Papa Hemingway
Papa Hemingway: A Personal Memoir | A. E. Hotchner
9 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Between 1948 and 1961, Ernest Hemingway and A. E. Hotchner traveled together from New York to Paris to Spain, fished the waters off Cuba, hunted in Idaho, ran with the bulls in Pamplonaand once Hotchner even masqueraded as a matador and Hemingways manager in an actual bullfight. Everywhere they went, they talked. For fourteen years, Hotchner and Hemingway shared their thoughts and as Hemingway reminisced about his childhood, recalled the Paris literary scene of the twenties, and recounted the real events that lay behind his fiction, Hotchner took it all down. His notes on the many occasions he spent with his friend Papain Venice and Rome, in Key West, on the Riviera, and in Ketchum, Idaho, where Hemingway died by his own hand in 1961provide the material for this utterly profound, and truthfully compassionate best-selling memoir about the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. With a new introduction by the author and with never before published photographs from his personal collection, Papa Hemingway is a mesmerizing portrait.

Hotchner‘s memoir of his friendship with Papa for the last 13 years of Hemingway‘s life leading up to his suicide. A great account and look into one of the most controversial, mysterious, and prolific writers of the twentieth century.

Crazeedi Have you seen the new Ken Burns documentary on Papa Hemmingway? I think it's out, or very soon to be shown! 4y
Rachbb3 @Crazeedi The beginning of April I believe. 😊 4y
LeslieO @Rachbb3 @Crazeedi I love Hemingway stuff! This one is on my shelf but I haven‘t read it yet. Can‘t wait for the Ken Burns doc. Have you read 4y
Rachbb3 @LeslieO I haven‘t but just added it to my TBR 👍🏻 4y

Well my book ban lasted 5 seconds.

MayJasper What sort of ban was it? 7y
Rachbb3 @MayJasper It was a stop buying books until after the new year ban. I guess I just need to know my limitations and embrace them. 😛 7y

I thought this quote from Papa Hemingway (he wrote a forward to this biography) epitomized #adventure. No matter what you think of his writing, Hemingway was an #adventurer. #quotsynov17

DGRachel I ❤️ Papa. I actually drove my sorority sisters to Isla Mirada from Key West, then turned around and went back to Key West by myself to tour his house on Spring Break my senior year of college. 😊 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @DGRachel Great story - and I‘m sure the house was worth it! I was there decades ago, but more recently we went to the Hemingway museum in his birthplace of Oak Park, IL. The museum and his childhood home are about a block away from each other and both were so interesting. 7y
Leftcoastzen Six toed cats in key west! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen It‘s not uncommon to find them further north in Florida also. I lived quite a few hours drive north and had some friends with “Hemingway” cats. 7y
Rachbb3 I love Papa!! 7y

A.E. Hotchner was a good friend of Hemingway from 1948 until Hemingway's sad decline and death in 1961. An interesting account focused on their friendship, conversations, and occasional reminiscing by Hemingway. I got the feeling Hemingway had mellowed in his later years but at the same time increasingly suffered from mental and health issues. #LitsyAtoZ

Younger son thought I knew there was a 2.5 hour delay of school today, but alas, I did not. More reading time for me! I just learned the reason why Papa Hemingway had a beard in his later years: his painful skin condition made it difficult for him to shave. He also felt overwhelmed by his fame, the constant visitors and ringing of his phone distracted him from his writing. (Back cover of Papa Hemingway).

Hobbinol Wow! 8y

The days before computerized special effects. And Spencer Tracy does seem a bit too polished for the role ? (pic from internet; see the watermark "Getty images").

When I asked you guys whether I should read this bio or one of two Hemingway books, the result was basically a three-way tie 😊. It's a rainy day and I'm in the mood for this. It'll be my H for #LitsyAtoZ.

Hobbinol I adore rainy days for reading! 8y

Help me decide which one I should read for Letter H of my #LitsyAtoZ (author track and yes I'm still doing it in ABC order). Should it be Hemingway's account of a trip to Africa with his wife? A novel set in Italy, inspired by a stay there? Or a memoir by Hotchner of his friendship with Hemingway? Thanks! (See below for other tags 👇)

Rachbb3 I'd say Papa Hemingway. I love reading about people's experiences of him. 8y
