The Supremes Sing the Happy Heartache Blues
The Supremes Sing the Happy Heartache Blues: A Novel | Edward Kelsey Moore
15 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
From the author of the bestselling The Supremes at Earls All-You-Can-Eat, an exuberant and poignant new novel of passions, family, and forgiveness When a late life love affair blooms between Mr. Forrest Payne, the owner of the Pink Slipper Gentlemans Club, and Miss Beatrice Jordan, famous for stationing herself at the edge of the clubs parking lot and yelling warnings of eternal damnation at the departing patrons, their wedding summons a legend to town. Mr. El Walker, the great guitar bluesman, comes home to give a command performance in Plainview, Indiana, a place hed swornand for good reasonhed never set foot in again. But El is not the only Plainview native with a hurdle to overcome. A wildly philandering husband struggles at last to prove his faithfulness to the wife hes always loved. A young transwoman lights out for show biz and Chicago to escape her fathers wrath and live an authentic life. And among those in this tightly knit community who show up every Sunday after church for lunch at Earls All-You-Can-Eat, are the lifelong friends, known locally as The Supremes Clarice, facing down her longing for, chance at and fear of a great career; Barbara Jean, grappling at last with the loss of a mother whose life humiliated both of them, and Odette, reaching toward her husband through an anger of his that she does not understand. Ed Moores lively cast of characters, each of whom have surmounted serious trouble and come into love, need not learn how to survive but how, fully, to live. And they do, every one of them, serenaded by the bittersweet and unforgettable blues song El Walker plays, born of his own great loss and love.

Between so-so and pan. Three life-long friends (The Supremes) share their stories of loves and lives and struggles. Lots of characters to keep track of and I lost focus.

I needed something lighthearted after reading some heavy books previously. This is the sequel to The Supremes at Earl‘s All You Can Eat. I enjoyed it.

The Supremes Sing the Happy Heartache Blues brings together a lively cast of characters in a heartwarming, life-affirming tale of small-town community and female friendship.
'A joy to read! Besides being laugh out loud hilarious, Edward Kelsey Moore has a profound understanding of human nature' Fannie Flagg, author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

This was a good story. I enjoyed revisiting Plainville, IN and the people there; felt like they were my distant cousins. They are every day people and special people too. Glad to get more story on BarbaraJean, Richmond and on James. I enjoyed their journey and antics around town and to Chicago.
If you get a chance, go visit them too.

The Nats-Mets game last night was crazy! It included several lead changes and this funky #homerun!

I finished this book last night as well. It‘s a sequel set about five years after the events of the first book, but it can also stand alone. For my part, it was great to “check in” with the characters and also meet some new faces in this lovely story about #friendship and family, small towns and acceptance (or lack of it).

Moore's works is absolutely delightful -- small towns, long buried family secrets, and friendship. If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe or Steel Magnolias, then you will love this charming (but not sappy) read. It's the second with these characters -- you don't need to read the 1st, but you would be missing out on another great read if you skipped it.

Finished this one one the plane to the beautiful green mountain state. Loved his first book and loved this second one just as much. It was like a happy reunion seeing all the characters I met in the first one again.

YAY!!!!! I'm so excited. ??. This post was the highlight of my day. Edward Kelsey Moore's next book will be out in June. You all have time to read his first book if you haven't yet. (For the record, I was not the person who posted "to long" ?)

Susanita I loved the first one! 8y
drokka I wasn't aware of a sequel. Thanks for this 🙂 8y
Godmotherx5 @drokka Previously, he said it was going to be from Odette's husband's point of view. I don't know if that's still the perspective. 8y
minkyb I will have to check this out! Literally! 8y
