The Mill on the Floss | George Eliot
post image
Pickpick

A richly detailed and emotionally complex novel that explores themes of family, societal expectations, personal freedom, and the tension between individual desires and communal obligations. Eliot presents flawed characters with nuanced motivations, making their conflicts deeply human. ⬇️

dabbe However, so much time was spent developing the characters, town, and story, that I felt the ending to be almost too abrupt and melodramatic. And a major #wtf ending! 😱 While imperfect, it remains a moving and thought-provoking work. 2d
julieclair Excellent review. 2d

Ugh! I am going to say this one is a blah! It was super long, for that ending THAT ending!? #WTF
Anyway, thanks to the #HashtagBridgage and @BarkingMadRead fpr hosting :) I wouldn't have been able to finish this one alone.

My baby Lazlo

Bookwormjillk That ending was one of the worst I‘ve ever read 3d

TheAromaofBooks Thank you for guiding us through this one!! This is my second George Eliot book and I am here to say that it will also be my last 😂 What even was the point of this. 3d
dabbe The ending infuriated me. All the pages ... on and on ... such descriptions ... blah blah blah ... then BAM! Dead in one chapter. The end. #wtf? 😳 And what kind of marriage will Lucy and Stephen have. I'd always think that his true love was Maggie. What kind of marriage can come from that? At least MIDDLEMARCH had a happy ending! 3d
mcctrish @dabbe I am so mad!!! Maggie is smarter than her father, smarter than her brother, Philip is her intellectual match but he‘s a cripple so that‘s a no, Stephen is a lightweight and her cousin‘s choice so that‘s a no, let‘s kill her off cuz that‘s the fitting thing to do #knowyourplacegirls ENRAGED I am 3d
KAO Stunned! It actually crossed my mind that the author was tired of this story or didn‘t know how to end it—so, ta daa! A dangerous flood occurs to shut it all down with fatal consequences! The End. Argh! Ah well, thanks for leading us through this one, @BarkingMadRead! 3d
Ruthiella Thank you @BarkingMadRead for once again leading us through the breach! I likely would have not read this otherwise. I‘m glad to have it under my belt, even though it was a frustrating read at times. 3d
eeclayton Joining the #wtf club. It was interesting to realize that out of the 3 times we saw Maggie in a boat, the only time she was safe was when she was threatened by the flood, floating with no male companion in the vessel. But the I still don't understand why the siblings had to be killed off like this.
Thanks @barkingmadread for leading us through another difficult read that I would probably have given up on without our lovely group 💕

Clare-Dragonfly Bleh! All the flooding and drowning was definitely foreshadowed effectively… but bleh! Thanks for leading us @TheAromaofBooks 😘 3d
AllDebooks Wow, what a cop out of an ending. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for keeping us sane and amused through yet another chunker 😊 3d
Leftcoastzen Thank you @BarkingMadRead all that for that ending ?😡🤬 3d
BarkingMadRead @Leftcoastzen @AllDebooks @dabbe that ending was garbage 🙄 3d
julieclair @AllDebooks I agree 💯. So disappointing after aaaalllllll those pages. @BarkingMadRead You are the best leader ever! 2d
kwmg40 I feel the same way as everyone else about that ending. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for hosting! I'm sorry I didn't contribute much to the discussion but I did enjoy following along with the #hashtagbrigade. 10h

mcctrish It was a beautiful letter ❤️❤️❤️ I‘m so infuriated! All these people pushing and pulling Maggie around and she‘s just trying to do her best 5d
AllDebooks This is grinding my gears now. Maggie should tell them all to feck off. She should ask Tom for a small allowance and get gone to a new life with found family and better friends. 5d

dabbe It's hard to believe, but if only Maggie had gone through with the elopement with Stephen, she would have caused less damage, and Philip and Lucy would have eventually moved on with their lives. Now that Maggie is determined to stay in town, she is making it impossible for Stephen to have a possible reconciliation, either with herself or with Lucy. Moreover, her presence in town will keep the wound open in Philip's heart. 5d
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t love Philip telling her he would have committed suicide if he didn‘t love her so much. Keep that to yourself, my man. I‘m glad you had something to hold onto but don‘t make Maggie feel guilty. 5d
Leftcoastzen Maggie can‘t get a break. It was a lovely letter, everyone seems stuck cuz Maggie is stuck .😞 5d

#ThreeListThursday #TLT @dabbe
Well, this one oughta be fun! I'm such a sucker for book lists. 🤣
1. Survey link: https://www.listchallenges.com/1001-books-you-must-read-before-you-die-1700s
2. Share your score if you'd like.
3. Share your 3 favorites from the list or 3 that you might be interested in reading, or 3 you thought were horrible or a combo of whatever you'd like.
4. Tag a few!
Tagging Littens who played last week. 🤩

Librarybelle I got 16, but there are so many I‘m in the middle of but did not count because I did not finish them. Some I‘ve not heard of before and others are on my to read list. 😂 3w
BarkingMadRead 27 for me (I counted two that I‘m currently reading) 3w
lil1inblue Uh oh. This era does not bode well for me... 😂 3w

