Despite the fact we are in a pandemic w/ financial consequences big & small , climate change is the unavoidable problem lurking in the background. This book was like taking a class(in a good way)Diamond shows historical & contemporary examples of how humans adapt, change, conserve,or perish. With a record 35 days this summer over 110 & no end in sight , a new record here in Phoenix ,Az.What is sustainable? What is not? A thought provoking read.

Hooked_on_books I think he‘s marvelous. He‘s such an engaging writer. 4y
Leftcoastzen @Hooked_on_books it‘s nice when someone has such serious information to share is not stodgy or too academic, I was fascinated. 4y
Anna from Gustine I read this book years ago and it is eye-opening. It's so true that history repeats itself and we never seem to learn to do things differently. 4y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
Day 51

#tbrmountain #bookbuyingdiet

marleed This pandemic has helped me commit to my 2020 goal of reading from my own damn shelves. I started the year by tuning pages-out the books id read because I don‘t separate them. Titles out was the majority. I‘ll wait until 2021 to do this again but I‘m confident pages out will win. And that‘s even with donating to LFLs often! 4y

I found some stories more interesting than others. I think nonfiction that I rate higher read more like fiction, this one was good, but it didn‘t read like fiction.

I have to laugh at myself, so I took this out of the library and since then , my library system closed and pushed all patrons due dates till the end of May . So , is it too timely ?It‘s here ,I guess if I get too freaked out I can always put it down.

Great read. I loved the chapters on Easter Island and the Eastern Pacific. Great content front to back. A few chapters were a little dated. Almost as good as “Guns, Germs, and Steel”, but not quite 😊

KateFulfordAuthor I concur, G, G & S was an outstanding work 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage In case you‘re wondering, it‘s @That-Bookish-Hiker who makes the bookmarks. She has an Etsy shop. Aren‘t those perfect for a true crime lover! And she has others too. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ll be interested to hear what you think of both books - whenever you get to them. Your TBR added a few books to my list, like Collapse! 7y

I don‘t have a lot of #thick physical books now that I‘ve been out of school for awhile. This one, however, is one I still have stashed in a box and instead of finding it and carrying it around when I read it late last year/early this year I bought the ebook version because I didn‘t want to carry this book on the bus. It‘s my new practice for #thick books now! #30daysofreadathon

MinDea Ok. What does your user name mean/come from? Every time I see it I think of a quote from a movie but for the life of me I can't remember the movie? Is it from a movie? 7y
nosferatoos @MinDea it's Nosferatu but with "oo" instead of "u" it's a username I've literally used since AIM days. I wanted Nosferatu but it was already taken and I've used this ever since ? 7y
MinDea Ooohhh! Oh my gosh. How did I not see that. I knew it and was even saying lines but the spelling threw me off. 😂😂😂 7y
nosferatoos @MinDea If it makes you feel any better i didnt realize N0S-4A2 by Joe Hill said Nosferatu for the LONGEST time 🤣 (edited) 7y

Mehso-so

It's both a pick and a so-so, honestly. Diamond does a great of developing a framework to consider how societies fall or succeed, and he sticks to it. There's a lot of information to take in. Overall, we can learn from the past or be doomed to repeat it. I'm not as much of an optimist as Diamond seems to be. It was Diamond going on and on and on about Australia's soil that turned me off the most. It drove me crazy!

bookwrm526 There is a lot in that book that's very interesting and a lot that made me raise my eyebrows, like....are you sure hats true? Are you sure you aren't overreaching? 8y

There are key factors that result in a societal collapse, but one thing a society can do to alleviate environmental damage is have good trading relationships with other societies that can more easily produce goods it cannot it. I'm taking this to mean we are all screwed because we're pushing nature to the brink around the world such that not even good trade relationships will help. My words, not Diamond's. I'm a pessimist. Expect the worst.

Suet624 "Let's produce everything in China where they have no environmental restrictions and they can live with the toxic smog and air alerts." 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 We already do that, although there's some reports slowly coming out that China might be cleaning up some. 8y
Suet624 Yup. I was being sarcastic. 8y
See All 12 Comments
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 Unfortunately some people aren't sarcastic about that. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 Have you read this? 8y
Suet624 I have not. Did you see the note on Litsy's description of the book that it's not being sold? I'm m confused. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 Yes, and I'm confused too. I bought last year as an ebook and I'm certain physical copies are available. However, I am reading a revised version so perhaps the database has older versions that are no longer available for purchase as new. I know they are out there used because I picked one up for a member of the book club I'm reading this for. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 It's a bit of a slog at times, and some of the material I'm familiar with from other sources, but it is interesting and I think a timely read for my book club. 8y
Suet624 I'll check it out. I just looked and it's available at my library as an e-book. (edited) 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 It's 600 pages, just to warn you. That's why we read it over the holidays. Well, the smart ones did. I procrastinated. 8y
Suet624 Oh. Ugh. 🤓 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Suet624 I think it's available as an audiobook though. 8y

My friends! Mason is writing his storyline for a Star Wars game and Tara gave up on reading because the music in the coffee shop was weird. I managed to make it a little bit further in my book. I can't read any more of A Darker Shade of Magic until I finish at least half of this one. Sigh...

The problem with reading ebooks is that photos are tough, made harder by dark coffee shops. This is my current #booksaboutnature that needs to be finished soon because Talk Green to Me meets next week. I've paired it with a coconut oolong. Hopefully that helps me read faster. I'm with friends who will hopefully not be a distraction (one is pretending to write, which means playing on FB, and the other may color or read, she can't decided).

Diamond is certainly showing a little sass. I grew up in rural Missouri and am a part owner of a family farm. I have a lot of respect for anyone who works the land (farming, logging, etc.) but I have a hard time understanding those who do not look to the future. I know it's hard to do so when you're trying to survive but it has to be done. The future has a funny way of becoming the present and we should be prepared for it.

Texreader Your points are very well taken and are quite logical. 8y

Reading this for the #TalkGreentoMe bookclub (meets in real life at Recycled Reads in Austin). It's a big book so I need to start now in order to have it done by January 12th. We didn't know how timely this would be when we chose it.

The Talk Green to Me book club will be reading this one over the holidays for our January 12th meeting. We didn't know when we chose it how appropriate it might be. We are happy to have anyone in the Austin area join us for this discussion or for any of our monthly discussions. We typically meet the 4th Thursday of the month but have made adjustments for the holidays. If people are interested maybe we could do a discussion here too?

Two types of choices seem to me to have been crucial in tipping the outcomes [of the various societies' histories] towards success or failure: long-term planning and willingness to reconsider core values. On reflection we can also recognize the crucial role of these same two choices for the outcomes of our individual lives.

Hollie Had to stack this, I teach history so it seems like a book I need to read! 8y
