I find myself considering the relationship between plane crashes and rock 'n' roll. If you're a dead rock star and you weren't a heroin addict, odds are you died in a plane.

This was bad, which really surprised me because I've read five other books by Klosterman--both fiction and nonfiction--and I enjoyed all of them. But with this one, it felt as if Klosterman couldn't decide on what he wanted to write about. Was it about visiting the locations of where rock stars died, or was it about his ex-girlfriends? He would probably tell you that it was about both of those things, but that answer's not good enough.

If you were born later than 1980, some of the things Klosterman writes will make you feel icky and you may declare that he is irredeemably insensitive. This is perfectly understandable and perfectly okay. You should read it anyway. 💚📚❤️📚💙⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Everyone needs more Chuck Klosterman in their lives. I care almost not at all about rock music but I love CK. He is the antidote to everything terrible. I bought this pristine copy of Killing Yourself to Live at the library book sale for two bucks. I‘m a little sorry that Klosterman thus will benefit not all but he is probably completely okay with it, so I will be,too.

My sister read one of his books and said she liked it. I saw this audiobook was available so I said, “why not?” I am not sure if I can make it through, I don‘t particularly like Chuck Klosterman. Apparently from the small amounts of Goodreads reviews I have looked at, this is his worst book. I could be very descriptive of what I think of him, but it basically comes down that he seems like a real prick.

It's pretty easy to guess which parts are the other 15%. I've never gotten into Klosterman's fiction, but it's more palatable when it's mixed with the culture essays and travel logs.

Current read (by way of audio) - who else does Hoopla? I wish I could create a wishlist on their app instead of favoriting things I haven't read yet...

I'm using this one for #LRC18, as the author takes a roadtrip to the sites of the deaths of famous musicians.

I've read a couple of Klosterman's books. Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs was great. But What If We're Wrong was meh. This one is somewhere in between.

Also, the guy is kind of a jerk

Outrageously funny and often insightful. This might have been a five-star read if not for one thing: while Klosterman is undeniably entertaining, he's also... a bit of a douche. He's a pig about women. He's outraged by the suggestion that a rock star might have been gay. He's a culture snob who mocks hipsters without realizing the irony, thinks Thom Yorke is a prophet, and hates the Doors for no apparent reason. Overall feelings: good-ish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really all these books about music have just made me that much more impatient to get the new turntable and the old receivers set up. 🎶🎸🔌 #music
