Crimson Snow
Crimson Snow: A British Library Crime Classic | Martin Edwards
14 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
Crimson Snow brings together a dozen vintage crime stories set in winter. Welcome to a world of Father Christmases behaving oddly, a famous fictional detective in a Yuletide drama, mysterious tracks in the snow, and some very unpleasant carol singers. There s no denying that the supposed season of goodwill is a time of year that lends itself to detective fiction. On a cold night, it s tempting to curl up by the fireside with a good mystery. And more than that, claustrophobic house parties, with people cooped up with long-estranged relatives, can provide plenty of motives for murder. Including forgotten stories by major writers such as Margery Allingham, as well as classic tales by less familiar crime novelists, each story in this selection is introduced by the leading expert on classic crime, Martin Edwards. The resulting volume is an entertaining and atmospheric compendium of wintry delights."

Finished my #SnowedIn challenge. Apparently I like short stories a bit more if Christmas and crime are involved. 3.5 🌟 for the tagged book of British Classic Crime stories. Best of the bunch was A Christmas Carol. The two winter themed books were ok and I just couldn‘t get into Snow Country. Thanks to @Emilymdxn for a great list and @PuddleJumper for hosting. ❤️💚❤️

I'm using this collection of British Christmas-themed mystery stories for #CloakandDaggerChristmas. A few of the stories were mediocre but most were enjoyable. I especially liked a novella-length story by Victor Gunn, a.k.a. Edwy Searles Brooks.

#weekendreads

All wintery/holiday themed. I do better with short stories if I jump in and out rather than reading a collection straight through so I will be in and out of these over the weekend.

@rachelsbrittain

rachelsbrittain How perfectly wintery! 5mo
Aimeesue Christmas Days is one of my favorites. The audiobook is great - Winterson does the narration. ❤️ 5mo
Deblovestoread @Aimeesue I‘ve been switching between the two but the audio is so good. It‘s become a tradition since I found it a couple of years ago. (edited) 5mo

@Mitch Thank you so very much for the lovliest gift. Ha, by now you know how much I love these British crime mysteries!!! And I hung the ornament on my book shelf as it‘s quite true. 🤣 Wishing you and the family a lovely holiday season, my friend. 😘🎄🎅

Mitch You‘re most welcome. I though this snowy one suited the scenes out of your windows at this time of year ♥️ 4mo
AmyG @Mitch…it did remind me of…home. Except we need more snow!!!!! 4mo

Unfortunately I found this pretty hard to get through. The stories weren‘t individually bad but they were so samey, they all felt like sub-Agatha Christie, slightly too long stories. It sounds harsh I know but this was just such a challenge to get through.

readordierachel Sure is a pretty cover though 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 6 #bookstoread #TBRpile

veritysalter I read this one last Christmas, it‘s a great selection of winter crime mysteries. 3y

Oh thank you SO much @TiredLibrarian ! I love this series and I can‘t wait to read this!! I‘m looking out the window at 8 inches of snow (still falling) so it‘s the perfect time for some mysteries. You really made my heart happy with this gift. Much love to you! ❤️❤️❤️❤️. #kindlitsy

TiredLibrarian @Bklover You're welcome! I guess it's even more appropriate than I thought with your snowfall today! 🌫❄☃️😊 5y
Tamra I‘m so jealous of all the snow Littens are getting! Here I am in southeast MN and we‘ve had next to nothing. I like to have a change of seasons! I want to read this one - stacked! (edited) 5y

Holiday reading may begin in three…two…one!

Aimeesue For some reason, I'm extremely fond of Christmas crime. Or any holiday crime stories, I suppose, but it seems like all the greats have done at least one Christmas murder. Poisoned Pen Press has reprinted a bunch of Golden Age mysteries, and many of them are Xmas/winter related. They have at least 2 Xmas anthologies, this and 5y
batsy And I adore those covers! 5y
Aimeesue @batsy Aren't they lovely? Makes me want to collect them al- NO! I must not! I have too many books already! I shall just admire them from afar. 5y

batsy I just ordered one from the series and it arrived today... 😂❤️ #resistanceisfutile 5y
Aimeesue @batsy I hope it's good! The first story in this one had some pretty misogynistic language on it, but I think that was a ham-fisted attempt to throw suspicion at one of the characters. The rest of the stories did not have this transparent, problematic string- pulling going on, thankfully! 5y
batsy Alas, this is a problem that crops up frequently in golden era or period detective fiction and mysteries :( 5y
Aimeesue @batsy True, but it‘s usually a general casting of women in general being weaker, stupider, less capable. This was a pretty targeted “She was a traitorous cheater, as all women are” sort of thing. Oy! 5y
batsy Oof, that is hard to take 😖 Glad that the rest of the stories are not as bad. 5y

This isn't a bad collection, but a couple of stories I found ran on too long (particularly the Ironside one). My favourite was Josephine Bell's ("The Carol Singers"), with second place going to the Margery Allingham story ("The Man with the Sack").