BooksandCoffee4Me Oh, 22 only! Jane Austen saved me on this one. So many I‘d not heard of but look interesting! Remembered how much I loved Woman in White. Thanks for the tag @dabbe 💛 3w
CSeydel Just 11. Not bad for a STEM major, though, right? … right?? 3w
CSeydel Probably another 11 on my TBR. But most of them I hadn‘t heard of 😔 3w
Amor4Libros I got 1…Moby Dick! 🤣🤣 3w
dabbe @Librarybelle 🎯🩵🎯 Most from the 1700s, I'm like 😳! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Thank goodness for the #hashtagbrigade! We were able to count quite a few! (and I included MILL ON THE FLOSS since we will be finished soon). Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @lil1inblue 🎯🩵🎯! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me #ditto! I adored WOMAN IN WHITE! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w

dabbe @CSeydel 🎯🩵🎯! 3w
dabbe @Amor4Libros And I only read “Call me Ishmael“ and called it a day! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Got 22, which is not too bad for a Lit major focusing on contemporary texts! 3w
dabbe @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I think you'll kick some serious ass as we move forward in years! 🤩 Thanks for playing and sharing! 🩵📚🩵 3w
willaful Only 20 for me! Would be a bit higher if I had participated in *all* the #HashtagBrigade reads. ;-) Nothing I especially want to read but certainly might if the brigade does them. :-) 3w
peaKnit I know face slaps are not allowed but @dabbe…I got 4 😂 thank gosh for Jane Austen. 3w
shortsarahrose I got 12, which is honestly better than I expected (thanks mostly to actually liking 19th century American lit - Melville, Hawthorne, Poe). Sorrows of Young Werther should count twice cause I read it in German 😆 (surprised that with three Goethe texts on the list, Faust wasn‘t one of them! I guess maybe because it‘s technically a play?) 3w
Bklover 18- thanks to #hashtagbrigade and Jane Austen. There are quite a few I hadn‘t even heard of! 3w
TheSpineView Thanks for the tag! 🥰💛🏷 3w
Bookwormjillk Lucky 13. Grateful for#PemberLittens and #HashtagBrigade 🤣 3w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead I definitely counted Mill on the Floss. We‘re almost done! 3w
Read4life Thanks for the tag!! 💙📚💙 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures Oh! It is too bad they couldn't find a few more 😂 thanks for the tag! 3w
Deblovestoread Thanks for the tag! I‘m going to get my book out before I do the survey as my memory was much better back then. 3w
Daisey @tpixie I went through and have read 39 (including currently reading Mill on the Floss). I‘ll have to watch for these the next few weeks. 3w
dabbe @willaful The #hashtagbrigade saved my sorry ass! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @peaKnit I think the only one I read from the 1700s was GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. The others I was like 😳. 🤣 We'll get better as the list moves forward a few years!
Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵
3w
dabbe @shortsarahrose Yep, I think plays don't count, though they should. And you should count it twice! I read COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO in French, and I counted it twice. I needed all the help I could get! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @Bklover IKR? 1700s was like 😳!!! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @TheSpineView YW! 😍 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk IKR? Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w

dabbe @AnnCrystal YW! 😍 3w
Lesliereadsalot Thanks for the tag but I can barely remember what I had for lunch let alone books from my far past! 🩷 3w
AnnCrystal Whispering again...👀...Zero!

I did watch many as movies, but it's been years.

1 - Carmilla. Long Time TBR book (I'm horrible, still need to read Dracula too).

Movies

2- North and South I saw one version of this many years ago and fell in love with the story

3- Orson Welles In Jane Eyre 💝💝💝.

📚💝.

rwmg 39 including 2 I DNF-ed (Clarissa and Tristam Shandy).
3w
Eggs 6 🙀🙄!!! 3w
julesG I might have read 13 books from that list. 3w
julesG @shortsarahrose I had similar thoughts about Goethe and was wondering why a few others were missing. Them being plays might be the reason. 3w
Amiable I don‘t even care about my score —the fact that I could check off “Clarissa” caused me to shout “YES!!” and pump my fist in celebration. 🎉 ☝🏼😀 3w
tpixie 12. It said the average was 18! 3w
TheLudicReader Hahahahaha. 8. 3w
dabbe @AnnCrystal I adored OW as Rochester! That's my favorite version, too. Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @melissajayne Those 1700s! #oy 😳 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @rwmg You kicked my sorry butt! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @Eggs Thank goodness we're past the 1700s! I was like 😳 when I saw those books! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @julesG I was all about the “might“ on this list. 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @julesG I think you're right. 🎯 3w
dabbe @Amiable Is that like the longest book in the English language? I don't think I could even attempt--nor would I want to! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @tpixie Together we average 18.5, so we're good! 😍 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
dabbe @TheLudicReader Reading with the #hashtagbrigade and loving Austen are the only two things that gave me a few more books. 1700s? #wtf 😳 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵📚🩵 3w
Amiable @dabbe It is the longest! I couldn‘t have gotten through it without the Litsy #Clarissa crew. 3w
dabbe @Amiable I barely made it through WAR AND PEACE, so I don't know if I could even fathom reading this one! Was the writing good? 3w
tpixie @dabbe I like your math! 3w
AnnCrystal @dabbe 🤩👍🏼😍🎬💝. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Only 8 from these. I should check a few of these out. I don't remember much about A Modest Proposal other than a one line plot description, but I know I thought it was clever. Wild that we read it in school. I enjoy Edgar Allan Poe, so those two are probably the favorites. I've seen Emma on film and read a graphic novel. I'm counting that in my tally because I've decided that Austen novels just aren't for me. 3w
dabbe This was me looking through the ones from the 1700s: 😳😂 Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵💙🩵 3w
ImperfectCJ I'm late taking this quiz, but I got 21. I want to read Candide and The Sorrows of Young Werther. I've read everything by Austen so if there'd been a few more of those, I would have gotten a higher score. :-) 2w
dabbe @ImperfectCJ 🎯 re: Austen. I have WERTHER on my TBR, too! Thanks for playing and sharing. 💜💚💜 2w
dabbe @RaeLovesToRead For pretty much all of the 1700 books, I was like 😳. Thanks for playing and sharing. 💜💚💜 2w
