Postcards from the End of America
Postcards from the End of America | Linh Dinh
2 posts
Roaming the country by bus and train, on a budget and without any institutional support, Linh Dinh set out to document, in words and pictures, what life is like for people. From Los Angeles, Cheyenne, Portland, and New Orleans, to Jackson and Wolf Point--Linh walked miles and miles through unfamiliar neighborhoods, talking to whoever would talk to him: the homeless living in tent cities, the peddlers, the protestors, the public preachers, the prostitutes. With the uncompromising eye of a Walker Evans or a Dorothea Lange, and the indomitable, forthright prose of a modern-day Nelson Algren or James Agee, Dinh documents the appalling and the absurd with warmth and honesty, giving voice to America's often forgotten citizens and championing the awesome strength it takes to survive for those on the bottom. Growing out of a photo and political writing blog Linh has maintained since 2009, Postcards from the End of America is an unflinching diary of what Linh sees as the accelerating collapse of America. Tracking the economic, political, and social unraveling--from the casinos to the abandoned factories and over all the sidewalks in between--with a poet's incisive tongue, Linh shows us the uncanny power of the people in the face of societal devastation.

I am a cis heterosexual white male. Aside from being (lower) middle class, I probably won't be too personally affected by the new fascist regime that has been elected. But I have, like, two or three cis heterosexual white male friends. My friends are queer or childless cat/dog people or women or Hispanic. I have nieces, not nephews. There are all at risk, and that is straight from the tangerine mouth. I also have conscience and a soul. This sucks.

lil1inblue My husband and I are childless by choice. But I have 10 niblings, with #11 due to arrive in March. 4 are 50% indigenous. 1 is gender fluid and queer. 6 are female. This is not the world I want for them. I'm going to channel my anger and organize like there is no tomorrow. 1mo

Julsmarshall Yep! We‘ve got to keep fighting for what is right. 1mo
Amiable As I mentioned to @cbee, I saw a post that said, “It's now painfully obvious that racism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia and hate are not deal-breakers for millions of Americans if a gallon of milk costs too much.“ The harsh reality of this literally breaks my heart. 1mo
Skygoddess1 As much as I hoped and prayed that this wouldn‘t be the outcome, I went into Election Day sensing that this would be the outcome. I guess as a Black woman I knew to be disappointed in our society at large. The one thing I found most surprising was that he won the popular vote too. 1mo
CBee @Skygoddess1 I, too, had hope that it wouldn‘t go this way, despite knowing the reality that it probably would. I thought I was prepared, but I‘m not ☹️ 1mo
CBee @lil1inblue ♥️♥️♥️ 1mo
Leftcoastzen I‘m with @Amiable !😡 1mo
JamieArc I‘m not seeing as many white dudes express these opinions, so I really appreciate seeing it here 💙 1mo
kspenmoll @Amiable No words to express broken hearts —thank you for sharing that right on post. ❤️ 1mo
marleed I was almost prepared for him to win the electoral college. I was ill-prepared for the results of the popular vote. I‘m saddened and incredibly disappointed the majority of Americans voted to make life so much harder for so many that need help and compassion. I‘m also angry the faith I grew up in became so political I can no longer support it or find comfort in it. I fear freedom from religion has become reality. 1mo
JudeCC Thank you!!🙏It means a lot!🌈My partner is a transgender man. Grateful he‘s not being impacted by this because he lives in the UK where he is respected & they provide all the medical & psychological help they may need. Disgusted about America rn. I have many friends here in LA who are transgenders/transitioning. Minors & adults. This affects their families too. Playing with someone else‘s emotional and physical health is cruelty & abuse of power. 1mo
JudeCC @lil1inblue 🫂 I feel you! ❤️🙏🌈 1mo
JudeCC @Amiable I need to respectfully copy and share that quote/message. 🙏❤️🌈 1mo

MemoirsForMe Well said! So sad, shocked and heartbroken. 😔💔 1mo
Amiable @WJCintron Absolutely. It‘s a truth that needs to be faced head on. People who voted for this should be forced to admit that they traded the soul of our country for cheaper groceries. (edited) 1mo
JudeCC @Amiable 💔💯😞 1mo
staci.reads It really does suck. I am still struggling for the right words as I try to comfort my young adult children who are feeling disillusioned and defeated. I am, too, but I don't want them to feel defeated this young. Kamala's words yesterday helped, but ugh. 😞 1mo
TieDyeDude @amiable I believe that is just an excuse to justify their vote that they know deep down is, at best, flawed. If conservatives voted Kamala (or not at all for pres) and voted republican for everything else, they'd still have won both houses, hampering most of what Kamala could accomplish, and we would be done with Trump. Our system and our media is just so rigid; there is no creativity... 1mo
TieDyeDude @SkyGoddess1 @marleed At least in Michigan, third party candidates were a huge factor. I don't even know how RFK was still an option if there is absolutely no path to him winning. I agree, though. I don't know if I'm just in more of a bubble than I've been in the past, but I absolutely did not expect such a definitive result. I just don't know how so many people can get past the black-hearted rhetoric of Trump. (edited) 1mo
Skygoddess1 I watched an interesting video today in which the child of Chinese immigrants who was born here in the States, was speaking with a cis-white male and he asked him why he would vote for Trump when the white male deals in facts and Trump isn‘t fact based at all. The man‘s response was that he voted for him because he‘ll slow down the trajectory of whites becoming the minority in the country they built. I think many agree with that statement 1mo
TieDyeDude @JamieArc I am honestly at a loss. I know some people try to explain away his racism and fear mongering as hyperbole or exaggerated rhetoric, but he has proven time and again that they are not idle threats. I just don't get how so many people can get past his actual words. 1mo
TieDyeDude @WJCintron @lil1inblue Best wishes to your friends and family. The fight continues, and there will be many to fight for a fair future. 1mo
TieDyeDude @staci.reads It is tough for young people and first time voters. My first presidential vote was Bush v Kerry. I was disappointed because I did not agree with Bush's policies. But Bush did not publicly announce his hatred of half of America or vow to go after those who didn't vote for him. It is insanity that Trump was even an option. 1mo
TieDyeDude @skygoddess1 Well, built this country on the backs of minority slave labor, but good luck finding that in history books that have systematically re-white washed. *sigh* I wish there was more push back in interactions like this. I understand a journalists desire to be unbiased or report just the facts, but with all the partisan media and bubbles/echo chambers, these lies just get constant reinforcement. Cover your ears and run back to NewsMax 1mo
Skygoddess1 @TieDyeDude Yeah, the interviewer said the same thing about how this country was built on the backs of Blacks, Indigenous and Chinese immigrants like his parents who built the railroad. The racist had no response 1mo
TieDyeDude @Skygoddess1 Do you have the link? I'd like to watch it. 1mo
PaperbackPirate Yes, I‘ve been telling friends we‘re privileged to be white and straight in these times. 💙 1mo
