Goodnight from London
Goodnight from London: A Novel | Jennifer Robson
29 posts | 26 read | 52 to read
From USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Robsonauthor of Moonlight Over Paris and Somewhere in Francecomes a lush historical novel that tells the fascinating story of Ruby Sutton, an ambitious American journalist who moves to London in 1940 to report on the Second World War, and to start a new life an ocean away from her past. In the summer of 1940, ambitious young American journalist Ruby Sutton gets her big break: the chance to report on the European war as a staff writer for Picture Weekly newsmagazine in London. She jumps at the chance, for it's an opportunity not only to prove herself, but also to start fresh in a city and country that know nothing of her humble origins. But life in besieged Britain tests Ruby in ways she never imagined. Although most of Ruby's new colleagues welcome her, a few resent her presence, not only as an American but also as a woman. She is just beginning to find her feet, to feel at home in a country that is so familiar yet so foreign, when the bombs begin to fall. As the nightly horror of the Blitz stretches unbroken into weeks and months, Ruby must set aside her determination to remain an objective observer. When she loses everything but her life, and must depend upon the kindness of strangers, she learns for the first time the depth and measure of true friendshipand what it is to love a man who is burdened by secrets that arent his to share. Goodnight from London, inspired in part by the wartime experiences of the authors own grandmother, is a captivating, heartfelt, and historically immersive story that readers are sure to embrace.

This was on sale for kindle today and since I don‘t have nearly enough to read on my kindle (😳😁) I got it and read it today. Romancy historical fun. Liked the story about a strong woman although I did feel that the romance was a little hollow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I will read anything Jennifer Robson writes. This is a sweet story that makes you feel warm inside. I give it 4 ⭐️. It wasn‘t as deep as I like my historical fiction to go, but it was still really enjoyable.

Hubby has a meeting on campus this afternoon, so I walked over with him, because it‘s a beautiful day. Now I‘m waiting for him, in the Student Union Building. I usually love being on campus during the summer semester. When it‘s all calm. But it‘s bustling today. Don‘t worry, I have a book on my phone and a sugar free iced tea.

Finished my first book in the #24in48 Readathon. This was a lovely story of an American Journalist in wartime London during the Blitz and beyond. So many good features to this story, including her meeting Mrs Roosevelt. The main character also had a good back story. Felt quite a refreshing story. Definitely recommend this one, which worked well as an audiobook, and keen to read more by this author. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

Started listening to Goodnight From London on my drive to Scotland and really enjoying it so far. Very well narrated! #24in48

EadieB @Andrew65 You didn‘t waste too much time leaving for your holiday! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB We never do, finished work at around 5.30, driving off on holiday at 6.15. 😂 Just arrived at our first destination just after midnight. Maximise the time! Have some work still to do next week but that‘s the beauty of laptops and the internet. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Nice that you can complete your work on your laptop while on holiday! 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB Definitely! Then take a few weeks off to recharge batteries and think about past year before completing some more work whilst still away in weeks 5 and 6 before returning. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Difficult and time consuming job! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Definitely and all consuming job, but can be so rewarding too. This year has been a very difficult one but results overall strong. May have been the last day but had my appraisal this morning! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Well at least they are appreciating your hard work and you are getting good results! That‘s rewarding! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB What more rewarding job than shaping young children‘s lives, but a lot of stresses and strains in the job these days. Seems to get tougher every year. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 So true! That is most important! Well, enjoy your reading and hope you get the relaxation you most deserve! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks got a big stack of books lined up! 😂 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I can imagine that you packed them first! Hope you have plenty of air in your tires! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB How did you know! Wonder how much petrol gets wasted transporting the books! Just posted the schedule for the Group Read of 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 The books are worth the petrol. Have a goodnight and I‘ll check out the schedule for Seagull! 6y

I loved this story.

Ruby Sutton, a fledgling journalist, leaves New York for London in the summer of 1940 to report on the war in Europe. Soon after, the air raids begin and Ruby‘s meager possessions and simple routine are destroyed. For once she finds others who are willing to help and she builds a new life in this beleaguered country - one far richer than the life she left behind.

Well researched, yet easy to read.

Laura317 This sounds like my sort of book. 6y

This was a lighthearted and sweet, if bland, story about a young female reporter in London during WWII.
However, it lacked that indefinable something, and elements of the story stretched the bounds of credibility a bit for me.
I finished it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book set in the 1940's WWII London blitz. The author brought to life the story of the British resolve to go on with their everyday lives while living through those dark unpredictable days.

This was a truly beautiful story. Not just about love but how those during the war endured. Beautifully written and with such detail it was like seeing a movie on every page. Wonderful characters whom you couldn‘t help but fall in love with. Throughly enjoying this book and will be sure to read more by the author.

Sooo I‘m supposed to be cleaning the house...we are hosting our first Thanksgiving meal at our house on Sunday. The hubs is at work getting ready for Black Friday sales, my oldest is at her dads house & my youngest is watching the Minion movie. Perfect time to clean right?! But I‘m snuggled up with 2 warm corn bags (totally better than heating pads), a soft blanket, relaxing music & a good book 🤓 #readnow #cleanlater #bookwormproblems

SandyW I'm in a similar boat, only it's not my first rodeo. And it's going to 95 her today in SoCal, and I am sooo not motivated. BTW love the Febreze postcard. 6y
SassyBookworm @SandyW ohhh if it was that warm here I‘d love it! It‘s just 43 here & I always freeze! 6y
SandyW @Chrysta23 Sure it Sounds good in theory, but try baking when it's that hot. I told the hubby were turning down the ac today! 6y
SassyBookworm @SandyW very true! That would make it miserable 😩! Lucky for me no baking today! Just cleaning 😝 6y

Inspired by the author's grandmother's story, this is set in England during WWII. American woman journalist, the Blitz, a troubled soldier ... a good pick for an afternoon on the deck. I'm off now for the evening. More great books tomorrow

DebinHawaii I want to read this one after a brief WW2 break. I feel like I have read a bunch of them lately. Nite. 💜 7y
