The Bride of Frankenstein
The Bride of Frankenstein: Pandora's Bride | Elizabeth Hand
5 posts | 2 read
Attempting to create life through dreadful experiments, Henry Frankenstein and Dr. Pretorius instead created unspeakable horror: two misshapen monsters, a brutish male and his female mate, stitched together from the bodies of cadavers. Crafted to be the monster's bride - an undead Eve to an equally accursed Adam - the female creature was destroyed mere minutes after taking its first breath - or was it? This new novel by the critically acclaimed Elizabeth Hand reinterprets the memorable characters from Universal Picture's classic 1935 film for a new generation of horror fans. Detailing the bride of Frankenstein's secret history, from the shadows of forgotten laboratories to the streets of Weimar Germany, Hand creates a richly atmospheric tale of horror, mystery, and tragedy as chilling as the creature itself. Elizabeth Hand's novels and short story collections include Mortal Love, Black Light, Bibliomancy and the cult classic Waking the Moon. A longtime contributor to the Washington Post Book World and the Village Voice Literary Supplement, she lives in Maine.

Next up is The Bride of Frankenstein 1935 starring Boris Karloff, Colin Clive and Elsa Lancaster.

Fun fact, on the left is a picture of the Bride of Frankenstein, on the right is a picture of Katy Nanna from Mary Poppins 1964. Look familiar? That's because they're the same person!!!

Chrys I see you liked my last post but no little 🧟‍♀️? 5y
Chrys And what would you say is the best version of Frankenstein? 5y
BeansPage @Chrys that really depends on what you think "the best" means. The 1930s universal ones are not very close to the book but they are iconic and very well done. The 1994 one was closer to the book but not so iconic.... I guess it really depends on personal preference. 5y
BeansPage @Chrys my favorite portrayal of the monster will always be Boris Karloff. And as for Frankenstein himself although they mixed up the names of Victor and Henry for some reason I always will love Colin Clive although there have been others that have done very good jobs as the mad scientist/doctor Frankenstein. 5y
DrexEdit Love that film fact! 😊 💜 5y
LauraJ This is THE BEST Frankenstein movie! 5y
Palimpsest Funny story I watched The Bride of Frankenstein last week and the next day Bell, Book, and Candle and I said to my husband that we just saw her in a Bride of Frankenstein the day before, but set years apart too, but not planned. I first saw her in a Christmas movie though, The Bishop‘s Wife. 5y

For a book with just over 200 pages the author sure stuck in a lot of stuff : Frankenstein , his bride , a freak show of failed science experiments , a fembot , a gang of what are essentially Lost Boys and a serial killer of children . I love the way the author writes but I wish She had focused a little more on The Bride rather than adding all the strange sidebars .

Jenbug68 From what I've read about this book online a lot of these little plot points were references to some movies etc of the era the book took place ( which clearly went over my head ) . Maybe I would've liked this book more if I got those references . Still , I wanted more about HER . 8y
