Moll Flanders (Revised)
Moll Flanders (Revised) | Daniel Defoe, Dover Thrift Editions
As Moll Flanders struggles for survival amid the harsh social realities of seventeenth-century England, there is but one snare she is determined to avoid - the deadly snare of poverty. On the twisting path that leads from her birth in Newgate prison to her final prosperous respectability, love is regarded as worth no more than its weght in gold; and such matters as bigamy, incest, theft, and prostitution occasion but a brief blush before they are reckoned in terms of profit and losss. Yet so pure is her candor, so healthy her animal appetites, so indomitable her resilience through every vicissitude of fortune, that this extraordinary wench emerges as far more than a prototype of the mercantile mind. In "Moll Flanders" Defoe added a fresh dimension to the art of writing. "We seem to see Defoe's characters through the crytal-clear medium of his style with perfect verisimilitude, as real as if we saw them in a mirror that was so flawless that it was invisible, " writes Kennth Rexroth. Virginia Woolf ranked "Moll Flanders" as "among the few English novels which we can call indisputably great."

(1722) Another knocked off my "oughta get around to it someday" list, and I get its lasting appeal: Moll is as charming and unreliable a narrator as any you'll find. There's stuff here about economic conditions for women in the Restoration, and something about colonization, but mostly it's about trickster Moll surviving by her wits (though she's reformed now, honest!) Of its time but still very readable.

swynn Forgot to mention that Moll Flanders is a banned book: under terms of the 1873 Comstock Act, it was once banned from shipment by the US Postal Service. Read #BannedBooks ! 2y

Moll is probably the luckiest women in all of literature. Considering her close calls with the law, death, poverty, motherhood, love, marriage, &prosperity she lived a dozen lifetimes in the span of a few hundred pages.
There wasn‘t much for character development & Moll herself isn‘t overly likable but there‘s something about her that I can‘t help but like. Maybe it‘s her tenacity & charisma but I spent most of the book shaking my head & laughing.

Poor Moll. I feel so sorry for her.

jwashreads I could not get past Robinson Crusoe to read anything else by Defoe. Is Moll Flanders better? 7y
EllanaRose @jwashreads - I'll be honest and say I've not read that. I love character driven narration so I'm enjoying this a lot. There are a few "of its time" moments, but I would recommend giving it a try. You never know. 7y

I got me another #SerialReader badge, woot woot! The only Defoe I‘ve read was the tagged book in college. Perhaps he‘ll need to be on my #LitsyClassics list next year.

To those of you scrolling through your feed right now, I apologize for how many of these posts you're about to see....forgive me.

Look, I haven't had the pleasure of hearing her roar, but if you're looking for indestructible and regenerative, look no further than Moll Flanders--you cannot keep that woman down! If anyone has 9 lives, it's that woman. #monstermadness2017 #godzilla

Natasha.C.Barnes @LibrarianRyan I'm not sure when the 13th ends for you, but I'm headed to bed and will post the last 2 in the morning, when perhaps it will be the evening of the 13th for you! 😊👻 7y

I give this book 3 stars for the fact that is was written in 1683 and it is still so readable. Besides that, I thought it rather boring. At first I liked Moll and admired her attitude towards society. I thought she was quite a woman, surviving in a man's world. However, after a 100 pages it gets a bit boring. Another man, another child, another one's whore, another discussion about money.

#1001books

Sydsavvy The movie is great and Stars the indomitable Robin Wright❣️❣️❣️ 7y

I had a surprisingly hard time with day 13 of #aprilbookshowers #sequelplease! I read a lot of series and every stand-alone I've read recently I'd rather leave well enough alone. But a Moll Flanders sequel? (or a modern reselling or even prequel ala Wide Saragossa Sea??) Sign me up!!

RealBooks4ever That's a great idea! 😄 8y

My current reads list, a bit of everything. Do you like to read more than one book at a time? I love it. I read some in print and others on audio and try to read a variety of styles/genres.

Starting this one for class. 20 pages in and I don't like it... hopefully that changes.

AThousandLives87 Why don't you like it? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've been meaning to read this one for years. 8y
Jas16 I read this one years ago and did not particularly enjoy it. 8y

CoveredInRust @AThousandLives87 It feels like it is both skimming the surface of this girl's life, and dragging on and on in too much detail. I'm hoping that it's only that way until she becomes an adult. 8y
CoveredInRust @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have, too. It ended up being assigned. 😐 8y
CoveredInRust @Jas16 Anything in particular that contributed to the not enjoying? 8y
Jas16 It is one of those books that I can appreciate for what it tries to do and historical importance but the actual reading of it was not enjoyable. I remember it as being over the top in many instances. But I read it like 15 years ago. 8y
CoveredInRust @Jas16 I've finished it. Totally agree with you. 8y
Jas16 Sorry you didn't like it more but yeah not one I will ever reread 8y

For the classic character #octphotochallenge I am showing some love for Moll Flanders!

She tried to make the best of her situation even though it wasn't always legal. Her character is deliciously flawed, and really she is a horrible woman when you consider things, yet her trials and tribulations are a great read and you still route for her.

The photo is from the DVD of the TV series, because look at Daniel Craig! 😂

dekabrista OMG, is that James Bond? 😮 8y
Bookworm54 @dekabrista yes, yes it is. I didn't realise until I rewatched the series and then I couldn't stop staring! Haha 8y
LitHousewife I have got to 1) read the book and 2) watch that series! Daniel Craig with hair! Her cleavage is fantastic, too. 😃 8y
