 @RealLifeReading

Dear America was my stepping stone between American Girls and Ann Rinaldi -- all together these books instilled a love of history, well, herstory, really. #FunFridayPhoto
