My Fairy Godmother Is a Drag Queen
My Fairy Godmother Is a Drag Queen | David Clawson

Chris Bellows is just trying to get through high school and survive being the only stepchild in the social-climbing Fontaine family, whose recently diminished fortune hasnt dimmed their desire to mingle with Upper East Side society. Chris sometimes feels more like a maid than part of the family. But when Chriss stepsister Kimberly begins dating golden boy J. J. Kennerly, heir to a political dynasty, everything changes. Because Chris and J. J. fall in love . . . with each other. With the help of a new friend, Coco Chanel Jones, Chris learns to be comfortable in his own skin, let himself fall in love and be loved, and discovers that maybe he was wrong about his step-family all along. All it takes is one fairy godmother dressed as Diana Ross to change the course of his life. My Fairy Godmother is a Drag Queen is a Cinderella retelling for the modern reader. The novel expertly balances issues like sexuality, family and financial troubles, and self-discovery with more lighthearted moments like how one rogue shoe can launch a secret, whirlwind romance and a chance meeting with a drag queen can spark magic and light in a once dark reality.

I was really looking forward to this book. I just didn‘t mesh with the writing style. It was very obvious that the author was not used to writing in this format because it just felt very juvenile and hard to push through, especially for a YA. There were also some iffy things around the white dude writing for a Black character that are definitely not normal things in that situation. Also the age of the drag queens was unaddressed beyond “you ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ can‘t date him he‘s a minor” which by the way, is not a great leeway to more flirting between an adult of an unknown age and a 17 year old. 1y

Cinderella is Chris, living in New York with his stepmother, stepsister and stepbrother. Prince Charming duly returns the shoe after the ball about a third of the way through the book and then life starts to get really complicated. Who is JJ Kennerly really interested in anyway? Chris or his definitely not ugly stepsister?

I didn't actually LOL but it was pretty funny. A good light read.

It‘s really weird to see yourself on the cover of a tabloid.

I‘m kind of mixed on this one. I‘m not sure how I found out about it but whatever comment or review I read made me interested and I feel like this book didn‘t live up to that. There were some great moments but sometimes there was some weird awkwardness that I‘m having a hard time explaining.

I love a good book that I just can't put down! This variation of the Cinderella story was so much fun to read, and had you cheering for Chris and his drag queen fairy godmother, Coco Chanel Jones, the entire time!

wanderinglynn I need a drag queen fairy godmother! 5y

I stumbled upon a description and sample of this book in one of my many emails about books yesterday, and I'm so glad I bought it! I don't usually buy ebooks because I prefer physical books, but I wanted to keep reading! I'm enjoying it so much so far!!

Are you having a happy holiday season? Because SHE definitely is! We‘re not home reading tonight, but out at a #dragrevue #comedyshow. It‘s very funny!

HOTPock3tt The show in my area sells out months in advance!! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @HOTPock3tt I would definitely go to another show. This was a one-woman revue and we thought there would be more. But she was fantastic! 6y

So I totally forgot I signed up for this reading challenge so here is my first post...

This is definitely an unconventional romance... a coming of age story about two boys falling in love and the struggles they face within themselves and within society.

Not your average, every day Cinderella retelling... Chris, a young man, struggling with his sexuality falls in love with his step-sisters boyfriend... it is a tender coming of age story that reinforces that everyone is entitled to love!

This is Pauline (with me), my reading partner for #rso. We spend two hours together every month selecting books to send to schools, not to mention all the texts, emails and google doc sharing we do do in between meet ups. She's a colleague I admire and have learned much from. Today we helped at an Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton 91 storey treehouse book event. Over 1500 attended, mostly kids.

Missusb We read a lot. Also that book is my new purchase. Hope it's good. (edited) 7y

Chris is not your typical teen. Besides being gay, and firmly in the closet, he's lived with his step family since his father's death. Now with strained finances it falls to him, the only one that knows how to do anything, to take care of things. Cooking, cleaning... he's used to it. While the family drives him nuts, they're all he has and they have redeeming qualities.
One night, one fairy godmother, one shoe, changes the course of life.

This book sounds like it will be hilarious. And I love the cover. Not too girly or princess (since it's about a guy) but still fun. I hope it is a glittery cover, and not just a glittery print. #coverlove

I really should know better than to start a book an hour before bedtime. I have only myself to blame for almost falling asleep during a meeting today. But this was SO GOOD! This was the gay YA Cinderella retelling I didn't know I needed in my life.
