Wait Till You See Me Dance
Wait Till You See Me Dance: Stories | Deb Olin Unferth
8 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Deb Olin Unferth is one of the most daring and entertaining writers in America today. Sam Lipsyte For more than ten years, Deb Olin Unferth has been publishing startlingly askew, wickedly comic, cutting-edge fiction in magazines such as Granta, Harpers Magazine, McSweeneys, NOON, and The Paris Review. Her stories are revered by some of the best American writers of our day, but until now there has been no stand-alone collection of her short fiction. Wait Till You See Me Dance consists of several extraordinary longer stories as well as a selection of intoxicating very short stories. In the chilling The First Full Thought of Her Life, a shooter gets in position while a young girl climbs a sand dune. In Voltaire Night, students compete to tell a story about the worst thing that ever happened to them. In Stay Where You Are, two oblivious travelers in Central America are kidnapped by a gunman they assume to be an insurgentbut the gunman has his own problems. An Unferth story lures you in with a voice that seems amiable and lighthearted, but it swerves in sudden and surprising ways that reveal, in terrifying clarity, the rage, despair, and profound mournfulness that have taken up residence at the heart of the American dream. These stories often take place in an exaggerated or heightened reality, a quality that is reminiscent of the work of Donald Barthelme, Lorrie Moore, and George Saunders, but in Unferths unforgettable collection she carves out territory that is entirely her own.

It‘s probably alarming how much I agree with this sentiment. Nevertheless...

More than halfway done (and made some headway on my kindle books and some graphic novels)... I've still got a couple hours left in me, but I'm taking a brief break for some snacks and to reassess my stack for #24in48 - and Elliot is invested in my break as well (cause this is really her apt - I just happen to live here too 🤣) #catsoflitsy

By the by - that tea is called Scarlett O'Peara 😁

mjdowens LOL. Worth finding and getting for the name alone 7y
rustoryhuf I love the vanilla Oreos! Good choice on the snacks and more power to you for 24 in 48. 7y
Jinjer Cats LOVE vanilla! Elliott knows it's in one of those packages. 7y
Eyelit @mjdowens my thoughts exactly. I lucked out in that I really like it 😄 7y
Eyelit @rustoryhuf @Jinjer they are actually lemon Oreos - but both of you have convinced me that I must seek out vanilla ones (I've never seen them in my grocery store) 😁 (edited) 7y

Is there a support group for weak-willed readers? If so, sign me up.
Despite vowing to read only my own books this month, I somehow found myself picking these up from the library today. Feeling slightly guilty. Just slightly. 😆#libraryhaul

TheBookHippie But they look so pretty !!! (Two of those are on my TBR) 😂💗📚 7y
MatchlessMarie Just tell yourself you are helping keep them in circulation like I do 😂 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I do the same thing! I keep saying I'm going to only read the books I own, then I go to the library and find something enticing. I just love libraries! 7y

Fernoppy I don't think books and discipline are meant to go together. 7y
JazzFeathers Well, since every true reader is a weack-willed reader when it comes to new books, would that really be a mere 'group'? 😆 7y
Suet624 I do exactly the same thing. 😁 7y
melissanorr For the last several weeks I have said I wouldn't check out any more library books until I've finished some of the ones already on my account. So I keep bringing home ARCs instead 😚 7y

An interesting short story collection. Like most collections, some stories were better then others. I was a little put off by how short a lot of these short stories were (under a page or two). But it was very thought provoking at times.
