Human Croquet
Human Croquet | Kate Atkinson
Once it had been the great forest of Lythe. And here, in the beginning, lived the Fairfaxes, grandly, at Fairfax Manor. But over the centuries the forest had been destroyed, replaced by Streets of Trees. The Fairfaxes have dwindled too; now they live in 'Arden' at the end of Hawthorne Close and are hardly a family at all. But Isobel Fairfax, who drops into pockets of time and out again, knows about the past. She is sixteen and waiting for the return of her mother - the thin, dangerous Eliza with her scent of nicotine, Arpge and sex, whose disappearance is part of the mystery that still remains at the heart of the forest.

It started slowly ( probably deliberately) and rather conventionally about a dysfunctional family unit - but it soon became engrossing, complex and slightly strange - all of which I liked ! I did get a little lost at times with the plot - switching between time and consciousness but I coped with it and really enjoyed the book .

I pulled out a bunch of random titles from my towering TBR to reacquaint myself. I love reshuffling my stacks from time to time! Are there any titles here I should move to the top of my list?

Ruthiella I need to read that Atkinson title myself! I‘ve owned it for over a decade. 😳 1y
sarahbarnes I loved Conversations with Friends and it‘s a quick read! 1y
cariashley @Ruthiella I think that‘s definitely the one I‘ve had the longest 😅 1y

This throws some twists and turns like Atkinson‘s later work, but is a bit loose in its construction; something like a written version of a Jane Austin-esque Masterpiece Theater sciFi adaptation… thoroughly enjoyed it!

Crazy story! I loved it.
Took a while to get used to her way of writing and narration but totally worth it. 🤗🤗🤗

#AyUpAugust #Human I haven't read this one yet, but it's on my bookshelf- time travel and a 300-year-old family curse sound intriguing!
@Cinfhen @squirrelbrain

This is what came to mind with #Human. Own a copy, which had for a number of years, but yet I read it. Has anyone read it?
#AyUpAugust

CaroPi I have not but is also in my TBR 5y
Jilly6183 I haven‘t read this one but I‘ve read her other two and enjoyed them. Adding this to my stack! 5y

squirrelbrain Good choice! Love that cover too... 💚 5y
Andrew65 @squirrelbrain A simple but effective cover. 5y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook This book was so weird but so good. One scene weirdly mixed in my brain with my hypnobirthing relaxations I was listening to at the time 😂 This book stayed with me for a long time, I actually still think about it sometimes. 5y
Andrew65 @MommyWantsToReadHerBook Some of her books are, like the tagged books and Life After Life, And A God in Ruins but really enjoyed them. A great review and a great story. 👍😊 Good how some books remind us of events in our life. 5y

I‘m excited by my very small #bookhaul from my long weekend in England! Given how many bookstores I wandered into, it‘s a small miracle I had the restraint not to buy more 😊

One of my #autobuyauthors is Kate Atkinson. I will buy anything and everything that she writes. Some of them that I own are ebooks that I bought when they were on sale so they aren't pictured here. #marchintoreading

saresmoore I must read her! Life After Life is steadily moving up my TBR. 8y
Ncostell @saresmoore I loved Life After Life. Hope you enjoy it when you get to it 😀 8y
MrsMalaprop Me too ❤. Have only read Beautiful Ruins and Life After Life. I was excited to see there so many more of hers for me to enjoy, including all those here in your stack 👏😊. 8y

MrsMalaprop Would you recommend any of these in particular for me to try next? 8y
Ncostell @MrsMalaprop I would recommend Case Histories which is the first in her four book Jackson Brodie series which is a blend of a hard boiled detective novel with literary fiction. Those are great reads too, very different from Life After Life. 8y
mcipher I've read some of her old stuff (Jackson Brody - thanks @Ncostell !) but I have to read Life After Life. It's been on my list for a long time. (edited) 8y
Ncostell @mcipher Hope you enjoy Life After Life, I thought it was fabulous! 8y

This is my pick for #Recommendsday: Atkinson plays wonderful games with place and time. This book is odd, but in a good way. It is full of mystery, suspense, confusing twists, magical language and eerie fairy-tale-like moments. You definitely should read this!

shawnmooney I loved her Life After Life - went on my short list of all-time favorite novels. I hadn't heard of this one - thanks! 8y
KarenUK I hadn't heard of it either... Thanks! - adding to the TBR :) 8y
MrBook You've talked me into it. 8y
Alena Oh how I love Kate Atkinson. I also appreciate that you chose one of her lesser known books. 8y
