Fables Vol. 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers
Fables Vol. 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers | Bill Willingham
23 posts | 54 read | 2 to read
WINNER OF FOURTEEN EISNER AWARDS. Bill Willingham's runaway hit series FABLES continues its success in this fourth volume, which collects issues #19-21 and #23-27 (issue #22 will appear in a future collection) and features the rise of a new threat to Fabletown. When Little Red Riding Hood suddenly walks through the gate between this world and the lost Fable Homelands, she's welcomed as a miraculous survivor by nearly everyone-everyone except her old nemesis, Bigby Wolf, who smells spying and subversion more than survival. But will he be able to prove his case before disaster strikes? And how will it all affect Prince Charming's upstart campaign to become the new mayor of Fabletown?

Really well done. Battle begins but felt transitional to what will be happening next. Hopefully some characters will come back from the dead and we‘ll find out more about the enemy!

I read Fables vol. 1-3 on my library's Overdrive. They didn't have any more, so I was tickled to see this shelf of Fables at McKay's.

KathyWheeler I loved these. 6y
Carolyn11215 I think Hoopla has all of them...if you have access to it? 6y
Betty @Carolyn11215 I don't know anything about Hoopla. Is it the same as Overdrive/Libby where you need a library card? 6y
Carolyn11215 @Betty, yup, they are hooked up to many libraries. Is use both Hoopla and Overdrive. 6y

As I said in a previous post, the prologue to this volume had me in tears. The rest of this volume does not disappoint. There are funny moments and sad moments but very few happy ones for these Fables.

Look at Fables being quietly political all of the sudden. 😂

Decided to go back to volume 4 of Fables. I've loved the 3 previous ones a LOT so let's see how volume 4 holds up. It's such a fun premise although the story does get dark in ways I wasn't used to fairy tales being 😂 I'll try and finish it still today since I can usually get through one of these in an afternoon!

"Thirteen thousand dollars is the price you quoted, correct?"

"We can afford that."

"Is that per bean or for all four?"

Back onto Fables. The covers are so beautiful 😍 I think that being a visual person makes comics and graphic novels so appealing to me. There are those series with an amazing story but simple line drawing black and white like Persepolis or Fun Home. Or a comic like the last Sandman which was a feast of words and beauty. Whom else here is drawn to comics as a literary form, as well as an art form? Just curious ❤️

Foxyfictionista I am! Have you read the Mouse Guard books? The art is stunning and the stories are epic medieval tales. Actually, now that I've mentioned them I should go back and read them. 7y
andreadmw @Foxyfictionista love your Litsy name btw ❤️Mouse Guard has been on my list for a long time. Have not read it yet. I was a big fan of Maus, it was actually my 1st comic I ever read. It was introduced to it through WW2 history. I had no idea comics were anything but men in tights, fighting 🙃my point is, when I heard of Mouse Guard I was drawn to it thinking of how much I loved Maus and have wanted to try it for a long time. 7y
Foxyfictionista @andreadmw Definitely try it out. And thanks! I feel foxy when I read. 😜 7y

A great storyline and some beautiful artwork in this volume of Fables. I love how the characters are deepening - I feel like the new takes on each character are meshing well with the standard storytale tropes. Looking forward to continuing the series!

Library trip today to pick up this one... and this back cover art caught my eye. I dunno, Prince Charming might be a better choice than what'll be available in November...

Possibly my favorite volume yet. I liked how it ties in to the overall story about the Adversary. Violent at times, yet also pretty funny, and ends in a place that makes me eager to read the next volume.
