This seems like a doable read for a chapter book. I think that children 3rd and up could indepentdently read this, especially if there is a project about someone. I also think that this would be a good, short class read aloud during Black History Month or when studying that history.

Autobiography of Ruby Bridges and her story of the Little Rock Nine and the Civil Rights Movement. This is a first hand account of the events in that time along with pictures and more personal captions explaining them.

This is the true story of a courageous little girl. She was the only African-American child in her Elementary School in Louisiana ,1960. I really enjoyed listening to Ruby Bridges' memories of her first-grade year. It was very informative, and I highly recommend the audiobook. Thanks for the recommendation @ImperfectCJ

ImperfectCJ I'm glad you liked it! I found it quite moving, both the audiobook and the interview with Ruby Bridges at the end. 3y

Super quick memoir from the woman who, at age 6, desegregated her neighborhood elementary school in New Orleans. I love how Bridges shows us this story through her eyes as a child and how she's grown to contextualize her experience over time. Invaluable addition to my ongoing education about race and racism in the United States.

The hatred and evil in the white separatists still astonish me. I hope I never become immune to it so I can still fight for equity and equality. This little girl had to mature and become an adult. She lost her childhood and I am grateful she did.

This B was such a powerful children's book. I will definitely be implementing this into my future classroom. This would be great for younger ages to start on a literature circle or to have as a read-aloud allowing you the teacher to ask structured questions. The UDL is 3.1, I would do more than read this book, I would also go further and do an author study. The ESOL strategy I would reference is 9 to incorporate not taking. #UCFLAE3414F19

KristenScala I love biography books and I think they‘re very important for students to utilize and learn from. I think it‘s a great idea to do an authors study on Ruby Bridges! 5y
DrSpalding You don‘t see why this book is powerful. Remember that your post should be concise yet share knowledge of the book. 5y

This Jane Addams Children‘s Book Award winning B is about a pivotal point in history where Ruby Bridges begins attending an all-white school. She faces racism head on with nasty comments being thrown at her by mobs outside of school. This doesn‘t stop her from getting her education even if she is the only one there. A brave and inspirational read that should be in every classroom. LC could be used as it is a longer book and provokes discussion!

DMoux https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/through-my-eye... This link provides a lesson plan with discussion questions that could be great for LC. UDL 3.3 can be used through discussion questions guiding information processing. ESOL 31 can be used to modify questions by using shorter and less complex sentences. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Kcompton2912 I remember learning about Ruby in my elementary class and I loved her story and perseverance. I would have loved to have this book during our lesson with the discussion questions. We did watch a fabulous movie on her and that would be great to add to this book! 5y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a high-quality resource and your idea of using this as a literature circle option is excellent! You can learn so much from historical figures that have overcome challenges in life. Social studies and great books work well together.❤️📚🌍 5y

Ruby Bridges does a wonderful job telling her own story in picture book format. She uses her own memories, photographs, newspaper articles, and the recollections of others to tell the story of a complicated time in American history and a complicated time in her own history. Highly recommended for anyone, adult and child, looking to learn more about Bridges.

#UCFLAE3414F17 Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges is a detailed biography picture book about Ruby Bridges‘s experiences during the integration of segregated schools and how they effected her into becoming the wonderful woman she grew to become. It would be best used as a LC or IR within a classroom.

EveAstrouck ESOL: 28 provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries. UDL: 3.1 activate or supply background knowledge. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/seeing-integratio... t-816.html?tab=4 7y
DrSpalding Yes! Literature circles or independent reading! I am so pleased you cited number 28 about providing biographies. This is a best practice strategy for not only EL learners but all students. Excellent resource. 7y
